UpForGrabs I agree with everything you've said about RATM in this thread.
I gave them lots of time over the years to get to me,listened to all their CD's in the vain hope that I would find something that drew me to them but alas,it never happened.
From my experience they're one of those bands that you either LOVE or just don't care for, there doesn't seem to be any inbetween...kinda like Tool.

I don't see anything special at all in this year's lineup. There have been sooo many better acts in past years that I can't understand how this one sold out in record time. Look at some of the talent on offer from previous BDO's..

1999- Marilyn Manson
Korn
Soulfly
Fatboy Slim
Roni Size
Underworld

2000- Chemical Brothers
Foo Fighters
Nine Inch Nails
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Basement Jaxx

2001- Rammstein
Limp Bizkit
At The Drive In
Black Eyed Peas (before they sucked ass)
Coldplay
Queens Of The Stone Age

2005- Slipknot
Hatebreed
Beastie Boys
System Of A Down
Carl Cox

Sorry for the long-winded post but I just had to get that off my chest. If you look at it the BDO lineups have progressively gotten worse since around 2003 with the exception of '05 and Metallica in '04. But the Big Day Out has much more widespread mainstream appeal now than it did back when I was a youngster.
I'm not saying that's a bad thing either but I remember the days when it was mainly just for the "alternative kids" and a handful of metalheads and that's about it. It's amazing how big it has gotten over the years.

Thats because the Big Day Out organisers spend alot less money getting acts over then they used to. Before theyd target 5 big name bands, nowadays they only go after 3 figuring they can save money pretty much knowing the brand name Big Day Out will sell out shows no matter what they put on. Less pressure to perform

06 line up was really good..

Tool -not my thing but HUGE following
The Killers -the biggest *new* band in the world
MUSE -HUGE following, Massive appeal live
----
Kasabian were REALLY fantastic and seemed to have WAY more fans there then the BDO had catered for...
My Chemical Romance - not for me, but they're now one of the bigger *new* bands
Lupe Fiasco - One of the more credible and innovative young rappers.
Lilly Allen - The biggest new female rapper

...And they're all international acts.. And I've forgotten HEAPS..

I agree with the disapointment in this line up...

Nothing outside of Arcade Fire interests me.

But I don't think BDO is going downhill so to speak.

The promoters have got no balls - pure and simple.

Look at Michael Eavis and Glastonbury. Sure, go ahead and have your bands du jour, but be a bit daring and see what happens. Get someone like Tony Bennett (as an example - he played Glastonbury a few years back).

I know I'm like a broken record sometimes with my love of older music, but what's the harm in going after some of the greats? The Stooges two years ago put on the single greatest festival set I've ever seen and they were three immovable blokes with expanding waistlines being fronted by a 60-year-old former junkie. They well-and-truly shat on a hell of a lot of established bands that day, including the other "what the hell are people getting excited over" band, Franz Ferdinand.

So to the promoters - grow a pair!

Tony Bennett is a bit left field for your average BDO crowd mate. I sort of understand what you're saying regardless. When New Order played a few years back they stole the show, so maybe someone like that would be more tolerable.

Maybe a Depeche Mode or something, just for something a bit old school.

Are doing V Fest as well as Smashing Pumpkins, Queens of the Stone Age, Air plus more.

Two of those bands I wanted to do BDO and now they're doing V Fest.

Mate, Tony Bennett is a bit left-field for anyone but the sit-down cabaret crowd (and not saying that he's part of my dream line-up), but from all reports I've read, the guy went down an absolute treat. And he's not exactly a festival act.

But I see your point. New Order kicked ass a few years back. I'm pretty sick of the attitude people hold that because musicians are old, they cease to be relevant. Iggy & the boys showed two years ago that there's a hell of a lot to be learned when it comes to putting on a great show. Most bands settle for good nowadays and think that's enough.

I'm not just talking of older acts though. There's an absolutely massive amount of great bands out there that don't get a look in because the promoters are too busy giving Grinspoon or Regurgitator another gig.

I'd forgotten about Paul Kelly though. That's four acts I'll go see.
