Minimum suspension is 3 weeks based on precedence, but they've been getting longer

Except they haven't always been getting longer. The precedent should be irrelevant because it is inconsistent. They started at 3 then > longer > shorter > longer > shorter... but granted with an upward trajectory from 3. If you want to cite precedent but its a different outcome each time, and there actually isn't a set penalty then who's to say 2 weeks isn't also consistent?

There must be an implied severity factor or else all bans should be the same. Self reporting gets a discount but a discount on what? What was the difference between Lance Collards offending that was worth 6 weeks and Raic Andrews that happened afterward and was worth 5 weeks? Collard offended on multiple occasions in one game, how come it wasn't 5 weeks for each offence, is there a group discount? Can you then go and king hit someone twice in a game get 5 weeks for the first but a 4 week discount on the second hit?

With Jack Graham it seems he used a blatant slur so knew he should self report, in other cases the slur might of been in less direct language and the player might not of known they had used a slur, so it would be up to the other player involved to come forward and say "actually I was offended." Perhaps Rankine said something he didn't intend as homophobic or did not understand to be homophobic and subsequently can apologise and be educated so as not to do it in future. That to me is worth less of a ban than someone who used a blatant slur that they were in no doubt was homophobic and then self reporting to get a lesser sentence.

Again, have no idea what was said except that it was reportedly about an oppo players nail polish, but its very unclear how to apply precedent when each offence so far has been different from the last and each penalty so far has been different from the last. Like all things AFL its a shit show and they'll make up whatever penalty suits them. Could be 8 weeks could be 2 weeks, either can [and will] be justified on the basis of it being "consistent" with the rules and past penalties.

That’s big coin to turn down

Glad for the Saints. 10 weeks ago I was keen to see them deregistered but gotta admit I do like to see Ross the Boss operate and them having the second biggest name in the game behind Harley Reid is interesting. They have both won me over. "AFL neppo baby" and the come from behind last quarter are some of the top highlights of 2025. And yes, I would rather be "languishing in mid table irrelevance" with the equal second best record in the past month of footy than going into the pre-season off a 1 win season. Pick 1 and 2 is nice but the Saints winning 4 straight and signing the best player in the game sets them up pretty well for next season as well. Will be interesting to see what they do in the off season.

They've managed to beat 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th on the ladder, by a combined total of 21 points. Not sure you can take much if anything away from those games other than a pat on the back.

Winnings winning. Just saying 4 on the trot is probably a nice vibe to end the season on regardless of who you're beating.

The vibe would be nicer to be sure. I think we sign Reid everyone goes home on a happy note given their age, and the fact they've all (bar Grego) had a run.

This is how it works Adelaide, the closer you get to a Grand final the more hectic it will get, you can just about guarantee if Adelaide are playing a Vic team in the GF the infamous camp will get a run on the back page of the Herald with "new" revelations.
The true story of collective minds might finally come out.

Some of you are so ****ing thrilled that the AFL botched the death threat situation so badly, because without it you’d need to find some other false equivalence to bang on about.

AFL mishandled the death threat thing. Really really badly. That doesn’t invalidate them saying “actually you can’t say slurs on the football field” and delivering a reasonably consistent approach to stamping it out over the last two years.

They should have handled the Rioli thing way better. But if you don’t want to get banned for a homophobic slur, don’t say a homophobic slur.

If the AFL arbitrarily said they’d ban anyone who wore blue boots, and then three guys in six weeks decided to wear blue boots - whether you agree with the penalty or not, at a certain point the conversation should simply become how the **** are these guys so stupid? Deserve what they get.

How big a loss will Rankine be for the Crows' chances? What is their depth like? Is there somebody who's waiting outside the best 22 ready to fill the void, a la the Gaff, Naitanui and Shepherd replacements in 2018?

He’s a big loss. Type of player that can turn a game with a 10 minute burst

Josh Rachele is close to a return I think and the closest like for like comparison

tought or impossible to match up and he is always in the game - a big miss. He can have 5-10 minutes that seal a game
