I call it our bottom 6 as there not proven finalist.t hunt.caddy.rivers.motlop.vardy.blicavs.so we need a few of these guys to play well in a final.others have done it before

Wouldn't class Motlop as one of our bottom 6, at least not this year. He, T.Hunt and Vardy all played in the elimination final last year too.

Rivers played 3 finals at Melbourne too, so he's had a taste of finals footy, even if it was about a decade ago.

This thread depends a bit on how you define bottom 6
If you are talking least capable players, then right now I would include Hawkins
If you were talking order they are selected in then there Motlop, RIvers, & Blicavs are among the first picked,
Talking historically Hawkins has been a great player for us but right now, with the body like it is, he is not playing up to form
If you are working on the belief that the bottom 6 players in a team are often the deciding factor come finals then you have to look at current form
On that basis I would not count Motlop on that list, would include Hawkins and maybe would swap out T Hunt for Guthrie on game day
Have Guthrie as the final member of that bottom 6

Motlop is in the AA squad - definitely not bottom 6.

It is concerning that two of our bottom 6 players are our two ruckmen, going up against one of the best rucks of the past decade.

Motlop with a tag is definitely in our bottom 6.

It's unfair, I know, but that's what its going to be. His rise is so fast, I believe the pressure for him in the finals is going to be a big ask.

If he gets buried, hope he sticks to his guns and works hard at it.

If we are talking about the team today - I would start with THunt, Blicavs and Vardy. Simply because they have not proven themselves in the senior team as the others have.

All the other players playing today have shown, even Motlop, over a period of time in the seniors they good senior players. THunt was on the verge but his performances after injuries in the last 2 seasons has seen him drop back IMO.

When Vardy and Blicavs have 50 senior games we will know more - but neither have done enough to be considered good AFL players. No one really gets that tag without playing 50 senior games. So they have to be in the bottom 6 of our players list.

Caddy is then next - as he too is a bit inexperienced. Plus he just doesn't have the decision making and his kicking skills can sometimes be a bit ordinary. So although has shown a tad more than the other 3 he also fits into the bottom 6. After that it would be hard to really pick another 2.

If these 4 players, THunt, Vardy Blicavs and Caddy play well today we will win this game against Freo.

Assuming Hawkins plays a bit better - it is often the weakest links in your team that cause real issues in big games like finals. So if they play well - we will be so much better. No weak link.

Of course there is a question mark over Motlop given his last 2 weeks. Is he injured ? He is also inexperienced relative to most of our players - so he needs a good game also.

Would prefer to be in our shoes than Richmond's though. Apparently 18 of their selected 22 haven't played finals.

Can remember our first final in 2004 when most our side hadn't experienced September action, and we were like deers in the headlights for most of that game.

Caddy is number one on the chopping block for mine. Watching him constantly turn it over while Chappy sat on the bench did my head in. Oh and 0 Tackles Tackles!

Edit: scratch that #1 is Walker not AFL standard. Should be delisted.

This year, this year.

Scott seems fixated on 2015. If you look at his youth policy, that is where a lot of his selections makes sense.

But we only get to play in the year we are playing in. Why leave out the more experienced West in favor of Vardy? Why have Chappy on the bench? And although he has played games, Rivers played like a guy who never played a finals before. He may have, but he was green today. Is J Hunt injured?

I think Caddy and Motlop got found out today. I predicted Motlop would find it hard.

And I think we know just how good Guthrie is. Thats a plus!

I thought Rivers did a lot of good things.

I think my earlier post stands after today.

The young guys who lack experience were pretty much showed up today except Guthrie.

Our bottom 5-6 have to get better but that will only happen next season as they need games.

Walker is not senior standard yet- nor Caddy nor Blicavs nor Vardy. Maybe they will all come good but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Let's see them really make a difference consistently before we thinks of them as senior players.

I think JHunt will replace Enright and GHS should replace Caddy. Unsure who will replace Walker.

GHS has missed out this year because of Caddy IMO.

There are only so many spots. I got attacked here for daring to mention GHS this year is the more accomplished player. GHS is all boring and homegrown - Caddy is a star from somewhere else, dontcha know!

Can't blame Walker IMO.
Poor guy has been playing VFL all year then gets thrust into an AFL final against one of the most intense sides in the comp.
Although in saying that the guy couldn't catch a cold in Antarctica.

Hawkins....half fit he is better than Walker.
Jab him up and get him out there. He has 3 games at most and then can have a couple of months to get right

Agree, agree RegHickeyStand. Horlin-Smith much smarter player but we did recruit Caddy so choices and decisions have to be played out. Do we have the best Coaching staff? In our best years we had Hinkley and Sanderson now we have O'Bree and Caracella.
Don't blame our rucks, Dawson Simpson and big loss and West should have been played today. Agree also on 2015 might be the aim but we should play with what we have for now and that is 2013. For goodness sake we finished 2nd, beat all of the teams in the four including the minor premiers and the reigning premiers twice.
What the hell happened today-no Hawkins?????.

Caddy plays ahead of GHS because the role available is forward/mid not 100% mid which is what GHS is.

To be honest I'm surprised GHS wasn't permanent mid after that early game against the Swans.

The main problem is the match committee backed in Hawkins all year instead of working on a contingency. They had the option of playing Walker as CHF a while ago and instead played the 3 rucks.

Losing Simpson and then Hawkins not improving has cost us. I have no doubt that with Simpson and a 90% Hawkins we are the best team in the comp.

I hope Hawkins is ok for next week. If not, then playing him every week has made it worse. I cannot see how the inflammation that would be caused by the week in week out grist wouldn't make it worse.

Had Chappy not been injured during the season, then where were we supposed to fit Caddy? I feel Caddy has not really earned his spot this year and has been gifted it. And the result is today's game. His game is brittle. Two players I would have in before him are GHS and Thurlow. There is something about Thurlow. Watched him a Hawthorn game when it was white hot, and he was so cool under pressure.

A few years back we had Mitch Duncan in the 2011 GF team and he barely deserved to be there. You can maybe afford one or two in the team when you have established side like we did. We had about 7 out there today that were basically there on a promise. And an absolute champ of the game in the vest. Got what we deserved. 2015 could see GC sweep all before them. We should have concentrated on 2013.

GHS wasn't played because Corey was. Doubt it's anything to do with Caddy. Caddy is competing with Smedts and Murdoch for a spot.

We've got a far bigger problem - we had our best possible midfield in today and got slaughtered.

That "policy" is going to be put to the test now. Who plays out of Horlin-Smith or Corey? Or Lonergan or Brown?

One positive came out of today's wreckage - a few more people have realised how good Guthrie is. Not much otherwise.
