Just flicked on the tele and it one of those good timing things, thought I'd take some notes if anyone's interested...
'87 Pre-lim: Doesn't blame Jim - missed an easy shot himself first 1/4 which amongst many factors would have changed the game. Reckon's the siren went before the Jimmy infringement but wasn't heard due to the crowd.
Saddened, not bitter about not being there for the 88 GF.
Always rocked up to any game, preparing to win and expecting to win. (can't make that stand out anymore)
Dreamt of playing for Melbourne from 6yrs old.
Only had an U/19's pass, so had to buy his way into the ground for his senior debut. In awe to be playing along side his heroes. He knew all of them, they didn't know him.
#4 John Lord on his back as a kid.
Relationship with Barassi:
Good. Said he turned the club from an amateur organisaiton within the MCC, to a professional club. Tought to train on both sides (back to basic skills practice), prepared for games, time management in and out of football which was new. Fantastic but harsh. Enourmous expectation of success. Very harsh if you didn't do what he expected you to do.
Flower loved the wing. Tactical position and loved having to decide whether to attack or defend, using his brian.
Barassi put him the HBF to turn the tagged into the tagger. Attacking HBFer. 3rd in the Brownlow in '83, when it was made.
On FB with Malcolm Blight - Krakeour bro's hit him on the tit 3 times with Blight kicking 3 in 3 minutes and never played FB again.
73-75kg's in the his last 5 years of footy. Shit Facilities at MCG. "Gym" was a 4 way rotational piece of equipment and some heavy weights. But he wasn't into weights much.
Awareness was a huge strength that kept him out of trouble.
Fav memory - Whitten Oval to make the finals in '87. Potential to be worst game ever to miss finals in last game of footy. Was angry at half time, not feeling like he was contributing, went on to kick crucial 2nd half goals. 3/4 time wanted to know Geelong result - got told Geelong were being thumped. Thought the game was over in reaction to the crowd reaction to Dunstall putting the Hawks in front. Lyon did his leg that game.
No resentment to only 1 B&F. Justified by only playing 1 year of 22 games and other good players in the side, who were also good team players. No qualms finishing behind quality players.
Facilities always held MFC back and affected finals chances before Barassi injected professionalism.
Carl Dittirich improved MFC's chances of winning, spurred others on.
Finished runner up in 2 Brownlows, thought he was lucky to get votes in some games and didn't feel dudded. (very modest man)
Coaches gave him the freedom to attack and kick goals. Loved kicking goals and achieving the team objective in doing so.
Playing amongst hero's at State of Origin. Humbled. Just need to make good position and read the play to get touches. Made great friends with many origin players e.g. Burnie Quinlan - still play golf together.
Ongoing battle with Schimmelbush. Tough, rugged, skilled, any time of game whatever the scorelin-lots of admiration for him.
Gerrad Healey - Flower wasn't happy he left in ~86 to Sydney 'looking for success' when Flower thought we were on the cusp. Then went on to knock out Sydney in the finals and quietly enjoyed that. But a great footballer.
Mark Jackson - altercation during an intra club. Playing on Jacko. Giving him a bath out at Scotch College playing grounds and Jacko' clocked him and the whole side took on Jacko. Jacko responded to Barassi "I'm practicing how I play".
Illness - naive and didn't think of any illness. Mike Sheean promoting prostate cancer encouraged to get a test. Went in for colesterol and got his prostate tested. Cancer found. Options - take it out or treat it? Took it out to watch his kids grow up.
Current passion - a love for footy, but not to need to be at every MFC game. Loves watching his kids play and enjoys other things outside football now that it is not so central to his life.
Good interview, great man. Watching the footage was the best. Like probably many here, I never saw Flower play but Dad's always said he's the best Demon he's seen play.
