It's sad that the historic cathedral has had significant damage but it sounds like the structure remains intact and the artifacts were removed prior to the renovations starting.

The calls from Malcolm Turnbull for Australia to establish a fund to help restore the place are OTT. France is a modern, wealthy country. It's not like it's a natural disaster in the third world that has killed thousands.

Agree, it is a sad day that an 800 year old structure with so much historical and cultural significance suffered such devastating damage, but surely the combination of France and the Catholic church have enough funds to restore the structure.

Australia has no place here other than extending our condolences.

Such a loss.

Honestly i'm not sure a Notre Dame 2.0 would feel the same. Almost think it would be better to build a cheaper museum honouring the history of the original (depending of course on how much of the original structure can be salvaged.)

Re; funds for restoring it the Catholic Church really should not call for donations at all given how loaded they are, a suspect they might though.

It's owned by French state. The Catholic Church won't need to dip into their billions.

That's typical Turnbull for you. The government of Australia should be giving money up for an old building located in a wealthy European country. Doubt there's anyone at home in Australia who could use that money, though I'm sure such folks would be invisible to Malcolm. That comment sums up Malcolm perfectly - out of touch.

Even more reason Australia has no place in this scenario. In the hypothetical situation where the French needed funds to rebuild a Catholic cathedral and the Catholic church wouldn't put their hand in their pocket then why should we?

It's a shame Turnbull's comments seem to be resonating more than the disaster that has befallen one of the most beautiful and culturally significant buildings in world.

My daughter (who was born in Toulouse) rang me up at around 6am this morning absolutely shattered, we took her to Notre Dame when she was seven and it's been her favourite place every since. She loved everything about the Cathedral, the architecture, the gargoyles, the rose windows and the huge columns. When she went to Uni in England, she would travel down to Paris once a month and would always visit the Cathedral.

Turnbull's comments were stupid and should be forgotten. The real tragedy is the potential loss of one of the greatest buildings in the world.

windsor castle says hi

most of what you see in europe isn't as old as it looks. lots have been destroyed by fire or war and then rebuilt.

I don't care for religion but the loss of such a grand building is a loss for all

Turnbull should dip into his own millions first. I’d be happy to pay a small sum of my own money to help fund its reconstruction (it is a magnificent building), but the government shouldn’t.

These things are like the Ship of Theseus. They only survive over centuries because they are constantly rebuilt.

Rebuild with a couple of minarets, keep everyone happy.
Good chance to bring the place into the 21st century, get a nice modernist architect in there for repairs and we can render the outside.

Call me crazy, but who really cares? I get it if you're some kind of artists/historian that visits the area quite often but 99.9% of people aren't so really it's no different than the local Sizzler burning down.
Sizzlers are quite rare, an important cultural artefact.
