As stupid as the law is, which it is, we don't have the right to pick and choose which law we find applicable. Like all areas of life.

I have jaywalked many times and been fined once, which I deserved. I knew the law and I broke it knowingly, so there is very little to complain about.

If more people accepted the consequence of their actions then there would be less complaining and more focus on improving ones self.

Yes since getting this fine i've dedicated my life to complaining about it. I quit my job and stopped doing yoga and quigong in order to focus my energy on campaigning against the fine. This thread isn't even the tip of the iceberg in terms of the energy i've spent on thinking about this fine.

When i die i would like a mention of this incident somewhere on my tombstone. If anyone has any ideas how this can be done then please PM me (except you Jab, i'd appreciate it if you didn't PM me )

I won't PM you, I respect your right.

My post was a general statement and not directed at you. I would have quoted your post or tagged you, like I have done in the past. Also, I supported you in saying the the law is stupid. See, we can get along just fine :)

................ I forgot to tell you guys... I got a fine for jay walking the other day.

I got one about three months ago, right on Exhibition and Little Bourke. Total load of shit. Vicpol really end up alienating the people who could be swayed to respect cops.

My mate Marko Draganovic spends a lot of time around cemeteries, I can get him to do it for you.

Not sure, infact pretty sure i've already done it since.

I don't see jay walking as a bad thing or an offense that needs to be reined in. So i can't relate to your excitement that fining me for jay walking will stop me from doing it.

The fact that you give a shit whether people jay walk tells me that you don't have much going on in your life.

Do you drive in the CBD?

What, by enforcing the law?

If you don't like the law then hate on the politicians who make them, not the police who enforce them.
And if you don't want to be fined for jaywalking then don't do it.

That's fine, just don't have a sook about it when you get fined again.

You started the thread...

What rubbish, as I said before, the government can't fine you for this if you don't actually do it, some people just seem to have the mentality where nothing is their own fault.
Like I said, suckers like you.

Why require a concession card at all? WA smart riders for students double as a concession card. You sign up for one through your university portal and it automatically ceases to charge discount fares once you stop.

Like I said, it's nothing more than a scam. Heck, again in WA there is no limit on the times that you can just scan your concession card, or take it into the TA and they waive the fine. Or at least there wasn't. Back in Melbourne it is a 208$ fine, smply for forgetting.

There is no justification for that, it is just another means of stealth revenue raising. The mindset of people who enter into apologism for it, would be funny if it wasn't so worryingly daft.

WA's SmartRider is so far ahead of Melbourne's system it isn't funny.

Would you believe that in Perth they even have this crazy system where if you just want to go on public transport as a one-off, you can just buy a ticket and get on, rather than finding a 7-11 to buy a card full of rides you'll never use!

Yeah, damn those law-abiding citizens who have at least a modicum of situational awareness to not cross at one of (if not) the intersection in the CBD that has the most accidents invovling a pedestrian while there are a number of uniformed Police Officers there.
The outrage!
As am I, a law abiding citizen, but at least I am aware enough to spot a con.

What about fines for forgetting your concession card, tell me why do you even need one, when they have it on record on the system that you have one?

Likewise I remember the fines they brought in for leaving your car unlocked in the CBD, fines and potential jail time for protesting, fines for swearing in front of a police officer and so on and so on. Fines fines fines for every little thing.

You started the thread...

No shit, and it's obviously topical given that it's had a fair bit of activity since starting, largely due to people like you who spent the weekend posting in this thread about how awesome it is that jay walkers are fined. Not much activity from the jay walkers over the weekend because, at a guess, they were out enjoying life.

Also, yes, i'm flabberghasted to receive a fine for jay walking but i'd hardly call that "sooking"

Same hardware/software backbone though, both redundant but at least theirs works.

I agree on the last part. 1.5 billion bucks on a shitty system that doesn't work properly, chronically overcharges and they can't even utilise it right (myki). Who knew WA would ever have it over Victoria on any thing like this, but it seems public works here have become an ongoing series of monumental **** ups for quite some time.

What about a $750 fine if you don't "move on" when told to at a protest

There you go storm troopers, something else to get 'hot' over.

I don't think it's awesome at all, I think it's pretty pissweak. Seems that's Melbourne for you though. (Fine for not locking your car? Is that for real?)

The pissweakedness is just outweighed by the amusement at someone have a big public cry over something so easily avoided.

Agree, it's a PR fail for vicpol.

So you are going to write that strongly worded letter to the HUN?

Like I said, suckers like you.

Having the sense not to break the law in front of a police officer hardly makes me a sucker.

A sucker is someone who can't spot the police equivalent of cheese on a mouse trap.

Clearly they should've implemented a similar system here, but that's a different argument.

But just because whoever implemented Myki made an oversight, doesn't make the $200 fine 'wrong'.

Shit law which is a completely different situation, and one which hopefully won't survive beyond the state election.

Here lies Nicky, mowed down by a car on Flinders St as she attempted to cross against the lights.

People, including you break that silly law every single day. I am as law abiding and safety first as they come, trickle down effect of spending a lot of time in a lab, yet even I probably inadvertently J-walk.

The 200$ fine is completely wrong, it serves no purpose at all. None. Just another sly revenue stream.

Should I report you?

It's the truth Fyfie, which is why it winds you up so bad. Cattle in the cattle pen. If you feel you need to managed your whole life and fined within an inch of it for every small transgression, then you are little better than a farm animal.

Do YOU drive in the CBD?

If they can access a database quickly to see if you are a concession card holder then I'd agree it's unfair - but can they? Given the issues with Myki thus far I wouldn't be confident in its accuracy. I'd completely agree it's excessive, but not unreasonable if the ability to check quickly doesn't actually exist.

Likewise I remember the fines they brought in for leaving your car unlocked in the CBD, fines and potential jail time for protesting, fines for swearing in front of a police officer and so on and so on. Fines fines fines for every little thing.
I'll simply say that some fines are reasonable, some are not.

Any curbing on the freedom of protest I am completely against, as with any fine for leaving your car door unlocked for example.

A comparitively small fine for not jaywalking at a busy intersection where I have personally seen a number of people hit (and I still don't know how one woman survived - it happened on Friday and I thought she was dead, yet there was no news report about it over the weekend) I don't have an issue with, especially considering if you don't notice a police officer should you be trusted to walk across a road through traffic?
I don't see the sense in holding a firm ideological stance either way - each instance on its merits.
