We draft the best available player. It is as simple as that.

What he said.

Pretty simple to me...the best available.

A key forward is the most pressing need, but if the best available is a midfielder, no harm done.

Just means the next pick MUST be used on a key forward!

Anyone still want that Zippitydooda bloke or whatever his name is? The indigeneous player that was taking that mark in the photo...I think Phoenix wanted him...

Anybody? From WA. I think. Looks like a bigger version of O'Laughlin. IIRC from what people were saying...one of those "could be anything, could be nothing" type players.

And yes I've already searched, but can't find anything...Sezposito or something...

Obviously you need to have contingcy plans in case a player has already been taken so how about this for a plan - in order of preference

How about this -

pick 8 - Hartlett/Ziebell/Sidebottom mids

pick 26 - Lynch/Cahill key forwards/ Roughead ruck

pick 58 - MaCauley/Rhys Stanley rucks/ Casey Sibosado key forward

I think ideally Vickery would go at 8 to us. That would be our recruiters number 1 scenario. I do think though Vickery will go to Port at 4, Essendon will take Hurley at 5.

Therefore left are the following touted as top 10 picks:

Ziebell
Hartlett
Yarran
Sidebottom

with Johnston, Trengove and perhaps even McKernan available as the next best KPP's - but are someway off the mids above and would be considered a bit of a reach at pick 8.

I personally hope Carlton or Brisbane take Yarran leaving us to pick up Ziebell or Hartlett. I think if both of them went before us we would not take Yarran - I don't think a small forward is something we have high on our list of needs.

I think Carlton are a big chance to take Yarran - we have seen this year how much Rioli and Hawthorns forward line have stepped up with a bit of youth and energy snapping at the ankle of their bigmen. I think Carlton will see real merit in taking Yarran to get around the feet of Fev, Waite etc.

Personally I'd much much rather see us take Ziebell or Hartlett before Sidebottom. He was always considered a first round pick around the forum but on the back of one big game his stocks have rose. Hartlett has been playing SANFL and Ziebell is just pure pure class. I know many would strongly disagree - but I wasn't OVERLY impressed by Sidebottom's game in the TAC Grand Final. Sure he had 30+ touches but many were ineffective especially in the first quarter, throwing the ball on his foot to noone in particular. His decision making and reaction time werent rapid.. I just think he will be a solid AFL player but not a star, where as Hartlett and Ziebell i definately think have that in them. But that's just my thoughts.

So for me, if we can nab Hartlett or Ziebell I'd be over the moooon. Not to fussed on which one as i think only one may be available.

If both gone, obviously Vickery, if all three gone which i feel is a distinct possibility - I'd probably take Sidebottom or Trengove.

At 26 I think we should take a KPP if we take a mid at 8 and vice versa.

I'm confident that our team of recruiting professionals will bring the right players to the club.
Players that will fit in and compliment our already exciting list, while placing their own individuality and flair across the team.

Being developed by the premium coaching staff in the AFL ensures their success, and gives them exposure to top notch professional coaching and facilities.

Well done to TW and his team for having the capabilities and framework that make Richmond the club of choice for all young stars across Australia :thumbsu:

yeah especially when they have no choice when their name is called at the draft table. ;)

Vickery won't be around when it's our turn. Most likely will go to Port at No 4.
If he doesn't go to Port he is likely to be around at our pick. It will be interesting to see which way they go. I disagree that Trengove is any less of a talent than the mids in this draft - it's just that he's been injured and off the radar. I think he could be an absolute gun. The club will have a list, and cross them off as they are taken ahead of our pick. Highest one left will be taken, just a matter of who they rate.

Whitey is in our best 22 easily and KJ is not.

FACT

*waits for raft of posters to disagree*

why do you think a "raft of posters" will disagree with you, are you insecure or something?

on general consensus, everyone here agreed with your sentiment before you even even posted it but the thing is, it wont turn out like that.

what we want and what we get are two completely different plays.

and like the words "Diva" and "Jazz", people misconstrue the word "FACT" so much these days.

either your a misguided english student with an already spent youth or you see yourself as a raging cyclone that sucks everything into your vortex!

a Fact is Fact. Its a quantified truth, not your ****ing opinion!

This is the best way to go. Take the best available.

Especially with early picks. Rookie Draft is where you go for need I reckon. If you end up with a mountain of talented midfielders, so be it, then you can trade one for a positional need.

Essendon asked Calder Cannons staff to give them detailed info on 15 of their players who are in the draft this year. Apparently super keen on McKernan and rate him higher than Trengove who is a star when fit. They are considering him at 5 apparently. Personally think this is foxing thought. McKernan is a freak athlete but i doubt he is as dependable as the usual suspects for the top 8.

There is also talk of Carlton signposting their interest in going tall in this draft. For me this makes sense. They are short at least one gun tall in my opinion. They may be tempted by Yarran and he is probably a better fit than Hartlett, Sidebottom but they don't have the luxury of a plethora of talls like the Hawks. Ziebell may be a good fit as he can play inside - allowing Judd to use his speed more, Stevens to continue being a squib and Gibbs to play outside. He can also go forward as he is tall and has good hands overhead.

Again saying they will go tall could be foxing. But i feel their preferences would be, in order, Hurley, Vickery, Ziebell, Yarran. That is unless Trengove proves he will make a full recovery and they may place him at the top of his list. I hope he does come good because that allows us more choice at 8.

And I know that some of you feel that Sidebottom is not worth pick 8, however i think he has a skill set which will make him a very good AFL player. Perhaps not a star but very good. He has elite endurance - something which makes D Cross so good, Crawf and Harvey. This means he should be able to take his ball winning ability into the AFL. He has terrific foot skills on both feet - essential in today's possession game. And he is good overhead.
