Our midfield was at ease clearing the ball, wherever we handpassed, there was someone there and someone running passed him to give it to a forward. It was beautiful to watch, it was a great shame we didn't get any help from the umpires, or we couldn't sustain it into the 4th quater.

while it was a great quarter of footy, our problem is the game goes for 4 quarters, not 1.

a very good quarter of footy none the less

Thats true, but I reckon we are getting improvement in this area. Every match we play, out 'token burst' that we have seems to go for a little longer, and we get a better result from it. I reckon we are not far away from it all just clicking, and playing 3 quarters of blistering football and taking the pedal off, or stating reasonably slowly before exploding for 3 or so quarters.

Can anyone remember Carlton playing a better quarter of footy than the 3rd quarter tonight in the last 5 years ?

probably not, no. thats the worst (and probably best) part about tonight! we really should have capitalised on the third quarter and drilled the bombers in to the ground! the old carlton sides would have done just that, the carlton sides of today don't know how!

Doesn't make losing easier.

We had WCE on toast in a better performance in Perth before losing at the death and we still haven't learnt to win.

Scotland and Houlihan need to be f*cked off pronto.

But everyone will blame Russell again.

Aside from going to sleep in the last few minutes, and costing us 2 goals.

Yeah i'd forgotten about that. That seems to be a real problem for us - we gave up goals in the dying minutes of the first quarter as well tonight i think. I'm sure the coaches are monitoring that though and that we'll work on it.

Scotland was horrid tonight, but we know he's a very good player (slow start to the year).

Houlihan is as much a target as Russel? (not to mention a significantly better player)

Russel has to go. Just not up to it, and there are those more deserving of a game than he is. I've been extremely patient with him, and yes he was decent last week, but he just not do enough - until he can demand a game in the 2nds, I'd keep him there because at the moment, his place in the side isn't justified.

We probably played just as good as we did when we kicked 9 in the 3rd against Port last year

It was great to see us win a quarter so convincingly, yes, but the third quarter means nothing unless it's followed up by a strong fourth quarter. We didn't have that last night, and that was the difference between us and Essendon.

Only one Essendon player ripped us apart and that was Lovett. When he got the ball he just ran and we didn't know what to do. We had NOBODY quick enough to even look like catching him.
We need to do what the Dons do and that is take the game on. Stop waiting and looking. Just kick it quickly forward even to a contest. Have faith in our players in front to win at least 50% of the one on ones. When we wait it's never one on one as the opposition get back whilst we are looking for someone free.

WHAT?!?!?!

Essendon didn't do that at all. The last person to order a team to just kick to a contest was Pagan and look were that got him and us.

Essendon beat us at our HF line. We were unable to lock the ball in and as a result they moved the ball out quicker than it went in and like lightning would enter their forward 50 thus not allowing our defenders time to organise.
