Whilst I agree the kid is probably the most outstanding draftee for probably five years, I believe he will be a two year player at most for the club that drafts him- if it isn't Adelaide. He and his family (and the AFC for that matter) have been absolutely shafted by the vic-centric AFL and he will be a boomerang, mark my words.
You're spot on blockerhall. That would be the biggest concern going into the trade. Probably only a Prelim or Grand Final appearance in those two years would convince him to stay. Stranger things have happened though.

Thats a definite risk but his old man was a Perth boy and if any club outside SA had a chance to keep him its a WA club.

Gibbs may or may not be similar to Brendan Goddard.

So lets not throw away our list just to secure an unknown. Our picks will reflect where we finish on the ladder, hence lets draft smartly with the picks we are given and see what happens.

Only when a trade comes up in our favour should we trade. Or if we are forced by a player wanting to go home.

I'm happy with our list at the moment. Though we should use our first pick for a midfielder, and probably our second too, and perhaps our third.

Goddard is playing some pretty fair football this season, and I would happily have him on our list for eg Polak, Murphy or Medhurst.

Goddard is playing good footy now, probably came good right at the end of 2005.

He was the number one pick in 2002 and a further example that getting a high pick does not garrantee imediate impact.

Agree. Not many first year players are going to turn a team around immediately. Haselby was great in his first year, then has a whole new scenario once you have a reputaion, and get given some responsibilities. Plus, Goddard is a tall midfileder KP player (eventually)

I agree, and history has shown that many times. The difference in this case is that Gibbs now is miles ahead of Goddard when he got drafted. He is way ahead of Ball and Hodge when they got drafted too. Goddard had potential written all over him, Gibbs has superstar written all over him. Only trading when we get a great a deal or a proven AFL performer is great advice and of course I agree, but a chance at a player like Gibbs does not come around very often. He is so good a player that I feel that reason should be thrown out the window, and serious cards should be laid on the table. I rate Polak more highly than most and would hate to see him traded, but if putting him, and our first round pick, on the line would net us Gibbs, it would be worth it long term. I know it sounds reckless, not to mention insulting to Polak's worth as player, but trust me Gibbs is worth it.

Interesting comment Roundhouse. A couple of questions for anyone who has some thoughts. If we did manage to secure Gibbs, and he does turn into a superstar as you are predicting;

1) Is a team with a superstar in the mid-field witha superstars salary better equipped than a team with a better all round mid-field. The Eagles have created a fab midfield at the expense of other aspects of their team. With a salary cap keeping a lid on things they appear to be gambling that the mid-field can create more scoring opportunities for an ordinary forward line.

2) Is the difference between a superstar (say Judd) and a very good player (say Kerr) worth the difference in a) what you pay to secure them (Mundy plus pick 8 for pick 1) and b) is their salary worth more than a couple of very good players (say Kerr and ... J Carr)???

Apologise for using Eagles, but given that Roundhouse is putting Gibbs in the same league as Judd they seem like the example to use. Hope my questions make sense.
