I've said the same thing before and been shouted down. The way he gets pumped up by some, it's impossible for him not to be. A great example that's in the delusional pearlers thread, where a commentator said he's the greatest defender of the last 20 years, ie greater than SOS.
Yep, I remember hearing that and just thinking wtf. I think it was said last season, at which point he'd had, what, one and a half very good seasons? Rance's first AA jumper was an absolute farce. He was probably the 6th or 7th best key defender that year but got in because of the "feel good" Richmond story and he had a good second half to the year. Carlile, Trengove, Talia all had better years and missed off the top of my head.Unless I am missing someone it's really only Silvagni and Scarlett that you could say are ahead of Rance.
Not sure that anyone can say that they've been better than what Rance has been in the last three years. Scarlett has more AA jumpers during the relevant period but SOS does not. How many times did Fletcher played on an opponent's best forward in the last 10 years of his career?
By the end of this year Rance will have played 100 games that rival anyone who has played in the last 20 years. That has to put him in the conversation. Given that he is currently 27 and seemingly at least three years of his prime left he is every chance of pulling ahead of the pack.
But yeah, best of last 20 years? Christ.

No conversation about the best full backs of the last 20 years is complete without Mal Michael. Absolute gun.Yep. Remember when he got that first AA and basically everyone was just potting the selectors because he had more AA's through half a good year than Mal Michael, who was basically a monster at FB from 01-04?
This is the problem with AA as a metric to prove anything. It's based on nothing more than how hard people like Gerard Healy get over certain players. Barracking for the interstate sides is his shtick.I can't stand Gerard Healy.
Yesterday he called for 2 DOOBs that would have been crazier than anything we have seen yet. In one he suggested that Colyer deliberately dribbled a ball out of bounds from 60 m to avoid kicking a point and advantaging Fremantle with a quick restart. Clearly, he was hoping for a point and the quick restart and his bias affected his ability to think and see that Colyer was in fact trying to kick a goal. The effort that he and Dwayne went to manufacture excitement about Hurley's 60m goal and Joe's right foot snap was also laughable.

Really, i haven't noticed but i haven't looked out for it eitherBarracking for the interstate sides is his shtick.
More than likely. Probably enjoys championing something other than shit opinions.Really, i haven't noticed but i haven't looked out for it either
Maybe it was his time at the Swans?

LOL was it deeeeeeeeerwaynne! I was watching in a dark corner of the RSL in Wagga Wagga reserved for foxfooty and the sound was pretty low. They merged into one another for me - GerwayneThat Colyer one was imbecilic commentary - Deeeerwayne was the first to go with "that might be deliberate!!" for the out of bounds......hmmm, let's just think a sec Deeeerwayne (I understand that might be a bridge too far), Colyer is streaming through the centre square with no one inside 50 and therefore an open goal square and his intention with the kick was to get it out of bounds.....yep, sounds plausibleAbsolute dolts.

No conversation is also complete without Glenn Jakovich. The man gets so little credit outside WA, but is the only man to consistently dominate Carey (and every one else)No conversation about the best full backs of the last 20 years is complete without Mal Michael. Absolute gun.

Mal Michael was a very good contributor for Brisbane but I would argue he wasn't even the Lion's best defender at the time (Leppa had 3 AA from 1999-2003)
Nowhere near the Scarlett's or SOS's of the world.
I would have Rance in top 5 but not above other discussed, partly because he literally saves richmond 3-4 goals a game and holds up an otherwise mediocre backline. The amount of times he covers ground to make up for inept teammates is unreal.
1. SOS
2. Scarlett
3. Jakovich
4. Fletcher
5. Rance
I think he plays the Tony Grieg role to balance the commentary. Theoretically it shouldn't be required if the other callers did their jobs properly.Really, i haven't noticed but i haven't looked out for it either

Talia was in. Carlile & Trengove were solid but no where near AA calibre. Mackenzie was the unlucky one.
