What I will say is, that having seen a lot of Ablett Snr., Dunstall and Lockett play, I have always said Lockett and Ablett were better. However something john Kennedy Jr., said at the hawthorn hall of fame event. I forget the words now but it was along the lines of that dunstall covered all the bases including having a defensive aspect to his game, which the other two didn't have. It actually made me think for a bit because Kennedy was spot on with his words. I guess thats a tick against Ablett Sr., his defensive pressure.

A tad unfair on Ricky McLean. Agreed McLean never realised his true potential but 50 odd games, a GF and to be involved with THE two most powerful clubs of his era, under Barassi & Hafey, he still achieved a lot more than most of us & has enough stories to fill 30 minutes on OM.

That's the beauty of Open Mike, it occasionally comes up with one out of kept field like a McLean or an Alan Stoneham, who wasn't a premiership star but has a story or two that makes it interesting.

One that played fewer games than McLean but would make for compulsory viewing would be Fred Cook.

It's probably not as clear cut as simply moving him on. They somewhat reluctantly cleared him to Myrtleford for 1983 with the proviso that they have first option should he wish to return to the VFL. And that was with a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm hanging over him from a possibly drug-related incident at the end of 1982, after a season with a few less serious police incidents. Then when 1984 came & he'd escaped jail, Hawthorn reclaimed their right to him when he decided to return to the VFL at Geelong, but he was adamant he didn't want to go back to Hawthorn. Geelong paid the Hawks a transfer fee & he started his career as a Cat. I think if he wanted to continue to play for the Hawks he could have, but who knows how long that would have lasted.

And of course, Hawthorn via John Lauritz offered him a large contract for 1988 & beyond for up to 5 years, which Gary accepted, before changing his mind, as he was prone to doing. Mike Sheahan wrote an article on it at the end of 1989 with Lauritz confirming the negotiations.

So basically they didn't really want to let him go when he first left, and then they wanted him back a couple of times.

As I mentioned to another poster that's more a hindsight thing. It's one you hear used to denigrate Plugger also - 'too individual' etc. an argument which fails to respect the other clubs of the era that won flags, and also fails to objectively assess the quality & circumstances of teams Ablett & Lockett played in. Hawthorn didn't really want to let Ablett go, and then in fact offered him a large contract prior to 1988 to get him back.

The line you used about argument's failing to objectively assess the quality and circumstances of teams Ablett and Lockett played in. That for me is the one argument that shows in particular that Lockett was a better full forward than Dunstall, St.Kilda or Sydney never had the quality of the great hawthorn teams yet Lockett kicked more goals than Dunstall. Of subject a tad, I know.

How about Peter Wilson. I want to hear about him giving Langdon the chicken strut at the MCG and then the following year, or year after, joining West Coast and being a team mate to Langdon.

So after stating that Kennedy had won 4 flags, averaged a goal a game, and was top 15 at the Hawks for games played, Mike then proceeds to ask him:

"Was there a period of your life when you wished you were someone else?"

Not your best effort there Mike.

He was talking about the John Kennedy name and the burden/pressure/expectation the name carried.

After interviewing a thug has-been last week, it was interesting to see Mike interview an actual footballer again.
