Review Once-off Game Analysis: Requests Wanted

Hi all,

I don't mind doing a bit of my own analysis every now and then, whether it be umpiring, doing my own stats or measuring a player's impact on a game or whatnot.

I thought about doing one on the West Coast game because the opposition pressure was so immense and I fully expect the rest of the season to be at a similar level of intensity compared to the first half of the season... basically, the longer a season goes on, the harder it becomes and even the shit teams get better... generally. This is why it's easier to win games earlier in the season. So I want to get a feel for making the unknown "known", with the angle of finding out what our boys can do better for the rest of the year, beyond the general themes of "chase harder" or "use the ball better" etc.

Anyway, I've got a couple of ideas that I want to test through a full-game analysis but I want your ideas too. It's my way of giving back to the EFC board :p

So, let me know what you want to know and I'll try as best as I can to review the game and measure it, then publish my findings and leave it open for your interpretation of the results. It's a good way to quantify things that are either counted by Champion Data and not available to us or not counted at all (as far as we know).

Some of my ideas are:

- opposition effective disposal % with no direct perceived pressure vs. effective disposal % with direct perceived pressure. If you like this idea, tell me how you think perceived pressure is created, e.g. moving towards your opponent within 5 metres before they dispose of the ball

- measuring rollover defense on an individual level by looking at which players are more likely to leave their man to close in on an opposition player. E.g. we know players like Hooker and Hocking do this well whereas in my view Heppell is a shocker for it (as much as I love him)

- measuring the same by counting the average number of times in a defensive chain (i.e. when the opposition is moving the ball up the field) the next player rolls up before the chain is broken and the opposition finds a loose player. This might be hard to understand, but basically I want to measure compliance to rollover defense, or more simply compliance on a team and individual level to placement in a zone. Questions I want to answer are "how's our compliance at the beginning of the game vs. in the last quarter" or "which players break ranks by doing something positive or negative first. I.e. who are our defensive leaders who are able to change our defensive momentum?"

- on the attack, qualitatively measuring in categories the types of ball movement decisions. E.g. who moves the ball forwards to the first option, forwards to a long option, sideways, backwards, by hand or by foot, under what pressure etc to try to find a way to evaluate actual value towards an eventual goal opportunity. One game will be a relatively small sample size so if you like this idea, try to help me come up with a way of evaluating what a "very good disposal" is vs. what an effective but pointless disposal is.

These are just some of my ideas and before I jump into it, I want your ideas. This can be what you want to know holistically or at a granular level and what kind of metrics you want measured. Do you want me to try to categorise goal-opportunity creation in disposals chains? How do you want the results to look?

Basically I have a bit of annual leave and the wife is away on work, so I have some spare time to do this sort of thing as a once-off. I'm happy to spend around 6 hours on it (watching, reviewing, counting, tabling results, then interpretations and publication etc). So... I'll end up just choosing one area of focus to make it manageable.

I'm going to start tomorrow so if you want to see something, get in, otherwise I'll just pick my own :)

I'll aim to publish the results early next week while the result of this game is still fresh and relevant in our minds.

Cheers,
Mumbo

Edit: a heads-up for opposition supporters, no drugs jokes please.

I am interested in how many times our half backs run through the guts in an attacking foray. That is running offensively between the two lines that comprise the centre square. This is something that Dempsey does effectively.

I can do that and if I did, I'd be interested in categorising the types of disposals under varying degrees of pressure to try to get some meaning out of it.
