Number one contested player in the AFL

On SEN Run Home tonight Scott Lucas was talking about the stat of percentage of contests won as a team and individually. We sit pretty low, as expected unfortunately.

He then went on to say that Lonergan from Geelong was third, losing only 12% of contests he's been in. Harry Taylor was second, losing something like 7% of contests.

But the first player in the league, winning or halving 97% of contests (something like 33 to 1) was LUKE DELANEY.

I almost drove off the road at that point. :)

He went to St Kilda uncontested

Delaney coming first proves that the stat being used is a steaming pile of dung.

Is it a contest if you are 5 metres behind your opponent?
That's a very interesting question in deed. Wonder how Champion Data would have rated Delaney's game on Schultz a few years ago?

As explained on the mainboard.

If you don't make a contest you don't lose it.

He's done well body on body but that stat is not a direct reflection of him as a defender, there are far more relevant stats that must be viewed as a whole. Even the St Kilda fans admit his disposal is disgusting.

Similarly you could say Player X is the best marking player in the league because he has 30 more marks than anyone else. But it's far easier to take an uncontested mark than a contested one so who is to say that Player X isn't just getting a heap of cheapies.

The danger of looking at a single stat in action.
