sorry to harp from pages back....

think i just thought of a way to fix the ugly games and congestion? it took 3 tabs of acid and 56 hours of non sleep but i think i have it....

did they not introduce the centre sqaure years ago to stop players from camping at every bounce? then the centre circle to stop it again a few years back?

cant we just introduce a 5 meter/10 meter (whatver the figure is) zone around each stoppage bounce where only the 2 ruckman can be present like it is for the centre bounce?

it may stop the constant rolling mauls because it allows oplayers freer movement and the ball a chance to escape. I know there is the policing of it, but with most rules it becomes habit.

I am against the use of Zones, except for the centre bounce. Reduce rotations which will fatigue players, and backward kicks in the defensive half are not paid as marks. This latter move may make teams flood less in the backline and create more forward pressure.

pay 'holding the man' frees anywhere around the ground... and watch the game speed up. Not just isolated to forwards..

Pretty hard to deliver the ball when you have a guy giving you a bear hug before the ball is bounced...

Pay too many frees and your slow the game down. By definition a free kick is a stoppage.

Didn't watch the game, just going by stats; did Dale Thomas get injured?

Played as a defensive forward. Way of the future. 700K players are now employed in a purely defensive manner.

Yeah, I understand the need for balance.. but right now the game is boring, even if you don't want to agree with me.. stats don't lie..

Part of the problem is the insane focus on defence, stoppages, scragging, holding etc etc.. so you don't get to see the talents on display..

I would prefer to see less of the 'slightly over the shoulder brushed his cheek on the way through Joel Selwood specials' paid.. and more 'Gibson bear hug 2 minutes before the ball arrives specials' paid.

This thread again smells of; Opposition players read TAGGERS/DEFENDERS infringe upon Essendon players. This fails to address that Essendon players commit the same offences. Defenders have held onto forwards since 1861 and I would argue there is less holding on than 20 years ago.

this isnt essendon related at all, its the broader game.

The tone of the posts in this thread and other threads indirectly refer to Essendon. I never read Essendon posters complainthat our defenders or taggers mishandle or scrag their opponents. Never !

Well it is the Essendon board so we're likely to focus on those decisions that impact us but blind Freddy knows it's a league wide problem.

You're right in your previous post that there is less holding now than 20 years ago. Guys like Steve Silvagni and Mick Martin would today need to play a very different style of 1:1 defence to what they did.

There does seem to be serial offenders that get away with holding and scragging moreso than others. For me 2 that instantly spring to mind are Gibson and O'Brien (La Bumba, whatever). Whether stats back that or not is something I can't be bothered looking up, but for mine it is the exceptions that are annoying.

As for taggers holding/scragging, I'm fine to have them pinged if they go outside the rules of the game.

Silvagni basically did what the rules allowed him to do at the time. He managed to stay just that millimetre the right side of the line.

He was a Blue so I'm loathe to admit it, but he's almost certainly the best full back I've seen. Would have loved to have seen him play up forward more too- the few occasions he did it, he inevitably did well.

In an era of gun full forwards (Lockett, Dunstall, Ablett, Modra etc) there were certainly some gun full backs at the time too. Silvagni, Langford, A Daniher, Martin etc. For mine Silvagni just pips Langford over that era with A Daniher (prior to his knees going to shit) a very close 3rd.

Toby Greene charged with multiple counts of assault. He's always been a bit aggressive. Not surprising in the least

GET HIM IN

offer him a position in the leadership group
I doubt we'll see him play again. He has 10 different charges, all of them very serious (except for drunk in a public place)

yeah I know about his history (in fact, it would not at all surprise me if I recognise the name of his co-accused), but with this kind of thing I always tend to err on the side of giving the bloke another shot, rather than casting him out into no man's land, where he will probably only get worse

I know Toby and if he's guilty, it will be a long prison sentence, that's why I doubt we'll see him play AFL again

Yeah it doesn't look good for him. Will likely not play AFL again unless GWS do something silly like let him play pre-trial.

At least Goddard tried to tame the beast :(
