Just quietly - how immense has Cotch been the last 4 or 5 weeks, both as a leader and player? He's working himself back toward 2012 form, and since he was copping so much flak at the start of the year, it's awesome to see him back to playing great footy.

Silence by most in the media has been deafening.
The silence is hilarious, they can't even accept they were wrong and that Cotch is not the worst captain in the league, may not be the best but he's far from the worst.

He isnt close to hus 2012 form where he was a top 3 mid in the game, but he is having a very good season.

His 2012 was sublime. Honestly his impact then was immense, everything he touched turned good.

Yeah, but he's on his way back.
Helps that Dusty is back at the coalface.
Imagine what would happen if Tigga was let loose in the guts as well.

The stats would suggest he's right back to his 2012 form.
I think there's bias toward new players tbh.

Silence by most in the media has been deafening.

The "Trent Cotchin is the least effective elite midfielder in the AFL" thread has gone dead quiet since the Melbourne game. There was a bit of activity in there when he picked up just 19 possessions against Port, but went quiet again when it was revealed he broke his cheekbone in the first few minutes.

I always thought it was unfair the amount of criticism Cotchy got. He certainly isn't the best captain (Hodgey has that claim) but he is very good captain in his own right and is certainly performing better then a lot of other captains who are only now getting the spotlight as they deserve.

If you look at Cotchy's whole career as Captain then he's been doing alright. Cotchy has a 60% win rate as captain is leading the most competitive side we've fielded in decades. While that stat is depressing and one might argue that he is benefiting from a period of stability from our club it doesn't change the fact that he is a better performing captain then the likes of Travis Boak and Scott Pendlebury, both of which captain teams expected to play finals like Richmond was. Boaky has a 56.6% win rate during his Captaincy and Pendles a lowly 44% and yet Cotch had the bulk of the media attention nitpicking his leadership skills. It's easy to point to his last two elimination finals performances but they are just two games out of the 46 games across those seasons and they are not a true representation of his abilities as a captain.

He's doing all right. He's one of the main reasons we've made the finals in the past and I'll back him to take us back there again. It might not be this year but we'll get there.

Recent AFL article mentioned he is in top 20 in the comp for meters gained aswell. Hmmm...
tbh metres gained is a shit stat. I'd far prefer a switch at midfield over a 60m bomb down the line. It's more of a rugby stat, efficiency and score involvements are a far better indicator of what a player does with it IMO

What would happen if Tigga was in the guts more often is that one of Dustin, Cotch or Miles would spend less time in the guts.

I agree with you 100%, I love Cotch, probably my favourite player in the team and competition, yeah occasionally he'll have a shit game but the majority of the time he'll be one of if not the best on ground. Unfortunately for Cotch two of his shit games were elemination finals and that's what his critics remember the most.

thats cos they look for evidence to confirm their perception of him...they ignore the 10 awesome game he has then zone in on the one poor game... do they honestly expect him to be perfect every week?

And that's what he needs to work on ... getting us across the line in an elimination final (not that he gets a chance this year).
It's similar to Martin last round. The whole 'media silence being deafening'. We all know Martin is a great player, but he needs to do what he did last week in the last quarter and lift us to victory against North Melbourne, Hawthorn, Geelong. That's what separates guys like Cotch and Martin and Hodge and Selwood.

Agreed, it's a pretty useless statistic. But the main criticism on Trent earlier in the year is that he always kicks/handballs backwards or to the side and just racks up meaningless touches. If nothing else it dispels the myth that he always goes backwards.

I think with the interchange cap (mooted to be reduced again next year), that works fine.
An expanded, rotating supply of hard-bodied skilled extractors can only improve Cotch's effectiveness in my view (and allow him and Dusty to spend more time resting dangerously up forward).

Captaincy wasn't the cause of his form slump...

It was... HAYDEN BALLANTYNE

Friday 26th April, 2013. Round 5 Richmond Vs. Fremantle

Cotchin's first year as captain, he continues his career best form into the new year, averaging over 30 touches a game... Until the shitbreak, Hayden Ballantyne injures Cotchin's knee. Ever since that game his output dropped dramatically and has never seemed to move the same since.

The stats don't lie... 8 votes in the first 3 rounds... Hayden cost Cotchin back to back Brownlow wins.

Unfortunately I think they do. He's not perfect though, no one is.

Yeh, dont be a stats man. If you watch any footy its clear his 2012 was on a whole other level.

What I hate is he was pilloried for a perceived lack of leadership, even when he won a truck load of the pill, yet Boak has had zero accountability even when he is only getting in the 20's for possessions.
