We need to start using a 4 man forward line and clear everyone else out of the forward 50, Why?

- Fevola is a leading forward so logic tells me that if we open up the forward 50 so he has space to lead into he will kick more goals

- Setanta showed friday night he can take a good contested mark and could be very useful in the goal square.

- Betts is a very handy crumber deep in the forward 50 and Garlett/Yarran means we should be able to field 2 crumbing forwards rotating the 2 based on form.

----

The way I would like to see us operate is these 4 all starting in the goal square. Fevola can lead out into an open forward 50, Irish can stand in the square and take a contested mark or 2 and Betts and Garlett can sit at Irish's feet and pounce on the loose ball going over fev's head on the lead.

The HFF's would start on the wing to free up the forward 50 basically creating an empty space between the centre and the goal square devoid of carlton players.

People on here often complain how soft Hoops and Stevens are, these two players would be my pick for both HFF rolls, Why?

Their opponents are either going to follow them to the wing or sit back infront of Fevola, either way this can be exploited in our favour:

- If they go man on man they will have to use Setanta's Opponent to 2v1 Fevola allowing us to use him which even if he doesn't take many marks Betts and Garlett/Yarran will kick enough goals at his feet.

- If they do sit infront of Fevola this creates 2v1 situations on both wings in our favour and with this number advantage we can run the ball forward, their direct opponents will have to come at them opening the forward 50 for fevola again or the players like stevens and hoops will slot easy goals from 40-50m out on the run.

Hoops and Stevens are abused for not having a defensive side to their game so playing them in this role would mean they only have to man up when our opponents come up the ground with them.

---------------------------------------------------------

The other part of this forward setup would be that only these 4 players are allowed inside the forward 40m besides the ruckman and 3 midfielders at ball ups / throw ins.

I say this because we often find these players creeping forward which results in a congested forward line stopping us kicking goals and allowing our opponents to blast the ball out of defense to a 50:50 situation and an open forward line up the other end = easy goals.

In effect this would create a wall about 50-70 out from our goal consisting of 2 Wingmen, 2 HFF, 3 On Ballers and the ruckman which would force opposition sides to hold the ball up allowing us to get more numbers back and stopping us getting murdered by quick rebounds like friday night.

If our forward 50 pressure is good it would also cause them to panic and kick long straight into these waiting players arms ready to be sent straight back into our forward 50.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Having said that this would be how I would imagine our side would look.

FF: Betts Setanta Garlett/Yarran
HF: --v-- Fevola --v--
C: Simpson Hoops | Joseph | Gibbs Stevens
HB: Scotland Thornton Austin
FB: Carazzo Jammo Browne
R: Kruezer Judd Murphy
Int: Hampson Grigg Armfield (Someone im missing who played last week )
Emg: Fisher Russel Bannister

Injuries would mean the following swaps:
Bower - Austin
Waite - Armfield
Warnock - Either Irish or Hampson depending on the form of all 3.
Walker - Whoever im forgetting on the bench unless im missing someone obvious from the side

We have the option to throw Kruezer or Hampson forward if things aren't working up there so for me this provides us with enough options to kick enough goals to win each week and hopefully slow down the ball coming out of our forward 50.

----------

What is everyones views on having this kind of a setup:
- Do you believe it will work?

- Can you see a way for this setup to bite us in the arse?

I agree with opening the forward line up, not sure whether to set it up that way though.

Fevola, Betts and one of Robinson, Garlett or Yarran should definitely be there in that forward line. A main goal kicker and a couple of goal sneaks who work hard and put loads of pressure on the defenders.

Setanta is a worry for me. He just doesnt have the intincts of a footballer. He can take a mark and kick a goal here and there but he doesnt have the football brain.

I would like to see Fisher as an inside forward 50 marking option.Fisher was given a specific tactical role against essendon which didnt suit him and didnt end up working for most of the game.

Cloke should be used as playing true CHF presenting 60 to 80 metres out up the field. We havent been great at running it out of the backline since waite and thorntan have been injured, but when we did have that we looked like we didnt have many options to kick to further up the field. I think cloke is good at presenting and making the space and he is able to give that option for us.

Well he started and tried to push Fletcher out wide and further up the field so fletcher couldnt spoil fev...it worked a couple of times but it is obviously hard to touch teh ball when running along the sideline.

Based purely on the fact that he doesn't have the background?

Because this bears no relevance to the way he plays.

The pass to Fev after a mark, quick turn, and daisy cutter vs Saints was classic.

The goal Setanta kicked that week where he faked two guys, split them and put us back to within a kick......also pure footy brilliance.

In two games last year vs Pies he moved out the back of packs and made position with the ball in flight to kick a goal himself, and the other set Fev up for the opening goal in round 4 last year. Clever, smart play that created goals.

He has shown plenty of footy smarts.....and until Fev eneded his night by slamming into him, Setanta's "footy brain" saw him being the most effective forward on the ground.

He looks awkward, but people get stuck on perception and don't back it up.

Tell me, I've given you some examples of how well his "footy brain can work".....why don't you give me some examples of where he has been "dumb" as a footballer, as an indication he doesn't have this "footy brain".
