Not a fan of this line of reasoning.

Professional Australian rules footballers have a reasonable expectation of being touched, tackled and otherwise subject to physical acts that are not acceptable in most other workplaces. There is also a reasonable expectation of more uncommon assaults such as being collected on the head with a swinging arm, being stomped on, copping an errant boot to your body etc. This includes your shirtfronts, and these uncommon assaults are penalised with inhouse consequences (free kicks, 50m penalties, suspensions etc).

However, I don't think any workplace - AFL or otherwise - makes allowances for homophobic/sexist/racist slurs.
Oh the inocence of the naive. This the AFL thats inbed with the gambling industry and promos ever big game with the grossest violent past footage available?

You would also be sacked and charged by police for hitting someone or making death threats at most workplaces.

Afl is a different world where violence and threats of violence are better than hurting someone's feelings .

Rankin would have been better off just shirt fronting him
I would have enjoyed it more.

People, people. Can we not focus on the Freo hatewatch coming up on Sunday afternoon? Could be one of the all time hilarious ends to their season if they miss finals. Dogs at Marvel on the rampage too, ha so delicious
It's going to be one of the all time hate watches if they miss finals on 15 wins.
Even when they're good they're shit. :D

Lobb seems to do better intercepting up the ground. Isolate him 1v1 closer to goal and he seems suspect

We already have the Freo brains trust strategising on how to nullify Lobb’s influence. It’s Monday and genuine panic stations in downtown Cockburn already!

Not relevant to the argument that expectations of physical contact in the AFL and other workplaces are vastly different, but there's no justifiable reason that verbal abuse should also be treated differently.

A bit unfomfortable with where the AFL draws the line here, and the difference between Jack Graham being given the mercy of not having to play in the worst side in history for a month vs the next bloke having to miss what may potentially be the only finals series or premiership he may get to play in in his career for the same crime or less.

Let's assume that Graham said the really bad f word and he chose to go for that rather than a more publicly acceptable sledge. Being reported that Rankine was making comments about an oppo players nail polish. Is "love the nails Felicia" on the same level as "I'm gunna smash you f word'' and who gets to decide what qualifies and how offensive one is to the other?

The fans are never told what is said, maybe it would be fair Rankine gets 2 weeks because what he said was at the low low end or maybe there are things you could say that get you wiped out for a season. There are certain words I don't personally say in general and I don't think should be said on the field either, but how far does the AFL take it? I'm sure there are those who would say that any kind of sledging is crossing a line once you really think about it. I was never a sledger so that wouldn't have impacted me at all, but at a certain point all banter could be said to be offensive. Do we want players getting rubbed out for suggesting to Willi Rioli that he's enjoyed a turtle or two too many over the off season? Or if Mark Nicolski is was still playing should a player be rubbed out for asking him out to dinner because he's almost as hot as Carmen Diaz with that hair? To some those are racist and homophobic comments to others its harmless banter. Probably what Rankine said did cross a line but it gets increasingly hard to know for sure without a transcript and given we don't trust the AFL to competently manage any other part of the game why do we trust them to manage this?

If something is deemed to have crossed a line, the punishment should be a large fine and a public apology and getting sent to sensitivity training. That is plenty enough of a disincentive. It's a social crime and the AFL is trying to build a better society. Plenty of comments on here about how dumb footballers are as if you expect the largely low iq thug segment of society to speak and act like the same was as the cadre of level 7 public servant's posting on these boards. Educate and shame, and financially wound, but let them football. At least for a first offence. Having a situation where the AFL needs to escalate the length of the ban every time this happens just makes a farce, you could literally cave someones face in with a haymaker and get the same or less weeks. No idea what Rankin is paid per season but fines of this nature should be tied to your salary. Lance Collard, 10k. Isaac Rankine 100k. Money goes to a charity not the AFL. If it's a racist slur it goes to charity a, homophobic charity b, body shaming charity c etc etc. until everyone can just get along and put out positive vibes only.

It is relevant to a view that the AFL is in any way more that and entaertainment circus, or has any sense of integrity or consistency.

Staggering blokes are still getting done for this when you could just call the opposition a campaigner and be fine, how ingrained is this within these blokes. Incredibly grim stuff.

Unrelated but I wonder if anyone's ever figured out why AFL is just about the only sport in the world to never have had an only gay player?
I was thinking that myself. Just call him an effing campaigner if you're frustrated..

Mind you, it won't be long until the AFL stamps out 'campaigner' on the grounds of sexism, surely.

Already though the likes of Dwayne are summarising if he is just buying time for two years and then will be taking off…

That is what you call a win-win. Nas gets the bag, St Kilda avoid another kick in the nuts and keep the gun.

Minimum suspension is 3 weeks based on precedence, but they've been getting longer
