One dimensional midfield.

Was just thinking about this, but how One Dimensional is our midfield. Stanton, Watson, Peverill, Heffernan, JJ, Winderlich and Dyson are only midfielders. They can not really play any other position. Compare that to other midfields who have players that can be pushed either forward or back to have a rest instead of going to the bench.

The problem with this is that guys like McVeigh (to a lesser extent), Lovett, Monfries, Slattery and Welsh cant get a run in the midfield because they are needed in other spots around the ground. I know I've been a fan of Pev, and especially Heffernan in other threads, but it might be beneficial for the team to drop at least Heffernan and give guys like Monfries and Lovett more of a go in the midfield. From What ive seen, Lonergan is someone who can play in different positions, so maybe he can have a go.

Stanton, Watson, Winderlich and Dyson should be taught ATLEAST how to sit in the forward line and make a lead, or to take up space as a free man in the D50. Midfield rotation should be around to different spots on the ground, not to and from the bench. This is where we can improve dramatically IMO.

I can see your point. Peverill can't play anywhere else. But I think Winderlich is uited to a back flank for the time being and Stanton playing in the backline at certain stages. They both played there the first two rounds and provided fantatstic rebound out of defense.

Monfries and Lovett should be playing at least half a game each in the midfield. Sheedy did it with Caracella and Blumfield for years.

Yeh Monfries is underdone. A great talent. Needs to be used more up the ground where he is more effective with his good disposal.

So you are saying that becasue Watson hasnt been used forward in the seniors he cant play there ? This is despite the fact that he played pretty much all of 2005 for Bendigo as a forward including a final where he kicked 5.
JJ had been used as a small forward in the past and has been effective at it.
Heff used to be ok up forward but seems to have lost that part of his game.
Winderlich has played forward in the VFL.
Lovett has been playing in the midfield/wing and resting on the bench.
Slattery has had a couple of midfield roles as a tagger.

Not sure who you are watching that sends players back for a rest. Most of the resting i have seen in the AFL is being done on the bench. Not sure why you need Stants and Pev in the forward line anyway. These two being our best distance runners go to the bench for a rest not run around all day. The small forwards need to be pushing up and providing pressure anyway so im not sure how you give them a rest.
Sorry dont follow your reasoning at all.

Ant, I'm not saying that players should not get benched. But for an example, take Andrew Embley. He plays both midfield and forward, and is effective at both.

All the guys that you have said that played forwrd in the VFL would not be able to play as a leading forward at AFL level.

What i'm trying to say is that the midfielders need more strings to their bow, so some others like Monfries can be used more in the midfield. The reason he isnt used there at the moment is because there usnt really someone who can take his spot in the forward line. If someone like Winders or Watson can go up forward and provide a target, Monfries can get more time on the ball, which would benefit the team IMO.

But Watson can be used there he just hasnt been. Even though it is the VFL , VFL finals are a pretty good guide and he was used as a leading CHF and kicked 5 goals. Also kicked had a few games where he kicked 2 and 3 from the flank.
Jason Johnson has been used there effectively.
Im sure Winderlich could be as well. They have done some training drills (match sim )this year with him as a deep leading forward.

Im not sure why you are saying the players you mentioned cant be used in that role when they havnt been tried in it.
Why cant guys who play as leading forwards in the VFL do it at AFL level. If you go by that theory then there is no position played in the VFL that could be used in the AFL.
The Eagles us some of their mids forward becasue they havent got two genuine 60 plus goal forwards so they have to get goals from somwhere.
Monfries can go into the middle whenever they need him to. You simply send Lovett forward for a bit as he can and is used as a marking target up forward.
You use Andrew Welsh as a half forward or NLM (we did this angainst the Crows) .Monfries hasnt had much of a run in the middle becasue he didnt do much in there in the first two games.

In my opinion Heff should be a half back flank with McPhee if he is actually named to release Slatts to midfield. I see Slattery as our #1 tagger..

ps. idont think Heff is best 22. Only one of Pev,Heff,Campo in the one team. Pev is best 22 atm..

I agree with Ant on this one, they me be used in the one dimension but that doesn't make them one-dimensional, Scotty Lucas has spent 99% of the year forward does that mean he's one dimensional? No he almost won AA selection at CHB:thumbsu: The players can only do what the coach asks them to do on the day, if JJ or Watson start running forward and telling Davey and Monfries to move into the middle what do you think Sheedy would say?

People are making too much of Wednesday. The midfield was awful but it was backing up after 4 days and without our most accomplished midfielder (JJ), perhaps our most inform runner and best user (Winderlich) and our no.1 ruckman (Hille).

Exactly!

Wasnt just talking about Wednesday, I was talking in general.

And if they aren't used in the capacity, then obviously it isnt their fault. Lets just say I would like to see some of the midfielders add an extra string to their bow, and let them use it.

Plus Laycock had to carry the ruck after carrying it just 4 days ago, even though he is not used to it or fit enough. Stanton and Peverill also didn't look as sharp after working very hard 4 days earlier.

Well, Peverill and Winderlich both had a number of easy shots on the run in the first quarter against Carlton and missed. Looks like they can easily get into position to be goal kickers, but they might be a bit gun shy.
