The Australian Rugby League Commission has announced a change to the 2012 Telstra Premiership Finals Series at today’s NRL Chief Executives’ meeting in Sydney.

On the day of the official season launch, the Commission informed clubs that it had accepted a recommendation to move away from the McIntyre system which had been a part of the Telstra Premiership since 1999.

For the first time since 1996, the competition will split the top four and the bottom four finalists into separate pools in week one of the Telstra Premiership Finals Series (The Australian Rugby League used such a model in both 1995 and 1996).

Common sense prevails and they finally change it to a finals system that works. Why it took so long when the AFL has been enjoying this system for so long is beyond me.

Actually it was used in the 1995 competition. Both systems have advantages and disadvantages.

Actually it was used in the 1995 competition. Both systems have advantages and disadvantages.

The original McIntyre system (1v8 etc) has few positives and many negatives. While it makes sense mathematically, in reality, it's a failure. The revised McIntyre system is not perfect, but it is better.

Another negative of the 1995 ARL system is the top 2 teams are not rewarded, having to play the other best 2 teams of the entire season. Yes, I know they get compensated for this in week 2/3 but in Rugby League the extra physical nature of those blockbuster matches could mean that there is a number of injuries out of these matches disadvantaging teams heading into the more important finals.

The biggest thing behind this move is the added revenue the game will get out of having more "blockbusters" during the finals series.

No, the current AFL system which is similar but slightly more robust

It's the same system, the only difference is the switch over happens in week 3 instead of week 2.

I think you're just looking for a fight.:D

The NRL in 1995 had the 1v4 2v3 5v8 6v7 format up until the super league war started. After the factions had finally re-joined, they agreed to use the 1v8 2v7 3v6 4v5.

Finally sense has returned and this sytem is back. It means that every match NOW means something worthy.

Happy with this move.

Allows for more fairer and more flexible fixturing of the finals series which then allows the Channel 9 (or any future TV networks a better say on which teams play in which timeslots.

Good first move by the Commission

and teams in the bottom 4, particular 5th place who may end up on the same competition points as 4th, get very little reward for winning games. I guess they get substituted with a home game first up though.

Tend to agree with you so I am more than happy this move was made so quickly after most clubs complained about it over the past few years.

BTW the second good move by the new Commission was that Grant attended the Melbourne Storm Launch for season 2012, mending the bridge that was created by the salary cap saga in 2010.

This part is actually incorrect. Each year there was a vote by the clubs on the McIntrye system with each year that system winning the vote.

That's not what I read on a few forums, but having said that it may have been that a lot of the fans were complaing and some of the clubs were taking notes even though there was a majority vote to keep it.

Yeah exactly, what is on the popular belief on forums isn't always correct.

So we are back to rewarding teams who lose finals.

Great.

What is this in reference to Meltiger?

Yes.

1st are rewarded with a double chance for their failure.

you want to re-think this statement???

1st and 2nd were always guaranteed double chance.

Remember last year, warriors finished 6th and LOST their first final, yet still got a double chance and nearly won the whole comp because of it.
