Id be interested to see what you guys thought our best 22 is and if everybody was fit and ready to go for this weekends game against Port, who would you choose. I find it quite difficult to pick a team.

Thoughts?

Glass McIntosh Collica
Read Jackovich Morrisson
Braun Banfield Jones
Wirra Siera Merenda
Fido Buzan Pe Matera
Gardy Cuz Kerr

Gaspar, Cox, Williams, Taylor

Emg: Munro & Haynes

Williams McIntosh Collica
Glass Jakovich Peter Matera
Wirrapunda Banfield Jones
Embley Sierakowski Morrison
Phil Matera Cummings Merenda
Gardiner Cousins Kerr
Cox or Gaspar, Wilson, Read, Prior

Emerg from: Cox or Gaspar, Taylor, Fletcher, Hunter, Wooden, Carroll, Braun, Munro, Green & Haynes

This is my attempt at best side now, assuming all are fit (which never happens). This does not plan for the future, so I would not in fact play this team (I'd be giving, say, Hunter a go at HFF), but does try to take account of team balance. This means I don't know our best side now. And anyway, I don't think it's very good.

And another thing: not only is this incredibly hard to do, but it highlights our needs going forwards: namely where are the midfield players who will win the ball and then deliver it accurately into the forward line??????

Once it gets there, whether it's a fit and confident Scotty on a lead, a Wilson making a contest or any of Gaspar, Siera, Gardiner, whoever, we have some small crumbing forwards (Materas, Merenda) and some other potential "small forwards", Embley, Hunter, Wirra, Morrison, Williams or whoever. But who will deliver the ball (apart from Ben)? Ah, Tommy in the trenches, we miss you more than I can say. Short term fix might be Peter Matera, you know.

I cant believe you reckon we have no one to deliver the ball the forwards.....Michael Braun would have the best foot skills going around at the club. When he is in form and fully fit, I would say nine out of his ten passes would hit the full forward right on the chest - and you haven't even included him in your side.

I will even go as far to say that he has better disposal than Ben Cousins.

No doubt about Brauns skills but he used to be hard at the ball and he just isn't any more. I accept that this may be injury related but I need to see him play a good game to be convinced again.

Two sides. Our best and who I'd like to be seeing play at Port.

Best

Read, Milli, Collica
Prior, Glass, Wirrapunda
Morrisson, Kerr, Jones
Haynes, Sierra, Merenda
Gaspar, Cummings, Fido

Gardy, Cuz, Banfield

Wooden, Jako, Cox, Buszan

emerg. Green, Hunter, Chambers, Munro

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week assuming Wirra is out injured
Green, Antonowitz, Collica
Williams, Glass, Hunter
Wooden, Kerr, Braun
Chambers, Haynes, Merenda
Munro, Cummings, Fido
Gardy Cuz Jones
Carrol, Cox, Jako, Milli
I that because we have depth, or because we lack it?
I don't think it is possible to pick a best 22. So many players have been introduced into the side that it is impossible to compare them to the likes of Read, Siera, Braun, etc. I mean, Haynes is getting 15 possessions a game in a depleted squad, while Read gets 15 possessions in a full team. Same goes with Fletcher and Braun.
Thats what i think at least, though i tend to think a lot of crap.
Well i started the thread i may aswell have a go.
Wirrpunda McIntosh Collica
Glass Jakovich Pet Matera
Braun Banfield Jones
Williams Seirra Morrison
Fido Cummings Merenda
Gardy Cuz Kerr
Fletcher Carroll Read Taylor/Cox
Man thats tough to do, Wooden, Wilson, Haynes and many others were stif to miss out.
Wont even attempt this until I see who we trade and delist and pick up.
Vis *signing off on this subject till squads are finalised*
MDB - Understand where you're coming from on Braun and I've argued with friends on this one - it seems to be 50:50. I've seen most of the few games he's played this year at AFL & WAFL level. I don't agree with your 9/10 point on foot skills, but I hope there's a Victorian coach who does as I suspect he's our best trade bait.
If he stays, I will of course support Braun to the hilt. I also left out Fletcher, which was probably harsh, but you can only pick 22!
Frodo - your bench is too tall. I had exactly the same problem and ended up cheating with Gaspar or Cox. One solution if Siera doesn't come up early next year is to play Gardy at CHF a lot, Cox more in the ruck and have Gaspar as a bench or forward and back player. I certainly think we have enough decent talls, which is good, as long as they develop.
Incidentally, it shows how unclear we all are on what our best side is. I think this is a key issue going forward, as the coach MUST know what his best side is to do the job properly.
I'll stand by my talls VOR. I think it is getting to be a taller player game especially in the forward line and defence. One reason is Colonial stadium. Roof closed so no wet weather games. That suits talls. Wet weather suits the smaller players.
Which brings me to another point about this season. I changed seats to the city end. Front row of second tier above the Woosha room. I expected a few soakings but the view is excellent. All I got was sunburn in the Ansett cup!!!! We hae had no wet games at Subi and teams with tall forwards have murdered us. Lloyd, Richardson etc. I woder how we would have gone if it had been wet?
Anyhow, with Colonials roof closed there will be more dry weather footy, more tall attacks and more tall defences.
And thats one reason I am hoping to see Antonowitz looking good at the weekend.
Our forwards are very suspect arent they. I think we only have 1 top flight forward that would probably get a spot in most sides and that is Phillip Matera. When fit he is always good for 3-4 goals a game. But then its all down hill. Wilson has 40 goals in 17 games or something which is certainly good but he isnt very consistent and not very straight. Embly is hot and cold and most times just luke warm.
Williams is more of a utility, he plays back, forward and on a wing but when forward isnt a force. Cummings can be a dominant forward but injuries and poor form has hurt him. Merenda has been good for us and usually provides a target and gets at least a goal a game. Havent seen enough of Seirakowski or Gaspar up forward and only Haynes shows promise of the youngsters.
Are forwards struggle to kick more than 10 goals a game, this is certainly something we need to address. Some of the problem comes from the midfield not delivering the ball well enough or often enough but something has to be done.
Thoughts?
No wet games at Subi? I nearly drowned during the Brisbane game!!
I'll be a bit surprised if Antonowitz gets a game this weekend - he looked like one of 3 emergencies to come out of the squad to me.
I think our problem is more midfield than forwards. Forwards always look bad when they're not getting a fair share of the ball, which leads to confidence drop and a vicious downward spiral. I reckon, apart from no standout CHF (Siera untested yet), our forward structure would go fine if it got more of the ball.
Garry, cuz, banfield, Kerr is a decent centre square! A couple of good defenders and then it starts to fall away pretty quick
Fall away is an understatement.. we were shit in 2001 anyway :P
