I find it hard to judge a defender in this situation because I thought he was great offensively, but defensively he made some mistakes that cost them goals and Brisbane's small forwards like Cameron + Lohmann had big games tonight. Maybe that's just the reality of being a defender. I think I'll continue to wonder if playing him as a defender is the correct use of his ability.Great game by Connor
25 disposals, 9 score involvements, 515 MG and a goal
Funny, I watched only the first half and I thought except the goal he was poor. A lot of mistakes, mis-kicks, turnovers. I thought he should stick with defensive pressure forward (played the role quite well late for us).Great game by Connor

No defenders game is perfect. Rarely anyone can stop elite small forwards full stop, so you take the good with the bad.I find it hard to judge a defender in this situation because I thought he was great offensively, but defensively he made some mistakes that cost them goals and Brisbane's small forwards like Cameron + Lohmann had big games tonight. You answered your own question, the defensive role is the one he felt was his best position and the one he wanted to play. Why he left the suns. He was pushed out of that role in recent times with the likes of rioli and noble coming in.That's true. I just wonder if he should be playing a different position if he's able to put up offensive numbers like that. Budders always had speed and I personally think we didn't use his speed as much as we should have by choosing to play him as a lockdown small defender for most of his Suns career, but in saying that Dimma obviously had his favourites in terms of running halfbacks with Rioli and Noble. Then we gave him a chance as a small forward last year and he had some good moments but I could tell he was struggling with the contested marking / leading pattern side of it. He made it clear that he wanted to play as a defender in the off season and probably knew he wasn't going to get the opportunity to play that role for us for a long time with Patterson joining the list this year.
So what can you do? If we don't have an available position in his preferred spot on the ground and he doesn't want to play anywhere else on the field, then there's really only one option going forward and that's to be traded to another club. That's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes. I always liked Budders and I wish him all the best (except against us), as I'm sure our players do. Maybe our guys will get to reunite with Budders in an Origin match one day and he'll get to play his preferred position as a running halfback.
I did not watch 2nd half but I consider Budarick a poor defender one on one especially when he plays against small, fast forwards. You answered your own question, the defensive role is the one he felt was his best position and the one he wanted to play. They looked pretty good in the pre season games but so do I lol**** I hope St Kilda are still shit
This is what they get for singing "When the Saints go marching in" during a gosh darn MATCH SIMTheir fans thought they won the flag against us in preseason
The flooding back off turnover with 5 minutes left was mind boggling. Was about the only thing Ross did all night was get the message to the players to stop the flood. But it was far too late. Surely one of the over priced recruits could’ve led on fieldSaints played with more intensity and dare up 10 goals in the 4th period of a scratch match against our VFL squad than they did down 2 goals with 5 minutes left tonight. Says it all.
Had the game in his boot multiple times and choked big time.Sucked in Tom Lynch
