Carltons midfield may look good on paper but is full of piss-weak players, outside players. Murphy, Scotland, Stevens, Gibbs to name a few and we all know Judd isnt fit. Carlton has damaging players by foot but not many that can win the ball.
If we want to win, we have to show that we're there to play and win the hard ball. The carlton players i mentioned only get into the game when Carlton are getting the ball. Basically, we have to do what Geeling did last week. Be first to the ball and make sure our skill level is of a good standard

We need Stanton to grow a set and finish the game with a grand total of 1 hard ball get.

All he does is prance around the outside of the pack like a fairy waiting for the handball, or run past screaming for the cheap stat. This is all well and good if you are an outside player....but you have to hit your targets. I've been waiting two years for him to develop this part of his game and it hasn't happened. I've all but lost faith. I think he had 9 clangers against Geelong?

The day that guy wins a contested ball I'll....I dunno what I'll do.

Stanton will be no more than an average midfielder

If by kill it you mean 30 uncontested possessions then yeah you're right.

That's what he has been identified to do. You need runners, and he will be a leading one. His disposal around the ground is fine, in fact I'd say it's very good.

What our team needs is the ones identified as the in and under mids to bl00dy step up. Mcv and Watson, JJ if he's in - they need t get us first use, not 38th!

He had seven contested possessions against Geelong.

Obviously im exaggerating. And there's a difference between a contested possession on the stat sheet and a genuine hard ball get. Hes not someone who will put their body on the line if need be. I noticed once against Geelong (maybe Mooney) and against North with Nathan Thompson both forwards going for a contested mark with Stants closing quickly but failed to make a contest. Not because he couldnt get there in time, but because he wasn't 100% committed to the cause. It wouldnt stand out if you were just casually watching the footy, but I happened to notice it.

I understand he's a designated runner, but you have to be prepared to do the dirty work if its required. He'll be another Travis Johnstone at best.

When are people going to learn that their are inside players and outside players?

Stants is an outside player. He is important for our team, playing the role of the outside runner.

I understand this. As i already stated. However there are players who can do both. Great players. Your Voss', Simon Blacks, Abletts (any Geelong mid for that matter), Hodges. Stants is not and never will be one of those players, and we wont win a flag with him being our premier midfielder.

(Sorry to be a negative nancy. I hope he proves me wrong)

He is important, but what is more important is that you when you have to go, you go.

Stanton failed to do that last week.

When the game was there to be won, he failed to deliver the work rate that was required. Nearly his worst game for the club last week.

I disagree. Stanton was quite good early. He used the ball well apart from one bad mistake late in the quarter. He wasn't however as impressive later in the game. But that wasn't unusual, many members of the team dropped off once the game looked lost. Unfortunatly for us that was about the 5 miniute mark of the second quater, which meant that the boys played most of the game very flat and underwhelming. I defended Stants against North, though he was poor there, but I feel that he was worse against Geelong. Unlike Davey and Dyson and a couple of others he failed to put in 100% once the game was lost.

He will adjust and bounce back from this though because he is a quality player who wants to make it in the AFL. Because he's been a big part of our midfield over the last year and more people forget how young he is, and without senior players like Hird around sometimes lacks the support and direction on the field to keep him focused and at his best.

I expect him to have a good game this week. He is a hard runner and should find a lot of space against Carlton's midfield, especially on the MCG, and his delivery has been quite good so far this year; up on last year except for the mistakes against Geelong.

Exactly and unfortunately we have too many players in our team that don't go when they need to, one is returning this week.

Stanton has played the 2 worst games i can remember seeing him ever play, so far this year but i do believe he will get back to playing good football.

He needs to be prepared to committ himself to actually tackle, shepherd and bump when required and atm he is not worthy to wear the number 5, hence why it should have been put away until someone earned the right.

I actually don't have a problem with his Round 1 game.

He took Rawlings away from the play, it looked to me like he ignored his own game for the sake of the team and played to instructions. He didn't figure in the rotations nearly as much as he normally would and ran up and down the ground to burn Rawlings and create space for others. Not his normal game but was an important role because it meant that while we were on top they were effectively a midfielder down.

Last week though, he was kick chasing.
Normally he finds space by gut running and getting to dangerous positions. He burns his opponent. Last week he ran to soft positions far too often.

The number 5 thing is a non-issue for mine. It's just a number.
He needs to get the burst running back into his game, I've got no doubt we'll see an improvement this week.

i think our on ball department needs some serious development... we're always worrying about shutting down other sides.. we should have a midfield worried about shutting us down!... that said i think our tagging isn't up to scratch... peveril isnt cutting it and slattery doesn't look to have the engine... i wonder if it's worth a shot trying to get troy selwood home at the end of the year... he has a massive engine and can tag well.. still young and lethal's not playing him up there...

Have you watched our last two games?
It's evident that we're trying to do that.

We ran one tag last week (Ablett) and a defensive run with the week before (Harvey).

The rest was head to head and attacking footy.

and slattery doesn't look to have the engine...

He does have the engine, he got towelled up by Ablett. It's the first time he's had his pants pulled down by a midfielder. Ablett is the best in the business.

ha. we're trying to do it - but do you reckon they're worried about trying to shut us down? the result was we ran off them and they just towelled us up.. we still need good taggers who can win the ball themself and hard inside players..

it seems once slattery is beaten he might struggle to get back on top... no heart.

Do you want us to try and develop it?
Or just click our fingers and have it happen?

We've introduced a new style, new players and a new system.
It's going to take time, players need to develop their game.

We played the best midfield in the comp, we took them on and failed.
But we did exactly what you want us to do.

We've put a process in place and it's going to take time before we see the rewards. We're developing and because of that we're going to see games of midfield dominance like against the Roos and games we we're smashed like Geelong. It's all part of the the development process.

You can accuse Slattery of a lot of things, but no heart isn't one of them.

Strange comment.

I agree with you longy, it seems a strange comment - but its all opinion based and your opinion on Stants I greatly disagree with....doesn't mean you're right, or me for that matter....

You're right, it is an opinion.

But it's a badly informed one.

And don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Stants. Just thought he let us down last week.

On the money Longy. Stants was lining up at half forward or half back a lot of the time and it was noticable that he was not in the center square set up all that much.

He was better than a lot of the senior players.

He has had a very specific, and limited intro to season 2008 and i expect him to slowly get better and be raring and firing by Rd 5 or so.

He was serviceable last week. Others were shocking. Endevour, skills, output - any way you look at it.
