Does anyone work in one?

Is there, or should there be an etiquette on phone calls?

This older man (a bit deaf i think) holds all of his meetings at his desk near me via conference.

He gets mad too sometimes and will bang his fist and sigh. It's sometimes a bit funny but if you're a bit tired or hung over it can be quite distracting and annoying.

I think it's rude to hold your conf calls at your desk in an open plan office when there is the option of going to meeting room with your laptop. I mean 1 a day is ok but he has back to back conf calls all day.

A few weeks ago he put a block of chocolate in front of me and when i looked at him he was "open mouth" chewing chocolate saying "do you want some"? I just looked away and shook my head, but he kept persisting. This was annoying as it forced me to look at the grosse spetacle of him talking with a block of half melted chocolate in his mouth.

Today he chomped on a sandwich and although i couldn't see him i could hear him explain (with a mouth full of food) the entire contents of his sandwich to another collegue then proceed to tell him the other type of sandwiches the cafe make. The sound was grosse.

He's been on my radar for about a week and a half now.

Anyway, this could belong in crap stories thread.

If I had to make up a moral it would be that sometimes open plan offices are fun and other times they are annoying.

Open plan offices piss me off, but unfortunately that's all I've worked in so far.

Rather than annoying co-workers, the thing that annoys me most is the total lack of privacy. If I need to do some personal stuff online such as banking or shopping, I can't do it without the perception that I don't take my job seriously. All while people waste far more time with idle gossip, lunch and smoko breaks etc.

Phone calls are another issue. I personally can't make phone calls at my desk unless they are purely business and even then, I like to keep them short and sharp. I just don't feel comfortable having a conversation with one other person while I'm in earshot of about 20 others.

I am in the same boat. Often if I have a morning tea break I will use that time to browse the net for 10-15 mins and some people look at you like you have spent the whole day doing nothing.:p

I try to be considerate to all those around me as much as I can. Probably my worst habit is I do swear from time to time which is not looked upon all that favorably.

I have no issue everyone in the office needs to make phonecalls and whatnot. Just annoying that certain people do so at a volume the whole office can hear and the same goes for certain people and the private conversations they have. I could not give a fk about how your kid is doing at school so why not inform the other person in a more private setting than doing so next to my desk.

Update: the guy who sits opposite me and next to the old loud dude has been told to move locations because loud man needs that desk for a consultant starting on his project on monday.

Lol, this guy is really pissing me off because i love the guy sitting opposite me, he's a breath of fresh air in an otherwise conservative office. We have little chat time outs throughout the day which usually result in me peeshing myself laughing.

JESUS!!!!!!

I was on a call the other day and half the floor came over to sing happy birthday to the guy I sit next to.

I actually put the call on hold and told them to shut the **** up.

I don't see myself in this job for long, such an unprofessional workplace.

yeah that is pretty bad. My work would never in a billion years do that. It's one of the most unsociable places i've worked.

That reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine cracks the shits with all the celebrations at work.

"Get well, get well soon, we want you to get well!"

Haha, you must be a delight to work with.

It was an important call and I couldn't hear a word of what was being said because of the sheer stupidity going on around me.

Next time I will just inform the client that there are more pressing matters to attend to and terminate the call because the gay dude in my office is having a birthday today.

Good point. Why do the office gays take their birthday so seriously?

That's one way of looking at it but I am more easy going than most people, even when hung over I'm a few ball parks more tolerant than the average person.

Fact is, this guy is extremely loud. I usually block him out because i'm concentrating on work. Sometimes this is too difficult.

This morning he was having an outrageous coughing fit and the girl near me was shooting daggers at him. I had an appointment and as i walked out she looked at me to share a "wtf", i giggled and continued out.

He's annoying.

Work hard, get the coffee when you are told too and pretty soon you will get an office all to yourself.

Can't remember the last time I didn't have my own office

That's because you collect the doll from your toilet.

Most professionals, when working for a corporation, work in an open plan office.

when i was in an open plan office this bitch started to try show me an astronomy video n played me a song.

i had to quit

i've thought about another thing he does and decided it too annoys me.

He says "shall we go out for drinky poohs" when he's on the phone to his wife...
ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

Im with you on this one... In the job I just quit the lady who I shared an office with would go through this inane baby talking drivel with her husband or really loud conversation with anyone, then the one time I say something to myself trying to figure something out she shhhhs me. I wasnt even mad I was so baffled at the situation I chuckled and had an early lunch.

Get off your pedestal you sanctimonious tosser. The vast majority of workplaces these days are open plan.

The last two organisations I have worked for have been fairly prominent and the only people that had their own office were the CEO and Company Secretary.

General Managers, and professionals with 15+ years experience and on considerable salaries were out in the "bullpen" with everyone else.

I generally booked a meeting room for teleconferences or important phonecalls that I expected to take some time. If it was personal I'd go somewhere quiet and use my mobile.

As someone said, in an open plan office calls are best if they're business related and short.

What about masturbating?

What's the consensus there?

lol i know, it just shows his complete ignorance and lends me to believe he's on benefits.

I work on a floor with GMs, Program Directors who are on $300k +. Not that money is everything but it highlights the fact that there isn't a stigma to working in an open plan office.
