When was the last time these two came up against each other in a proper home and away game?

2007 Prelim: Fraser missed, Ottens dominated, we won.
2008: Ottens missed, Fraser dominated, they won.
2009: Ottens missed, Fraser dominated, we won.
2009 Prelim: Ottens will play, Fraser in doubt.

How important is it for Collingwood that Fraser gets up and plays? Ottens monstered Bryan and Richards in the 2007 Prelim and while they won't play this time around, the ruck still has to be a concern for the Pies.

Thoughts on the ruck battle?

This was the famous possessionless game by Trent West.

I think Ottens is primed for a big game this week, he's now played six matches in a row and from all accounts the week off would have been a good thing for him instead of making him lose momentum.

Fraser seems very doubtful from what I've heard/read, and even if he plays he'll be under an injury cloud.

If its only Wood in the ruck then i think we have an advantage.

IMO Blake is a better tap ruckman than wood, but less mobile.

And,

Otten's is a better tap ruckman/clearance gatherer/mobile forward than Wood is.

Look to see Otten's float forward on Wood, he has far superior strength and one on one skills.

Hey, nice avatar. Ottens in the forward line will be the spanner in the pies defence. Leigh Brown and Presti as their big defenders are no match for Ottens/Mooney/Hawkins. I'd be worried about Ottens going into this game if we were looking at Brogan/Lade or Gardiner/King - ie. a couple of big solid ruckmen... Playing against Woods though, and even Fraser will be like playing against high school kids as far as physicality goes. It'll be a training drill for big Bradley. He wont have to bash and crash too hard and will just have to focus on running the legs over to ensure he gets to the next contest. The harder run will be the next week if we play the Saints. Although King didn't play against us last time, Gardiner monstering Blake was the difference.

Pies generally keep Mooney quiet although I think it was Wakelin that used to towel him up.

This is the game where our big forwards need to stand up. It's fine saying we have them for height but if our talls are ineffective they could get away with playing an O'Brien or Maxwell on Hawkins and burning us in the other direction. The pies defence work well as a unit and have broken down our forward structure a number of times.

I think Ottens will be quite good against King and Gardiner. Both don't like to get down and dirty in the same way that Ottens does. I also think he is a far superior ruckman to King and will hold his own very nicely against Gardiner if we win through..

You're right that Ottens will be headache for the defence on the pies.

Saw it happen against the doggies. The minute he walks in there the defenders all slide down a peg. Doesn't mean we have to kick it too him, just have him in there.

Presti would surely have to go to Ottens when we rest him there. Leaving Maxwell/Brown to cover Mooney/Hawkins. I like those match-ups.

I think they'll put Obrien on Johnson if he comes up.

Yep, both Wakelin and Clement used to do decent jobs on Mooney. He was very quiet in the 07 prelim.

Presti played on him in round 3 this year and I remember thinking that Moons was too mobile and quick for him. His stats that night indicate that he played up the ground a bit that night.

Mooney - 13 possessions, 9 marks, 3 inside 50s, 1.1.
Presti - 11 possessions, 1 mark.

In round 3, Moons and Hawk combined for just the three goals.
Chapman, Johnson, Stokes and Varcoe kicked 11 between them. Clearly our mid-small forwards give them trouble (see: Stokes Q1 in 2007 prelim).

Geelong kills their own key forwards against Collingwood by going into their shell, mucking around, and letting them get loose men back (eg: Shaw, Maxwell).

I have plenty of confidence in our big forwards provided the midfield kicks the ball to them when they are 1 vs 1 instead of holding it up and kicking when they are 1 vs 3 and then idiot supporters blame the forward.

He also smashed his back into the goal post halfway though the 1st quarter...

I forgot about that, ouch.

Despite that, I think he kicked the most important goal of the whole match... the snap from the boundary after Clement put it deliberately OOB. If he'd missed the goal we would have gone into 3/4 time behind.

Yeah, no yips there ;)
Watch any highlights from 2007 and you will notice how much higher, and more often Moons would fly for marks.
Definitely lost some spring in his step.

We need forwardline pressure from johnson , varcoe and possibly rooke.

Also, who will be playing on didak, thomas, davis, medhurst?
Those rats always dominate us! I wouldn't mind seeing ling on Didak?

Another thing is we need to put together 4 quarters of football - not 1 dominating quarter.

Well look back to round 3 to see how our small forwards will go is a bit pointless. Mooney and Hawkins were both in really bad form early in the year and have only just started to find their feet. So i expect them to so much better this time round.

Didak - Dasher/Egan
Davis - Egan/Kelly/Mackie/Dasher
Thomas - Who cares, he has absolutely no effect on the game.
Medhurst - Who cares, he's lost his touch.

If Pendlebury doesnt come up and Ling can tag swan and keep him to 25 touches or less it will go a long way to geelong winning as thats their best two ball winners.

If thats the case then I can see our Bake/ottens combination palming to Ablett/Jimmy B/ Selwood/Corey as being too much for the pies.

What does Ottens have to do in order to beat Josh Fraser? Show up.

Even if he doesn't it will still be a close finish between the two.....
