Off topic - a great article on economic ideologies

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Mods, feel free to remove this, if you so desire, but I thought, given we are far from the beginning of a footy season, and having just had an interesting debate about various economic ideologies and their pros and cons, maybe this is a worthwhile discussion to be had.

We all feel like we almost know each other, through reading and posting over several years. Surely we can handle a mature discussion, for those who are interested in the subject?

Please read this article in full, and whether you agree with it or not, it's certainly worth a read IMO.

As much as we do indeed feel like we know each other EH, this piece of work is so far off the topic of footy and North Melbourne that it's for the Lounge. I know it won't receive the traffic it would out here on the NM Board, but it's where it belongs. If it's any consolation mate, I won't delete it.

It's a slow news period so hopefully you'll have some replies. I'm sure the budding Economics students and general philosophers around these parts will read it in full, as you ask of them, and they'll hence have an opinion.

I may even read it myself once the heartbreak of the FIFA reaming and MVFC fiasco tonight are cleansed from my system (so, by 2036 or thereabouts).

And while the link remains on the front page (til its bumped off by new topics) youll continue to get linked from there ;)

All threads moved leave a redirect up for a short while DP. It's sorted now anyway.

Tell me about mate. I have been to the Victory game tonight with my son. What an ending!? Now after having time to digest it though, I am less angry at the officials, but Kevin Muscat losing the key header to Reinaldo was costly, just as some other mistakes. Painful, but at least MVFC is back, and finding form.

As to the WC disaster, as pissed off as I was at FIFA all day, again, having had time to reflect, several other thoughts come to mind. Firstly, bribes aside, our bid lacked money and the simple WOW factor. Both Russia and Qatar are putting billions into the stadiums, something we weren't contemplating. All we were offering essentially, was a "pair of safe hands", but no WOW. Maybe what we needed was Lowy saying, I'll personally build 3-4 new stadiums if we get it, as unfair to Frank as it may sound. We simply don't have enough Lowys in this country. And secondly, let's be honest, not nearly enough people in this country give a shit. I came to work distraught, after watching it live, couldn't sleep for the rest of the night, yet to my amazement, nobody else at work cared, or even knew the outcome, or even knew it was due to be announced this morning. The only people who care in Australia are a soccer community, which although not small, is far from mainstream. FFS, the Age poll asking whether you're dissapointed at the decision was only running at 60% yes. So maybe we don't deserve it.

Qatar might be a joke of a decision, which was orchestrated behind the scenes, but we needed to do more in many ways to beat them. More new stadiums, some free buses or trains, something exciting...

PS, please read the article.

What's so brilliant about that article?

It's written by a former economist of the Federal Reseve and a former senior economist of Freddie Mac, so what were you expecting?

The unwillingness to accept capitalism now has an anthropological basis?

He's sailing awfully close to a fascist ideology.

You would think someone from a persecuted race would know better.

Interesting article which raises several topics for discussion.
(it's late and I haven't drank enough red to get right into the spirit of waffling)

One for me which stood out, was the the notion of Capitalistic Rationalism for the good of the community as a whole. An example he used which has particular interest for me due to various personal reasons:

"There are ways to deal compassionately with the cost of drug research for Third World countries. For example, rich countries could give foreign aid that would enable people in poor countries to purchase drugs at fair market prices. However, for idiotarians, it is necessary to portray the issue as a conflict between drug company villains and poverty-stricken victims."

All good and well, but ultimately the successful implementation of such a theory relies on a certain amount of, I don't know, maybe not just compassion, but understanding from the bodies who control the flow of product availability and affordability for those who may not be in a position to necessarily afford it.

Of course this line of discussion diverges to a moralistic tangent and one the o.p probably isn't looking for.

You could also approach the article (and make an argument) from the viewpoint of the North Melbourne Football Club in relation to The AFL.

Hmmm.....deeeeeep.

*philosophical chin rub look*

I never miss going to a Victory game and, whilst I admit our defense should've parked the bus in those final moments, the missed Theo handling the ball a metre outside the box decision which led to the equalizer was a disgrace! Moreso given that emotions were running high on the back of the WC crap.

It's too soon. I can't even discuss it. I'm shattered and pissed off with the single most greedy, self interested, secretive bunch of corrupt lying twats that make up the FIFA ExCo. I'd carpet bomb Zurich now if I had the means.

They're a friggin joke!

BTW, it's not about Australia missing out. It's about FIFA setting very strict criteria which bidding nations must meet then completely ignoring the fact some countries do and don't meet them. They make decisions based on politics and greed, they answer to nobody and are therefore a law unto themselves. Disgraceful! The Russian bid leader was taunting the English bid team 24 hours before the decision's announcement, which wasn't meant to be known by anyone until Sepp opened the envelope, according to Sepp himself, which is the most blatant display of corruption you'd ever see. I'm livid! Again, FIFA are a friggin joke! :thumbsd:

PS, please read the article.

In 2036, or thereabouts. I can't concentrate with steam coming out of my ears and blood dripping from my eyeballs mate.
