Club has chosen a model to stay competitive, as opposed to bottoming out, getting priority picks and boosting draft capital.

The difference between finishing 4th and say 14th is around 1300 draft points across the first 4 rounds. That’s a Pick 10 or 11. Across 4 of the last 6 years, that’s a whole lotta talent.

Our lack of draft capital is because we were competitive but not good enough to win a flag. The issue is that Adelaide will never be a destination city, and our model requires us to get free agents to keep the draft capital up.

Also having to pay up for JHF and possibly NAS, the northern academies have gotten there players at much better rates.

The club has had mini rebuilds but over time, the draft capital just lessens and lessens. Tis the Hinkley legacy.

So, if we had chosen the crows model and proper bottomed out, we would have had more draft capital, but might have lost Bergman, maybe Butters, and struggled to get NAS?

This is why the Northern Academies have the best lists, or the teams that were fattened with father-sons or priority picks (before equalisation) or can recruit constant free agents have the best lists.

Still in saying that, I’d rather have the stars, and then try and improve the rest/depth of the list, then have no stars like St Kilda or Norf
Agree

Honestly the money is completely irrelevant. If you can fit it in the cap and not lose players because of it, it makes zero difference. We have been well known to have ample cap space due to the salary management and rolling over the cumulative underspend.

Absolutely crazy, 2 mill a year for someone who’s spent most of his time on a HBF in a shit side as a designated kicker.
He’s definitely one of the best players and has a high ceiling but that’s a lot of money.
If he’s coming for that amount, he’ll probably be a full-time inside mid; no way he’s coming to play mostly at HBF as a designated kicker on that coin.

I totally agree with this, we have had the cattle in the past, absolutely.

My perspective is that we're stale, theres limited scope for improvement, and just picking Hinkley-lite for our 2026 coach, without some significant change is a recipe for disaster.

The club truly believes they arent far off, that it can be turned around by trying harder for longer, by tidying up small bits. Its totally incorrect. We're fundamentally flawed, and continuing on our current trajectory is a recipe for disaster over the next few years with the position of our list.

If our squad isnt given a massive jolt, a huge refresh and a completely new perspective, breaking from the demons of the past, we'll continue our slide.
So are you suggesting we have to full nuclear, blow the list up trade out Butters for draft capital, not pursue Nas because of the cost etc. A full complete stripping of te list therefore bottoming out and then trying to rebuild over 6 years during Tassies entry. How far do you want to go.

Obviously, you wouldn’t pay that for a Houston upgrade.
It’s a sign of the times and I’m sure others will join him on that sort of money soon.
With higher pay there comes higher expectations especially with supporters.

We should really be paying our top dogs well and then all the fringe/depth players can get modest salaries..

Any players that out out contract like Burton, Boak, Finlayson, McEntee, Williams, Anastasopolous, Charleson, etc that we decide to keep can stay for minimum wage. Doubt they’ll get more anywhere else but they can still be serviceable depth players.

A lot of others like Liddy, Mackinlay, Ramm, Lord, Visentini, Berry, Whitlock, Moraes, Barrett should be on minimum wage until the prove themselves.

I actually like the model of of the vast majority of your cap going to your stars. I think in the past the shit players have been paid too much and player salaries have been too even, up to this point your scrubbers could be on 500k but your star players only a couple hundred thousand more but looks like it’s shifted considerably this year and suddenly all the stars are looking at being paid in the $1mill to $2mill.

I don’t follow other sports overseas but I suspect the NBA and EPL would work like this.

Losing Butters defeats the purpose of getting Nasiah. I would say this, unless Butters has privately indicated he is leaving already we would not be asking him to leave. It would be like asking peak Lockett to leave - oh sorry.
When Lockett left St Kilda, they made a grand final.

Every Grand Final won over the last 10 years has been won by a side without Butters in it.

Absolutely want to keep him but we move on if we don’t.

It has been mentioned several times on the Saints board and the main board that Terry Milera works for Port.

Is this true and if so what does he do?
