'Two or three years ago Hentschel was regarded as the next Lance Whitnall'
By ANDREW JARMAN
05jun06

I SAT back and watched four quarters of pure football magic with the Crows v Essendon. Adelaide demonstrated just how advanced it is in every area of football.

The majority of footballers I speak to around Australia, including AFL players, say they want to be coached by Neil Craig.

If you've got the ability all you need is a coach that teaches - and that's the key at West Lakes.
The Crows boys are laughing because Craigy is a genuine teacher of football.
Look at the unsung heroes. When I watch McGregor, Shirley, Stevens, Mattner, Massie, Bode, Doughty and van Berlo I'm amazed. They do all the hard work with a smile on their face. They throw their bodies in and sacrifice the limelight for their team-mates.

That's what wins premierships.
And look at Hentschel . . . two or three years ago he was regarded as the next Lance Whitnall, slow and fat. Now he's a class player and very close to going to the next level. He's deadset the general down there. It's not the Roo, it's this young kid.

Another bloke who rarely gets mentioned is Robert Shirley.
Not long ago the other AFL coaches would have said "Robert who?" Now he's shutting down the opposition's best on-baller every week.

Obviously, Craigy and the boys won't get ahead of themselves because they flogged the bottom side, which was soft and weak. The hard part was executing the system for four quarters but they did it and that's the scary part for the other clubs. In the back of Craigy's mind is West Coast (round 17) and Collingwood (R18) because he wants to take it to the best sides and dispel any doubts about doing it under finals-like pressure.
Now, the POWER's win was great for the confidence but my mate Choco would have been filthy because they didn't put Carlton away in the second half.

Is Port Adelaide back? . . . not yet. You've beaten the two bottom sides so don't get excited Power fans. The good thing is Pearce, Salopek, Surjan, Ezard, Chaplin - the young blokes - are getting plenty of game time. Listen, Choco, tell the backroom boys to measure up Brendon Lade for the club champion's jacket and I'd put a few bucks on him for the Brownlow.

He's held the group together, him and Chad Cornes.
Choco must put Hawthorn away this week at AAMI but the home record is not good this year.
So the challenge is there to keep developing the young kids and keep winning against the bottom sides because it's going to be a lot harder for Port to win after the split round.

ON Saturday, at Thebarton, my boys were outplayed by a more committed Eagles outfit which should now be the premiership favourite. But it would have been nice for my boys to have a hot shower afterwards. And is it too much to have a time clock you can see?
I know this will fall on deaf ears but can someone pay for my mobile phone bill? I used it all day because the headphones supplied were no good.
We even had umpires walking through our changerooms to get to the oval while I'm trying to fire up my blokes. So don't put us on the program at Thebarton until the facilities are up to league standard. NOW, to the idiot who mouthed off at Dean Brogan. AFL players get counselled to deal with this sort of situation but they're only human and they have their dignity. He should take a good look at himself.

Geez, the comment that they've chosen to use as the headline could've meant anything.

I can scarcely recall a negative word said about Hentschel at any stage. He was always the player the club, and many supporters, had high hopes for. As for being too fat, my recollection of Hentschel in 2003 was of him being quite thin.

Written by a South Australian, Ex Crow, about a Crow in a Small country town where everyone knows each other.

When you find an objective article written by a non related journalist/commentator then I'll happily take the article on board - this is simply more fishbowl journalism :D

I agree, I do find attention to detail much better in these cases ;)

how could it be more objective, it is written by a bloke sacked from the AFC, who is clearly jockeying to be the next coach of port power.

Just for the record people....so that I'm not taken out of context....and for the umpeenth time...

1. Any AFL player that has played over 50 games has to be more than a reasonable player...aka Shirley, McGregor..

2. Shirley has played some very very good footy.

3. We have some up and coming midfielders that must get midfield experience B4 Roo, Edwards, and Goodwin retire.

4. There will have to be players who will have to make way to allow these players to come and play the games req to get to 30-50 games B4 the above trio retire.

5. I have nominated Shirley as the second player to make way for these kids....the first nominated by me was Skippy.

6. Re McGregor my position is that for example if we got Pavlich or a gun KPP in the draft that Kenny would be the first of our KPP to make way like Shirley.

Now folks please do not misquote me in the future :D

I seriously doubt it.

perhaps he can direct us to the originals ;)
the thing is that has been my position from day one and all my posts do reflect that position.

Notice Shirley named as an interchange.....sliding quickly ;) :p

Your newly stated position reverted to its normal status rather quickly WW!! :p

Do you seriously think that Shirley won't play his normal role on Saturday??

Pssstt!! Interchange players can come on and off the ground these days, unlike the reserves of yesteryear. :)
