It's really not.

What matters to those who matter (The AFL, broadcasters, sponsors, etc) is the total crowd. The Carlton v Richmond crowd in round 1 wasn't irrelevant to Richmond just because it was an away game for example.
Now now boys... we sit on top of both ladders, they both matter! :D

Not 'irrelevant', but home crowds are where the host club makes bank as a vital portion of its business model. It's why membership and stadium deals are so vitally important. It's why Hawthorn and North have pushed into Tasmania. It's why Geelong has spent the past 15 years pushing hard for its taxpayer-funded Kardinia Park upgrades, etc.

Consider also, if a club like North has a run of away games against Richmond, WCE, Adelaide and Port those resultant bumper crowd figures have practically zero to do with the Arden Streeters.

They're certainly not taking any matchday revenue home or contributing to paying the operational costs of the hosts beyond turning up as 'away team', but jeez, doesn't their "total crowd" figure receive an artificial pump-up.

For the club, sure, but as I pointed out, the other stakeholders couldn't care less.

The AFLs stadium deals in Vic mean they get paid bonuses for big crowds at the MCG (and now that they own it more people at Docklands directly going to their bottom line). Richmond pulling most of a big crowd at their away game against Melbourne is a win as far as the league is concerned and it's the league being happy that means that fixture will happen again. The crowd and atmosphere mean both Ch7 and both clubs sponsors are happy with the game The latter meaning Richmond makes more $$$). Away game members (for games between Vic clubs at least) mean money go into both clubs pockets. Few people outside the Melbourne football club would care that it's their home game.

If you don't think being the away team at a 'big' match is lucrative, ask yourself why Collingwood is willing to be the 'away' team every year for the queens birthday match...it ain't through charity.

Your crowds against West coast (42,523) and Sydney (58,721) are in my opinion or you most impressive crowds this season. Naturally you'll get big crowds playing local Victorian clubs but unlike other Victorian teams to get those crowds against non Victorian sides is impressive. Be really interesting to see what crowds you get when playing Brisbane (Etihad) and Western Sydney (MCG) later this season.

Brisbane will be relatively poor (Docklands isn't really a home game)....mid 30s?
GWS should be a decent crowd, probably not as big as Sydney (which still has a decent sized Melb support base) but mid 40s, maybe even low 50s should be quite doable depending on form.

That's not emtrirely correct not every side gets 64k + playing on a Sunday Arvo in the worst timeslot. I'd go as far as saying its a record crowd for 3.20 Sunday . What do melb, or WB or haw or saints get when they draw the blues

Biggest Sunday afternoon crowd by a considerable margin this year. For MCG games
round 3 Carl v Ess 48K
round 6 Geel V Coll 46K
round 7 Melb V Haw 38K
round 9 Melb V Norf 33K
round 14 Rich V Carl 64K
