Seen this thread on a few other team boards and thought it might be a bit more of a positive thread to have than some of the others around at the moment.

Some points -

Port and Hawthorn - Have they actually improved from last year or are we still seeing the same problems? Will they make the 8?

St. Kilda - How will they go without big Nick.

Freo and Sydney - Can they keep up this form for a whole season?

Bulldogs - Has Barry Hall actually made them a better side?

Geelong - Any signs of decline? How long can they keep playing at this level?

Which players have really impressed you so far this season?

I'll start us off on a point that I think a lot of people will disagree with - I hope Collingwood win the 2010 premiership. The celebrations in Melbourne would be incredible. Can you imagine a Saints - Collingwood GF with Luke Ball getting the Norm Smith? :D

Hawthorn yes, Port no. Add Franklin, Sewell and Burgoyne to Hawthorn and they are a finals team. Not top four though.

Port haven't improved. Brogan, C Cornes and Tredrea will all struggle with injury at some stage and the wheels will fall off. Bottom eight I reckon.

St. Kilda - How will they go without big Nick.
I reckon they'll struggle against the better teams to be honest. Still enough quality across the park to win plenty of games and beat most opposition but I think they will struggle from now on against the Bulldogs, Collingwood, Geelong, Brisbane and Sydney.

Freo and Sydney - Can they keep up this form for a whole season?
Yeah I reckon both will make the eight.

Bulldogs - Has Barry Hall actually made them a better side?
Definitely. The missing ingredient if he can stay away from the tribunal.

Geelong - Any signs of decline? How long can they keep playing at this level?
Geez, if they can keep Ablett they can keep winning. In the next 2-3 years they'll still have all their players except for Milburn and Ottens you'd think, so plenty of chances in the short term. You'd expect a pretty lean 6-8 years after that but after 3-4 flags who'd care?

Please God no!
Geelong premiers again I reckon.

Geelong will also lose Scarlett pretty soon which will be a massive loss.

I think Freo and Sydney will definitely make the 8, but on current form they are almost top 4 sides.

I'd like to see Sydney do well this year. They have always been my second team and it would be a bit of a hit to the whole you have to bottom out theory.

I miss Marty Mattner.

Port and Hawthorn - Have they actually improved from last year or are we still seeing the same problems? Will they make the 8?
Hawthorn, don't think so. Port, no. Hawthorn really seem to struggle without Franklin, and like Adelaide, they need a full strength team on the park to execute their zone. Can see then maybe sneaking into the 8. And Port actually haven't improved their list much at all over the pre season. Hitchcock looks a player, but guys such as Trengove, Butcher, Moore are still extremely raw. And with Tredrea and Cornes not getting any younger, they will struggle if one of two injuries hit, as the depth just isn't there yet.

St. Kilda - How will they go without big Nick.
With Kozzie back next week, and Goddard showing today he is more than capable up foward, they will be fine. Also Milne has stepped up his game yet again this year. Will still easily make the top 4.

Freo and Sydney - Can they keep up this form for a whole season?
I don't think they will keep their current form up for the whole year, but certainly will both make the 8.

Bulldogs - Has Barry Hall actually made them a better side?
Most definetley. Turned the game against Hawthorn, and makes the Bulldogs a heck of a lot more feared.

Geelong - Any signs of decline? How long can they keep playing at this level?
No signs as yet. With their strong core group of players still in their primes, and guys like Duncan and Podsiadly stepping straight in, will be up there for a few more years yet.

Which players have really impressed you so far this season?
Barlow, Podsiadly, Brown, Brennan and Jordie Mckensie (a tackling machine!).

Bulldogs for the flag still, but Brisbane will certainly give it a shake, along with Geelong and the Saints.:thumbsu:

I haven't seen the Freo/Saints game yet but will at some point. You would think Goddard and Kosi are no where near Riewoldt as a key forward but top teams have always been able to cover up injuries to key players well.

Brennan is an interesting one. Very uniqe player, always enjoyed watching him but never really thought he was as good as he could be, but that seems to be changing which I think is a good thing for the game.

Naitanui's game the other night was unbelievable. Will be incredible, I don't care if he can kick or not.

You don't have to stick to the topics I put in the OP, feel free to put in anything that catches your eye from the weekends games.

The Collingwood Essendon ANZAC day match was a real disappointment this year, there was no point in the game where Essendon even looked like they might get up.

There haven't really been any good matches this round but I think we learnt a bit about St. Kilda without Riewoldt.

not really
We've learnt that St Kilda can't win in the rain
they havn't been able to do it in no point over the last year

They mustn't of played much in the rain last year then because they didn't lose many games. Took it right up to Geelong in the rain on Grand Final day.

I'm pretty confident to say if Riewoldt played against Port the Saints would have won.

and I was right
I came onto the Crows board and saw someone had commented on this thread
I then remembered I had commented on it not very long ago
Before seeing what I said I thought "I said something stupid didn't I?"
See what you had quoted, and I saw I said something stupid  sorry

Its going to be interesting to see how that saints go whilt nick is out of the team. I would imagine they would end up 50/50 which is below where they would have expected to been at the start of the season.

The interesting thing I can see is if Freo can continue the run they have. If they can manage to beat WCE I really believe they are a top 4 challanger.

Also remember how good the Saints' injury run was last year. At the moment they are missing Riewoldt, Gram & Ray from their best 22, which isn't quite Adelaidesque, but still is far worse than last year. One of Lyon's greatest achievements has been getting a lot more out of those second string players. It'll be interesting to see if he can do it again this year.

not really
We've learnt that St Kilda can't win in the rain

They beat us by about 80 points in the rain last year at AAMI, when it rained for pretty much the whole game.

Will take an incredible effort for the Saints to win the flag from here.

For mine Geelong are still favourites but woudn't be surprised to see a real upset like a Freo or Sydney flag. The comp looks to have really opened up at this point.

Its ok to admit that we deserved to win. Even if Riewoldt played we still would have won.

So what are you guys thoughts on Carlton?

Beat Geelong and now St Kilda get smashed by Collingwood and beaten by Essendon?

is the competition just that tight this year or are injuries bringing down the level of the competition?
Competition is very tight at the top.. but it really shows just how badly St Kilda miss St Nick.

but is he worth that many points?

I am hoping this is a sign that we are still a chance for he finals given 12 wins is likely to get you in there. It seems being down 1 or 2% this season is really costing clubs.
It's more about how their entire forward line is structured around him - and how it collapses almost entirely when he's not there. Kosi is no substitute, actually Kosi is barely an AFL footballer at all.

Carlton have had to deal with the same thing without Fevola so it's not really an excuse for them. I think it was just an off day for the Saints and Carlton very much had an on day. I don't think the Blues are top 4 contenders.

Carlton have had 6 months to plan around Fevola's absence, including the drafting & trading periods. St Kilda have had 3 weeks and have been stuck with the same list with which they started the season.

I don't think Carlton are genuine top 4 contenders either - though they have surprised me this year with how well they are coping in Fevola's absence.

Kozi was never the same after that string of collisions he was involved in.

Imagine if that had happened on the football field.

Also you have to feel for Hamish Hartlett copping another injury. Takes so much commitment and effort to even get drafted and it must be frustrating for him to keep getting injured as he's trying to establish himself in the AFL.
