My musical 'discovery' of the past 2 years. Had always been aware of them, but never really gotten into them. UNTIL I heard GR. That album blew me away, and then some, and then some more. Became an instant fan, went out and bought BP, which is DAMN nearly as good. Those 2 albums blow my mind. From there I bought Damnation, which is an absolutely superb chill out album, and Deliverance, which isn't as good as GR or BP, but still excellent. I went out and bought Still Life the other day, listening to it as I type here. Has taken me a few listens to appreciate, but it's getting a strong hold now. Seriously starting to appreciate it now. My Arms Your Hearse is next.
And as for Opeth live, saw them earlier this year at the Forum in Melbourne.....I have no words to describe how amazing they were. Simply stunning. Sublime band.....

Damnation is simply beautiful. Åkerfeldt has an absolutely angelic voice, it's quite amazing. To boot, he's an exceptional songwriter.

Having said all that, Damnation is the only one I'm interested in. I simply despise 'cookie monster' vocals, and find my listening experience of the other albums ruined by his growling.

I used to be a major extreme metalhead for several years, but the vocals always annoyed me and that's why I don't listen to it much anymore. Case in point - when you have a voice as wonderful as Åkerfeldt's, why the fk do you waste it on doing pathetic childish growling on your other albums? Damnation shows how good he can be, and no doubt he'd have enough power to sing over more metallic riffs.

Just disappointing.

Still not sure if i like this band.

Been a pretty long time since i listened to much metal and certainly been ages since i got into a metal band that i wasn't already into as a 20 year old.

But I recently bought Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries. Before that i'd literally only heard 2 tunes which i've since worked out were from Damnation.

Probably havent given either album enough time to sink in yet, but I'm just not feeling it. Theres certainly elements of Opeth that appeal. They can definitely play. Really dig the bass player. Got some really nice feel which is rare for this kind of metal. And the drummer on these albums (who i believe is no longer with the band?) has some really cool ideas going on.

And from what i've heard they have some great arrangements. I can usually only take my prog metal (or whatever tag people put on that sound these days) in smallish doses although these guys do it very well and are melodic enough to keep my attention for longer than usual.

Just not sure about Åkerfeldt vocals. His clean vocals are nice enough and are very clean but from what i've heard they come across as lacking another gear. Just not a whole lot of power there and they seem to lack a bit of character IMO.

And i've never ever gotten into the whole harsh death growl kind of vocals. He seems to do it well enough, but i do agree with just maybe's post about it detracting from what are reasonably good songs.

And gee he is keen on himself. I got a bonus DVD with the GR album and Åkerfeldt comes across as a raging toolio. Not shy at all to talk him and his band up. He really seems to enjoy his own company.

I will persist though as there isnt a whole lot else out there in terms of current metal bands that even garner the slightest interest for me at the moment.

Yeah, if you're a knob.
You are a pathetic moron.

Don't ratt on people's taste in music if you do not like the band.

Opeth are one of the most musical bands around today. There is a sophistication in their music that is near untouchable. The musicianship in their music is second-to-none.

I do understand why people dislike the growling vocals, but for the people that do enjoy them, most would agree that Mikael has a sensational death-metal growl. There is clarity in his tones, and you can actually make out the stuff he is saying.

These guys are certainly my favourite band. I have all of their albums, yet unfortunately wasn't able to watch them earlier this year due to age. Disappointed about Martin Lopez leaving. He was such a great, creative drummer.

Don't worry about it, the new guy is amazing too. Too bad you couldn't go, they were undoubtedly one of the best bands I'vce ever seen, and I've been going to watch awesome bands since 1986!!!

And don't worry about people who wouldn't know amazing music if it bit them on the arse.....

Can't you do a search next time, there are plenty of Opeth threads around.

I'm over Opeth. Loved them for years, but now I can't escape the fact that they have re-recorded and rewritten 'Still Life' in 4 out of the last 5 albums they have released. Mikael comes off as a one trick pony, using the same riff time and time again (first riff off Serenity Painted Death) with only slight variations to make it sound like a new riff on every album since. It's as bad as U2 for mine.

It's ok if you luuuuurve everything about Opeth and Mikel, but once you get over that they are 'so musically talented' and everything, it's kind of sad that Mikael and Opeth collectively haven't done anything new metal wise for 7 years.

I was excited that Mikael was talking about the next album after Deliverance/Damnation was going to be a black metal album (and I loved Damnation for being something else, but in reality it's not an 'Opeth' album as they've said that it's a one off).

Fair enough, but I'm sure that the vast majority of listeners don't care whether they are innovative in the metal scene, rather that they just write good music. That is what they do, and that is what attracts the listeners, like me, to listen to them.

Opeth are unique. There are no carbon-copies of them, like all of the metalcore bands which all have massive breakdowns, mindless screaming, overused pinch harmonics and in effect, sound the same.

I love Damnation. the guitars, the vocals, everything.

when it comes to their other albums, I like GR and 'Still Life' the most. I'm a massive metal head and normally eat up the "cookie monster" stuff, but for some reasons with Opeth it just doesnt gel for me.:(

that said, went to their concert earlier this year and F-k'n loved it!!

I definitely respect the band, but I really could never get into progressive metal. But I do think Åkerfeldt is one of the greater metal vocalists of all time (second only to Dickinson). Martin Lopez is a pretty spectacular drummer as well, and is in my list of top fifteen drummers of all time (as far as metal goes, that is)
