Swans snare Cats ruckman

Geelong has traded ruckman Paul Chambers to Sydney in exchange for the Swans' second round pick - No.35 overall.

Chambers will take up the ruck vacancy left by dual premiership ruckman Jason Ball, who retired after Sydney's premiership win this season.

Geelong coach Mark Thompson said Chambers always gave his best for the club, but said his move to Sydney was a win/win for all parties.

"Paul has always given us 100 per cent whenever we have called on him and we wish him success at Sydney," Thompson told gfc.com.au.

"We feel with Steven King and Brad Ottens as experienced ruckmen and the continued development of Mark Blake - and the options we have with Henry Playfair and Cameron Mooney - Paul's opportunities would have been limited.

"We wanted to be fair to Paul and the Swans have a need for another ruckman and we have been able to work with Sydney so that everyone benefits.

Originally a rookie list player with Geelong, Chambers made his debut against St Kilda in round four, 2002. He played 32 matches - including eight in 2005 - with the Cats.

His last appearance for Geelong came in round 22, before he named an emergency for the club's elimination final against Melbourne.

Seems to be official, almost.
Bit of a surprise.
Good luck to Sarge. Hope he goes well.
You could NEVER question his effort.

Pick 35 hey not to bad.

Lets all be happy for him and hope he gets more game time.

Sad to see Paul go, but as Bomber said it will be a win win for everyone as it will give him the opp to get more game time under his belt and further develop his game.

Best of luck to him and SFC

I am very surprised about all of this. not saying its a bad move but I am surprised.
Seems Bomber is doing it more for Sarge than anything else. He knows he will only be 3rd string at Geelong maybe 4th. At Sydney he will be 2nd in line and get way more game time than at geelong. Gee Bombers a good bloke.

It's a reasonable deal but we will have big problems should we be hit with injuries again. I wonder if they have something else planned or they are just going to cross the fingers and hope for the best.

Bomber is a fan of Uncos. He's mentioned in interviews before that he loves the way he busts his gut everytime he gets a chance.

What does that mean for Spida's plans to go to the Swans - will they still be keen to get him or will they put their faith in Chambers or does Spida find another club?

Chambers was never going to be any more than a back-up ruckman at the Cattery. Big ticker but extremely limited skills. Mark Blake has far more upside to him.

We have done exceptionally well to get pick 35 for him. Makes me think we may draft a young ruckman as there are a few possibles there.

I'm with Jim. sub 25 would have been good.

A bit surprised this deal went through.
Chambers is a good backup option considering how injury prone King & Ottens are. And Blake is still pretty green.

I'm guessing Blake will be spending summer in the gym then. We'll probably pick up a big tanky bloke from the VFL to be our new battering ram.

Damn, i really liked Tom. Hopefully he gets an opportunity to play some decent minutes with Sydney.

According to AAP, Unco asked to be traded to get more game time - he has only played 32 games in four seasons, including eight this season. Swans have given up on Everitt - Hawks won't budge for less than two first-round picks.

I'm disappointed, I think this is an exceedingly bad decision by the club.

I applaud the character they showed in doing the right thing by Sarge, and I really do hope that he does well at Sydney, but I don't think this trade was in our interests. Still, three kids in the top 35 is not a bad position to be in, I would love to see us inject some enthusiasm into the team.

Tom???

Either you mean Paul or you've got the wrong thread.

It's a nickname,
Paul shares a name with a famous basketball called Tom Chambers.

I am under the impression that he had offers from other clubs, he was out of contract so our bargaining position was diminished. We apparently offered him a one year deal while Sydney has offered him a 3 year deal. If no deal was taken then he would have been taken by someone pre season for no remuneration at all, in the P35 is light but acceptable. Coupled with this Bomber really thing Chambers been an honest contributor and would try to do the right thing by him if possible.

It shows how much more trade ability big, fit guys have. Street and Sarge are hardly world beaters, spent years on our list and if shorter they would have been gone and their original drafting and the work we put into them totally wasted. It points out a little flaw in our list model, Id say we should have 4-5 ruckmen on our books and slowly develop them. Maybe an extra ruckmen and one less of the Gardiner/Haynes type would be better long term at least pick two rookie ruckmen and keep the best after two years

A kid like Andrew Banjanin at the Falcons might be the type of kid I'm talking about. Pick him and bank him for 09+. My policy is to plant the seed and reep our own harvest. All thats need was patience and for thought.

Now this does help us next year and I fear we may chase an other short term solution, like Gardner from WC, and end up with another washed up big guy. I dont trust medicals , every guy we get passes then breaks down

Pick 35? Not good enough. I would have asked for more or simply kept him. Sydney must be pleased to have filled a serious hole in their line up at such little cost. Maybe we should have asked for the resignation of the Swans time keepers in addition to pick 35.
