I haven't been able to see a game all yeah due to the fact that i haven't installed a TV antenna in my new home, so, from what i have heard and some of the stats i have read our forwards, mid's seem to be in good shape for the future but what about our backline ?

As far as i can tell we really don't have any key players down there besides lid's & newman, we seem to be able to kick goals fine and run it through the middle but it looks like we are contantly getting overrun in the backlines.

Should we start to think about replacing some of these players to develop a stronger defence or is it a matter of persisting with these guys ?

Definitely need bigger blokes down there,we have too many malnourished defenders.

I reckon we need a really good mid size defender and maybe that's Grimes. We always get torn up by teams like the Dogs and Melbourne because they play a forwardline of flankers and pockets.

Rance is very good, but is still a stupid descision maker - Keep

McGuane is crap.

Astbury/Grimes/Gourdis are young, will have more time to develop.

Moore is injured, which is a huge blow

Thursfield, who? Was he all just a figment of our imagination, haven't seen him in Coburg or the injury list.

.... Our defense was under siege today , I thought they kept us in it. I wouldn't be looking t the back half for our loss today.

while our defense isnt fantastic, it has showed a bit of improvemtn as the year has gone on and is head and shoulders better than last year. but today there were too many csotly turnovers THAT is where we lost the game.

Apparently next year is whent he defensive aspect of dimma's game plan comes into effect. as I notice we are one of a few teams without a defensive press.

thursfield, mcguane and gourdis all need to go, mcguane will probably stay, but the other two need to be replaced at least, as does post IMO.

you do realise grimes is 193cm and destined to play fb for us. because of his size atm he is in the short term just a third tall option.

i would have thought we have three potential medium sized defenders dea orielly and kel moore. we can also expect conca and batchelor to spend further time down back as part of their development.

next yr and im going to use some wishful thinking here i would like to see our backline look something like this.

b/ batchelor - rance - grimes.
hb/ moore - trengove -dea/orielly
other running options of hb deledio houli newman grigg conca .all of whom should be part of midfield rotations.

Have heard worrying stories that Moore will never play again. His hip is really bad.

I dunno what the clearance stats were today, but it seemed to me that Melbourne were pumping it long inside 50 with very little midfield pressure on them. Sure, none of them had a great day, but it's easy to blame our defence when really there should have been more pressure up the field to stop it going in there so often. I think that's something that Hawthorn do pretty well, which is why their injury hit defence isn't costing them matches yet.

First post here BTW, hope we enjoy a good back half to 2011. :)

Would be a bit of a blow if true, but I also heard similar things about Michael Barlow.
