From what I understand, national cricketers get paid more than AFL players. Which makes sense because only a couple of dozen cricketers are offered national contracts each year so they are harder to get, versus 800 AFL footballers.
Mitch Marsh had the exact decision since he would have been a top pick in the draft. Reckoned he would play for the national team at which point it is a no brainer. iirc one year Brett Lee made more money being the designated 12th man than the highest paid AFL footballer. Before IPL.
