I think Sheehan is good enough to get a worthwhile interview out of him.

I'm just interested in what makes a guy like that tick. He was doubtlessly talented (308 goals in just 82 games, still holds the record for most games from debut with at least one goal, with 79), and was clearly a strong character, but wasn't the kind of wayward bloke who couldn't tie their own shoes outside of footy (parlayed his personality into a number of minor television and film roles, including a regular gig on the Sunday Footy Show once upon a time), so I'd just like to see Sheehan explore more the reasons why he didn't realise his full potential (or at least have some more longevity - out of the game at age 26) or didn't really find a home (spent time at four clubs - Richmond, Melbourne, St Kilda, Geelong) as a footballer.
Jacko also had 2 stints for South Fremantle in the WAFL under Mal Brown (79) & Stan Magro (87) before & after his time in the VFL & there was plenty of good stories from those years as well!

I thought Hart was terrific. Not prepared to put his career or his capabilities down. I don't have a problem with someone who is proud of their achivements. And I have still never seen a better CHF.
Douchebag????

I agree apart from the best CHF seen. He was the best I saw until Wayne Carey. Great player.

Used to hearing so many champions of the game being humble or showing modesty. FIGJAM attitude, didn't appeal to me.

Jacko was interviewed on SEN recently, it was illuminating, not sure if it's still available on the Podcast but it was very funny and informative. Jacko is portrayed as a Clown Prince but his stats were pretty impressive, four goals a game as a Full Forward in a strong era. He made plenty of mistakes but he's not the fool everyone thinks.

Ask yourself this question, Is it any surprise Royce didn't make it as a coach?

Happens regularly.

Grant Thomas said it last year of Barry Cable that he would get frustrated as a coach when players couldn't do the things that came second nature to him.

I'd be disappointed if the likes of Carey (as an example) didn't show the same candor. They were good, they knew they were good, we knew they knew they were good, let's just drop the bullshit.

It also gave a lot of weight to Hart's comments about other players, such as Bruce Doull.

If the CHF of the team of the century cant be a little confident then no one can.........

His back must be pretty bad cause i thought he looked pretty uncomfortable sitting there having to talk. Wouldn't look to much into his failure as a coach when the club he coached only has one flag.

Why not interview Ben Graham who played in a NFL Grand-Final?
Would be riveting.

I'm pretty sure that Jackson said that he only used footy as a vehicle to elevate his profile so that he could do other things.

Peter Schwab is next cab off the rank.
I was at a NSW - Vic shield game a few years back and went to the toilet and in walked Schwabby, I said 'Schwabby what are you doing here' and he said he was working upstairs or something, that's my Peter Schwab story.

Not sure what Mike's stance is on the NFL, but he's been more than vocal on his dislike of soccer. Methinks his knowledge is limited to Aussie Rules and is scornful of all else.

I never liked David Schwarz. In 1998 he visited my school, and I was horrified by the level of arrogance and apathy on display. I remember saying to my mates something like "why's he here if he's not going to inspire kids, be enthusiastic, or even engage with us as aspiring, or wannabe footballers?"

He won't care - in fact, it's only relevant to me. But after watching Open Mike tonight, I've forgiven him. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't an all-harbouring grudge. It was just "man that guys a douchebag" every time I saw him on tv or heard him on radio.

As someone who has battled my own demons - although nothing that severe as his - it all makes sense to me now, and I do a complete 180 degree turn on it. I think of how hard it must've been to be doing PR activities like this, and I wonder how Melbourne a) never did anything to help him, and b) sent him on these clinics when he was likely to be a particularly prickly character most days.

I loved this Open Mike, because maybe it will have helped some people on the precipice of addiction - any addiction - to have an epiphany.

I dunno - people will have differing opinions on this. Smoking addiction is expensive, harmful to health, and probably affects a lot of families. Alcohol addiction is very expensive, harmful to health, and absolutely affects a lot of families and their welfare.

But to me, gambling addiction probably sits just below serious drug addiction as the worst. Because it is all-encompassing in terms of expense - you will bet everything you have, and then some. And it will absolutely ruin your family because with addiction (as Schwarz said) families so rarely see the "sickness" element of it and many see it as the addict seeking their thrills and deciding that the punt is more important than their family. And it will devastate your mental health.

Honestly I don't think anyone really saw gambling addiction as much of an issue at the time. Anyone who got in debt would just be seen as a dickhead who screwed themselves rather than someone with a serious psychological condition. I think the point David made about how he just filled the addiction with something else every time was the most important part "First it was smoking, then coffee, now I'm finally on green tea" or something along those lines.

I would love to see Mike interview Peter Motley.
There's a story of heart-break and then the long climb back to some what of a normal life.

Mots, could have been top 10 of all time until the car crash.

Watched the Royce Hart Open Mike and again it was a ripper. Looking forward to the Peter Schwab interview.

Can anyone shed any light on the supposed rift between Hart and Sheedy?

Hart flatly denied there was any problem between them, but I'm not 100% sure he was telling the truth.

Sheahan seemed to know something, but he let it go.

Does anyone know the story?

Thrilling
A bloke who plays at the highest level in Australia, leaves to go to a whole new sport in the US, does welle nough to play in a loosing Superbowl and has returned to AFL to coach.
I'd like to know the facts between.

You have one player, very gifted dare I say it a tad conceited, not a team player so to speak but the team instruction is kick it to he. In the same team are a group of hard working, mere mortals doing everything for the team.

I'm pretty sure it goes back to Royce's perception of how crucial he was as opposed to the remaining 10 players. Rex Hunt has a similar view.

Yeah, anyone can draw that conclusion, but I was hoping for something more specific that that.

I read a story in one of Sheedy's books where he claimed to have punched a "big-headed" teammate in the rooms after a game. A little kid's autograph book was passed around for everyone to sign. When Sheedy saw the other guy had scrawled "F**k off" as a joke instead of signing their name, he went apeshit. For some reason I thought it may have been Billy Barrot, but maybe it was Royce Hart.
