13 games into our season and we haven't lost a 4th quarter all year, which is a stark contrast to recent seasons where we constantly struggled to run out games.

It's funny how the media never mentions anything about our fitness, yet in 2014 when Port Adelaide were running over the top of opposition teams in 4th quarters every week the media were jizzing over their fitness nonstop.

Hats off to our fitness and conditioning staff who have done an excellent job in turning our side into the fittest in the competition :thumbsu:

A mate texted me at 3/4 time saying 'I hope we get the 1st 2 this quarter'

I replied sayinfg yeah first 2 would be good

Or the first 5

When Hawks 2nd set shot from a tight angle went through my mate received
GET AROUND ME!!!

LOL

But good solid toast, for all the toys that get thrown from the Cot about 3rd quarters our last quarters have been largely sublime.
Our fitness is clearly up with the best, and mentally the players are playing the games out well.
We are using the interchange cap well and strategically resting blokes in the 3rd I think

I think there's a clear trend with our rotations being down in the 3rd, then bursting home in the last

Is there an easy way to separate games against top 8 from the other games?
Yep, but I need to be in front of a computer. I'll have a go tomorrow.

Also part of the reason the media aren't jizzing over how we are finishing games the same way they did about Port, is that we haven't been pumping up our own tyres about it.
Hinkley mentioned it every chance he got in 2014... As the late great Paul Couch said while on Open Mike, it was straight from the Blight text book... keep saying something enough and everyone starts to believe it, and the confidence within Port grew from there.. and concerns from other teams also.
Was genius from Hinkleys perspective

Also Port back then, and the Bulldogs this season (and 2015), are/were playing a kamikaze style game throwing everything into it every game. We aren't. Geelong has more talent on the park, so when we are pulling away in the 4th, it's because we are just outlasting the opposition. Port paid the price, and now the Bulldogs are paying the price with that type of approach. Collingwood got a premiership doing something just like that, but the wheels were starting to come off as 2011 finished. A lot of Pies players (eg Daisy, Swan, Reid, Beams) never really got their game back after they were flogged.

Thanks, catempire.

I suppose that figure quoting our first quarter cumulative percentage against the bottom 10 is supposed to comfort me when we're two goals down against the Dons at the first break on Sunday.

Nice try, but I still think I will be absolutely livid.;)

That first quarter % tells the story, we're just giving poor teams a shot from complacency and forcing us to run them down .

Round 4 Geelong 2.3 Essendon 2.2
Round 5 Geelong 1.4 Port Adelaide 5.4
Round 9 Geelong 0.3 Collingwood 7.5
Round 10 Geelong 3.6 Carlton 4.0
Round 14 Geelong 1.4 St Kilda 4.2
Round 17 Geelong 1.3 Freemantle 4.1

Another interesting thing I found looking at the data was in all of our five losses we have not been in front at any quarter break in the match. We were behind at the end of 19 quarters and level in 1. Another way to look at that is we have a 100% winning record when we hit the lead at any quarter time break in any match. No team has come from behind at any quarter break to beat us.

Where there any games where this was close to being broken?

In the losses, the closest is Round 2 v GWS where we were only 2 down at QT (and ended up getting done by 13) and in Round 14 v St Kilda when we nearly came back to win, hitting the lead late but them kicking a late goal to win by 3.

In the wins, we have been behind at a quarter break in six out of the 13. Interestingly, only two of those have been 3QT - round 1 v Hawthorn and Round 11 v GWS. In the 11 others we have been in front at 3QT.

In 11 out of 13 wins we have won the last quarter. The two anomalies are the past two wins where we were out scored by 8 and 2 points.
