This is a puzzling one and it has been happening to us for years now, it shouldn't be happening to us, we have a lot of experience in the side but yet week in week out it happens. Is this a mental issue? Is it the fact we might be carrying some fragile players? Or do we just get arrogant when we get a few goals up and we switch off?

We really need to start looking at this issue, it seems to me that too many players go missing all of a sudden and we just seem to stand around and watch the other team pile on the goals. Just a massive worry and issue at Carlton at the moment, and we need to fix it quickly.

All sides get periods in a game of football where they dominate possession of footy, some use that period a lot better than others, but the good sides can stem this period and hang tough to not allow the opposition to score, until the momentum swings back there way, we need to learn how to hang tough when these periods occur during games, I think we are getting better, but have a big area to improve this, which to me is a good thing.

I am positive these lapses and our goal kicking are mental. We need to be stronger mentally.

Every single game this year, we have switched off for a good 10-20 mins and have allowed the opposition to dictate play. When we are in front, I believe we get this mindset that we will just stay in front and we won't have to work hard. This has been an issue with us for years. And it really is frustrating. All teams in the comp have an ability to switch off for a period of the game, but for us we are very poor at stemming the flow when the opposition gets on top. They score really easy goals. It's way too predictable. Once the Lions got a run on in that second qtr, you could just tell we were going to struggle to stop it.

I've harped on our goal kicking in the review thread from last night's game. I just don't think any player is confident enough in their own ability to put it through the big sticks. And when players keep missing, it psychologically grows on teammates and they don't have the confidence. Again, this has been an issue for us for years, and I wonder if we will ever fix it, because put simply, you need to take chances if you want to beat the Cats, Hawks or Swans.

Goal conversion is another...
It's a lot of this...

Two crucial missed shots that turned into goals at the other end. Tom Bell in the second, and Mitch Robinson in the last.
Too many twelve point turnarounds when we have the momentum.

Whilst I admired his game last night, Mitch is continually burning the ball.
We need the class of Betts and Yarran back in and the poise of Carrazzo to steady us.

With that said, we're still consistently outscoring sides.

Since West Coast (29 scoring shots to 30, we've gone)
30-23 against Adelaide
31-20 against Melbourne
23-22 against St Kilda
29-21 against Port
33-25 against Brisbane

I don't think it's MM it's the cattle, this has been happening for years, not new or recent, the other huge concern is we seem to drink our own bathwater and get done by teams that aren't that good, another thing that has been happening for years. This is either due to the fact that our players are too arrogant and cocky, or are soft. I think it is a combination of the two, I have noticed over the years when we do get done, the other team just seems to hit us hard or turns it up a slight notch and we go missing.

Goal conversion is another..

Momentum is a funny thing, comes and goes during the games, we have work to do

Agree. Mitch Robinson kicks that goal in the last and its game over. Misses, Lions kick the next one and the door remains open.

We missed heaps n the 1st and 4th qtrs

As Leigh Matthews said on Friday

"It's not hard to identify what the problem is, but sometimes it's hard to fix the problem"

In a general sort of way we need players who can rise to the occassion when the momentum is not rolling their (or the teams) way. The central criticism of Carlton that Malthouse made before being coach was that we were too dependent on Judd. Whic I interpreted as a dependence on Judd to swing the momentum.

To his credit MM has thrown the responsibility on a range of midfield players this season including the young guys. Of course this 'process' is going to take time, but teaching people to be responsible for themselves and not rely on other to do things for them takes time in life as it does in football.

Who are the guys that have stood up this year? I'm not talking about who has improved per se, but who has shown the resolve and will to fight through the oppositions dominance.

I'll get the ball rolling and nominate McLean.

Yes have been impressed with McLean and Bell and Cachia give us the hardness we so desperately need. I think we need to keep playing the two of them, the more games they get the better and more confident they will be. Last night I think it was these two who also stood up, when our so called stars were going to water very quickly.

Good post, yes Brock certainly comes to mind, Walker another, all though last night was not one of his best for the year, other than that he has been really good in turning defence into offence, and a lot of the time against the flow.

Walker was tagged well last night. .. Saw Rowan Bewick make a bee line toward him everytime he came on. .. and Bewick was also able to hurt him going back the other way (similar to some of the jobs Robbo has done on old man Fletcher). .. Definitely had his colours lowered. ..

Think a few of our lesser players are standing up this year which is good. .. Some of our senior players need to do the same more consistently though. ..

In no particular order I sense this coming from

Jaryd Cachia -- his opponent burnt him in the second quarter but he didn't give up and fought through Moloney's electric play
Ed Curnow -- goes about it quietly but another who rarely gives in
Dennis Armfield -- when the going gets tough Army tries his level best
Tom Bell -- kid proved he had steel last night. Could have gone to water but didn't. Needs to work on his footy brain but he's a goer.
Michael Jamison -- Jamo has more than taken that next step this year. If he's not AA at the end of the year it'll be a disgrace.
Jeff Garlett -- This was one of his biggest criticisms over the past couple of seasons. He's a new player, a new man this year. A bit quiet last night but showed his nerve.

Notice most of those guys are our "grunt" workers. That bodes well for us in the future. They're bridging the gap between our best and our worst of the 22 which to me was one of the most important things we had to do this year. You could almost add Zach Tuohy to that list as well.

Yeah the "senior players" have been down a bit this year, I don't know if this a good thing or bad, GOOD: because as the old saying goes in footy, you can only keep good players down for so long before they will have an impact.
BAD: because some are in a hole that looks to deep that they may not get out of.
On a positive note, we are getting out of mick exactly what he is renowned for, turning average fringe players into solid team orientated contributors every week.

How true.

The thing that gives me some comfort here is that we're not setting out to change personnel to plug holes but to let the players keep working into their roles.
There is little, "you're not doing you're job, we're moving you" and more of "we trust you to get it right and this is what is you have to do"

That takes some resolve and Mick can afford to do it but it also shows trust in his players to come good.
The same formula is being used in the seconds and is already netting results.

With this in mind, it will be interesting if White gets a game next week.

How many sides consistently play four quarter football in the modern game? Hawthorn and Geelong are the in form teams at the moment but look at the Hawks' third quarters from the last few weeks. We slipped a bit toward the end of the second quarter last night, but we recovered very well.

all true but our kicking for goal is consistently terrible. it will cost us a match soon.

True. .. It was mainly down to not been able to defend the momentum switch in the second. .. They had the same momentum swing in the last quarter last night and we took some crucial marks in defense and eventually swung back into attack. .. Accuracy cost us a bigger win. .. Like it did for our lead in the second quarter, worst been Bell's miss in the 2nd because he was clearly in two minds about doing the right thing and chipping over the top to Lucas, so should have done the right thing. ..

Players will come in and out and right now, I can't begrudge any player getting a game.

I've left him in our squad for next week and it will be a little more difficult for changes this week having not had a VFL game this week.

Nothing against White but I still don't see what he brings that Laidler can't.

Speed...

It's as simple as that, the third man up is a thing of the past when you play against quality opposition because the forwards spread and isolate the weakest link one on one.

Jamo, Hendo, Touhy and White all have speed which means we will never be exposed one on one. It's the same reason Bootsma is getting a game...
