Peter landy

A mate and I went to a night match Nth v Coll, I think it was Mckernan's first game or one of, from memory. He kicked 5. Looked a world beater. He turned from a champ to a gimp. Veru strange, obviously not the most mentally strong footballer to ever play!

Was kinda hoping Mike would touch on Corey having a much younger brother also playing AFL now and his thoughts on it. Ah well. I certainly understand why Shaun Mckernan has been so mentally fragile throughout his time with us though.

Unfortunately I don't remember Mckernan in his prime. I remember him being booed by his own supporters at Optus Oval playing for the blues.

Seems like he was a weird player. Very good and very bad.

And he's still go that ****ing thing on his face although it looks a lot bigger these days.

Most on that list I've got zero interest in hearing about. Knights yes, maybe Simon Madden, Landy would probably be the best. He came from a weird era where the commentators didn't try to be the stars. Astounding.

Gary Ayres would be insufferable.

Mike's line of questions would be on his coaching career and whether or not he was "hard done by" in getting sacked from Geelong and Adelaide.

Would probably ask him why he hasn't been hired as an AFL coach again.

Yep, would love Peter Landy. A professional broadcaster who called the game, nothing more.

Mike Sheahan's voice sounds like a powerless jackhammer in that episode. That's not a good thing.

Seriously... Did Mike Sheehan **** your pets or something?

I'm just trying to understand the irrational intolerance you have of anything/everything he does.

The guy could cure cancer and you'd still be bagging him for no reason.

I actually admire and like the bloke, funnily enough.

I just don't think that he should be hosting television shows. For one, he's a terrible interviewer and secondly, his personality doesn't suit it. Thirdly, he's completely ignorant and dismissive of anything which happened outside of Victoria.

He's a fantastic writer, and I like his On the Couch work. Open Mike, however, is a disappointment.

It's like a rock band... some guys are better as sidemen and shouldn't front their own bands. That's all it is.

Might I also add that the hour-long versions of Open Mike are far superior to the half-hour versions. Mike isn't as much of a hindrance in those episodes, and it allows for questions other than those which centre on controversy or shenanigans. These are great footballers on his show, I want to know about their football career, not their nightlife. The hour-long shows (which haven't happened this year) allow for more of that talk.

Haha, fair enough.

Completely disagree with the first two points. I think a big part of what makes the show great is that the majority of people on Open Mike really seem to respect Sheehan.

Who would you suggest that would do a better job? And it needs to be somebody in the AFL scene.

Bruce? Now THAT would be terrible. ;)

As for your last point, I don't disagree... but it doesn't really bother me either. This is the AFL... which, after all, is an extension of the VFL...

... like it or not.

Disagree. However, your next comment is quite amusing:

It seems as though you should be directing your criticism towards the Fox editors, not Sheehan!

I mean, you bag Sheehan constantly... and then claim that the longer interviews are better.

You have heard of editing... haven't you?

To be fair, a lot of the people on the show are Mike's mates. One watch of the Beasley interview and you could tell that the only reason he was on the show is that he's one of Mike's golfing buddies. I know that's a double-edged sword... you probably wouldn't have had Akermanis divulging the stuff he did with someone else (but then again, for the right price... Aker would do anything).

On the interstate stuff... it just makes the interviews frustrating. You had the Phil Carman interview, and in between the 20 minutes about his suspensions, Phil said the cross to Victoria wasn't that much of a drama because the football was just as good in SA as it was in VIC. A good interviewer would've asked about that, and maybe said something along the lines of "do you think that was for everyone, or just for the very best players like yourself or Malcolm Blight?"... whereas Mike gave a dismissive (and rather condescending) "really?" and then moved on.

The very best interviewers talk to their subjects and coax information out of them that they wouldn't normally talk about. Mike's tactic is "tell me about what happened the night after you played Hawthorn at Princes Park in 1984". "My understanding at the time was..." etc. It's interviewing, but it's not good interviewing, if you get my drift.

As for who would do a better job? I honestly don't know. But just because I can't think of someone doesn't mean that Mike's the best man for the job!

Editing? Never heard of it :)

The longer interviews are much better because they talk about the football side of things, not the gossip trash which Mike seems to ask about.

If he didn't ask that shit then the half hour versions would be much better and my criticisms wouldn't be so frequent.

As I said, I actually like Mike and would kill for the career he's had. I just don't think his strong suit is hosting Open Mike, and if I seem to be riding his back all the time, it's because I watch his show every week and get frustrated frequently with where the interview went, as opposed to where it could have and should have gone.

Knights was good, nice guy, not bitter despite being shafted on more than one occasion.

even after watching cappers comments he still spoke well about him too.

enjoyed that interview, great bloke.

I hate the hawks but its interesting to hear from guys from their super era especially under Kennedy and who knew Peter Crimmins.

whos next?

due for a younger one again, maybe a Darren Jarman or something.

Have we seen any current players this year I dont recall any.
