Occupy Adelaide

The Occupy movement has come to Adelaide with a tent city (well more a very small town really) setting up in a corner of Hindmarsh Square.

They are doing their best to keep out of peoples' way because we are polite protestors in Adelaide.

They should be camping out outside Norwood Oval, at least there's some nice restaurants nearby.

There was a rumour that the occupy Melbourne mob were going to have a human chain or something outside the gates of the Cox Plate a few weeks ago. I was there with my punt club which was 13 other blokes mostly from Darwin.

We offered the cops $500 each to turn a blind eye while we had a "word" with them about gainful employment, personal hygiene and other associated matters.

The Victorian Police said they would call us if they rocked up. ;)

Jasmin is a great restaurant right on Hindmarsh square, but their infamous Tindaloo* is probably not the ideal diet for a whole bunch of protestors sharing um, communal facilities.

* "for those who think the Vindaloo is mild" to quote the menu from memory

The ACC put out an eviction order but changed their mind. Now they are seeking legal advice and will produce a report.

If the ACC act with the alacrity applied to the Le Cornu's site the Occupy Adelaide group will move on out of sheer boredom long before a decision is reached.

As far as food goes they have the Griffin's and Crowne Plaza nearby too (sa well as a raft of Rundle St eateries and a few fast food establishments). But really their staple will be bin food.

What is this movement you guys are talking about? If they receive free board and lodging by the ACC I may consider joining :)

For the record the Raj on taj at Unley is hands down the best Indian in town and has been since 2000. I would drive from Kersbrook to eat there easily and if you love Jasmin please go there, you won't go back, Chicken Vindaloo with Riata OMG my mouth is watering

There is a restaurant thread OT, oops I mean Fishing, Rick ... ;)

Wow these people are crazy. I've seen them in San Fran and just saw them tonight in New York (ill put up a pic). They all seem high and reek of faeces. They have these great ideas but just sit around, doing yoga, blocking traffic and pestering people on the streets all the while playing some very strange voodoo music.

Maybe they are trying to express a message that life isn't just about materiality and greed and even though an inconvenience, there is some method to the madness?

I live walking distance from Beyond India, Harvest & Arya on O'Connell St but I'll give the far distant side of the city a go one day ;)

Makris in the paper again the other day saying the GFC put a temporary stop to his plans but that he'd never sell the site. The meme that the ACC was the obstruction re the site is, always has been bollocks - not to suggest ACC weren't pains in the butt or difficult everywhere else - but ironically not in this case/site, the most well watched of the last 30 years.

Anyway back sort of On Topic if protesters invaded Con's Site [what it should rightly be called to frame the issue incorrectly ] police have every right to sort it out quick smart being private property. bloody dangerous too because there was still a bunch of building material/foundations laying around there before they put the fence up. not to mention Implements of Drug use from the decade of slow decay as an open space.

So they are angry that some people went to School then Uni, studied hard and graduated, found gainful employment worked hard to make the top in their chosen field and are now reaping the material rewards for all their years of endeavour?

**** the stinking hippies. Get the fire hoses on the lot of them, at least then if they don't move on they won't stink as much.

Occupy sydney protester went on tv and complained she didnt have money to afford a house.... While previously they showed her using her 'spare time' graffitying an unused office block.... Stop wasting your time breaking the law and Get a job. Job=money=a place to live.... Problem solved

this is a bit more like it.

rather than give them a potentially devastating 20 second sympathy soundbite (firehose + coppers) get local Health folks to take e-coli readings around tent city, and then show any kids they've got with them playing on the ground.

we know how Big Dumb Media works !!

Er, a job may = equal money but doesn't equal the ability to afford a house, especially in Sydney.

The 1% aren't the only ones who have an education and have worked hard in the US or elsewhere. The fact they messed up and got a massive bailout while every other schleb has to deal with their f ups probably plays a part in the anger in the US as well.

The occupy movement seems to be an argument against the distribution of wealth as it currently stands in America. The whole thing won't work as well out here because we aren't doing as badly and there hasn't been massive bailouts to corporations. That and the fact you don't have to sell body parts in order to get decent hospital treatment, etc. It's a US thing and possibly Europe.

How about a new movement ... Occupy a job! :D

If u cant afford it (i cant) then dont live there. Just because someone else has it better does not entitle one to the same privilege....

Occupy crap is just an excuse for people to have a sook about whatever they want... Im sure 90% of those muppets dont even understand the core principles of what its about... defacing property and housing merely contradicts the arguments they crap on about...

Go and occupy the bottom of a lake or something...

The people whinging about the whingers dont know what its about either. Even if you own a house and are quite rich with a massive income you're probably not a part of the '1%'.

It refers to the top one percent of Americans in terms of wealth, who control over 40 percent of the total financial wealh.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_One_Percent#cite_note-0 Aka, billionaires who make millions by twiddling their thumbs on the toilet.

My method to their madness would be to lock the idiots up, they get a roof over their unwashed heads and better than they deserve meals.

My number 1 method would be to line the bastards up against the wall, but that would be frowned upon by most, unfortunately ...

Riot police move on Occupy Wall Street movement

Damn just missed all the action. I like this part of the article though :D

At 1am local time, New York City police handed out notices from Brookfield Office Properties, owner of Zuccotti Park, and the city saying that the park had to be cleared because it had become unsanitary and hazardous. Protesters were told they could return in several hours, but without sleeping bags, tarps or tents.

This is part of the flaw with our monetaRY SYSTEM. Opps, eventually at this rate a few enetities will own everything, with anti trust laws being only the thing stopping them! Otherwise 1 entity would eventually own it all I would imagine!

Too many people these days have a victim mentality, I see it in the office all the time. It's almost like they get addicted to sympathy and handouts. It's always the same people making the same mistakes wanting financial hardship relief, either by design or by neglect!

Pretty early in the piece when it was only Occupy Wall Street the Colbert report did an interesting piece which tongue in cheek showed firstly that it was a daytime thing (a big proportion chose to go home at night) by the weirder fringe of society. And secondly that there are quite a few ordinary people who think the high reward/no risk behaviour of the financial sector is very much on the nose but cannot bear to align themselves with the Occupy movement. The nasty/crazy Tea Party movement in the US oddly has some of the concerns of the Occupy movement but has been far more successful politically.
