Federer's arrogance quick to come to the forefront, as it usually does when he's not being interviewed immediately after a win (that is, if he has lost or is commenting on an upcoming match/tournament in depth).

He believes that Nadal having just one day's rest, as well as playing a record-breaking 5 set marathon last 5 hrs and 15 mins, compared to 3 sets, will not disadvantage nadal in the final.

**** off.

I really hope Nadal wins.

I'll be very surprised if Nadal goes down in straight sets. Very surprised. He's too much of a fighter for that to happen to him; especially against Federer.

That being said, I can't see him getting past him, and he'll definately be feeling the results of the semifinal. Federer in four or five to mine, and good on him as he's been the best player this tournament (outside of two sets against Berdych).

this was my tip from day dot of the open and god i doubt it will live up to the hype. i would be more confident in nadal if he had won in straight sets. but a 5 hour match would have taken plenty out of him and this would be a very strong case for the australian open people to tell channel 7 to rack off about having the 2 semi finals on different days. if nadal is to win. he will have to win it in staraight sets. if it goes 5 long sets, the fed express will take the prize

How the hell is that arrogance? It's giving full credit to his opponent. The exact opposite of arrogance.

Christ you're a tool.

He is not giving credit and you have obviously not read the full transcript.

I could write a lot more but your post is full of ignorance for having not read the Q&A..

Oh no, I've offended the federer stans, someone call the police!

You are the tool for twisting a fact to suit your theory, rather than a theory to suit a fact.

edt: Fine, I'll bite your bait.

In very short terms, Federer was justifying the extra rest he has, saying that despite the circumstances of nadal's match (which broke a bloody record), federer in no way has any form of advantage over his opponent, and not due to nadal having any form of awesome recovery ability, but because the timing schedule is fair. Pure arrogance when it is the biggest case of a timing disadvantage I can honestly recall for an Australian Open final. He knows he is the favourite to win this match, and would have confidence in winning, and wants to ensure that if he does win, it will be seen as it coming down to his ability, rather than nadal being disadvantaged coming into the match.

Is fed any chance of getting the no. 1 back if he wins

Should be a good match, I just can't see how Rafa can find the juice after the other night. If he wins this, he truly is one of the greats!

So you would rather Federer say all this?.....

I have a great advantage over my opponent, I'm the favorite to win the match and I'll win this because of my fighting ability....

I'm curious, is it that you hate Federer, or that you would rather all players speak of what is exactly going on in their head, which is what you have mentioned above.

That may well be going through Federer's head, but thats the confidence he is riding on.

Nope. The rankings is all about defending points. Even if Federer wins Nadal gains more points, and Nadal is about 3000 points ahead and Federer lost points in Doha already by losing to Murray.

It's a good thing Rafa is only 22 and will be able to recover fast. If that was Federer on the court for 5 hours he'd have no chance. We'll have to see though. We should know in the first few games how well Rafa's recovered. If he's tight and making unforced errors, it could be over in 3. He is one hell of a fighter though... I also think he was playing better tennis than Federer prior to the semis. It would take a hell of an effort, but he is a remarkably tough player.

Power King, you need to get a hold of a dictionary and look up the word "arrogance". You're not in the ballpark.

edit: Not to say Federer isn't arrogant, he is, but you couldn't have chosen a worse example.

Don't really see Fed being arrogant as a problem either. I think if anyone in sport has earnt the right to be arrogant, it's Fed Ex.

IIRC last year Tsonga played Nadal on the Thursday night and Djokovic played Federer on the Friday night - exactly the same timing as this year. Not sure how you come up with your assumption.

If it was such an issue you would think that they would bring it up with the players association representatives to see if they can change the scheduling.

No, I've personally never had a problem with a champion being arrogant.

Jordan was arrogant as hell, Federer is pretty arrogant, I don't follow golf, but I bet Tiger doesn't come across humble as pie either.

To be that good you must believe no-one can beat you, and to come across as "modest" you basically have to lie whenever interviewed. Occasionally, these guys will slip up and just say what they're thinking.

There's no way around the timing anyway. It is just as big an advantage for one semifinal to be played in the afternoon, and they can't play two in the same night. The 'fairest' way would be to play them at the same time - but that ain't happening any time soon.

Doesn't have to say what is on his mind obviously, just doesn't have to say what he did.

^In hindsight, that is a fair point. Not necessarily arrogance, now I would say it is more disrespect.

^I agree with this. It just annoys me that the naive public (many of which know ****all about tennis, yet pretend they do), think he's a walking saint on earth.

^The thing is djokovic won in straight sets, as did Tsonga. Both relatively straight-forward matches. The way the scheduling is, there is nothing to prevent an unfairness that could occur if a situation arose such as the one that did on Friday night.

And I'm not sure if there is a players association? Don't quote me on this, but I don't think there is one. Nadal and Roddick in the past have been questioned as to their stance on this 'political' area, and what they think about it.

The same issues get brought up at the US open yearly.

It's well known amongst the men's players that Wimbledon has the best scheduling (of course rain can screw this up but that's beside the point).

Geez, the anti-Federer posters are baying for blood again.

I just don't understand the hate for the guy. How can you hate such a fantastic champion? How can you hate one of the best ever?
