Hey guys, looks like we get pick 17? Is that right?
Anyways, to my point, a lot of trial drafts/phantom drafts have Scott Selwood around the pick 15 - 19. My question is, if he slips down to our first pick, would you like to see him at Geelong next year knowing that he possibly won't play next year cause of year 12 but has the potential to be better than Joel.

Grab him - stick him in St Joseph's for the year. If he's half as good as Joel, go for him.

The whole 'the next brother is better than the one prior' is a myth. And arguably a false one at that.

I'm willing to bet that more than half the people who are actually spreading these 'Scott's even better than Joel'-type comments haven't even seen the lad play.

Joel is the best of the brothers. Seen Scott a few times this year and really hasn't stood out. Will be a great talent, certainly not the best.

Scott is 2 inches taller than Joel and not as good. He amazed all by getting AA this year. He can still play for Bendigo next year. He got injured the 2nd last game, they thought he had broken his leg but turned out to be just ligament damage from memory. I would be interested to hear where Kevin Sheehan thinks he should go seeing he was the one that said Joel was the number 1 pick in Sept. last year.

Pretty much. I think even Scott acknowledged that Joel was always "the main talent" in the family in a recent TAC puff-up piece.

Scott's played in the back-pocket for most the year, and really, while there's alot to like about him, I'd be looking in other directions with our first pick before I considered taking Scott (who's much the same of what we already have on our list at the moment).

everyone hs been saying that scott is nowhere near as good as joel. When Joel was in year 11 and competed in the carnival they said he was the equal if not better then marc murphy who that year was taken as the number 1 pick. we should take a key defender and then a small tagging defender with our next pick( thats if donohue is not worth uch aa high pick)

Henderson is Top 10 material.

He's missed alot of the year, but he's a known commodity from way back into his junior days. Skilled talls like him don't come too often.

Two points:

Everything I've heard about Scott is 'good but nowhere near Joel'. If he's a good small defender than go for it; however, personally I would much prefer the emphasis to be on KPPs/utilities/rucks.

That draft is hella old; has Richmond taking Kreuzer. Obviously the different interests of clubs make it more complex than 'bump every player up one'; are we sure Scott will still be around?

If a player like Jack Grimes slipped he would be a good get for that midfield. He runs his heart our like Joel Selwood and would be another work horse that would only stregthen an already great centre line. With the position your in though, best availible is appropriate with no glaring needs at the moment.

lets hope McEvoy slips to us!

I really think just go for the best KP defender available... this is our main weakness at the moment in terms of depth. Chasing after the 2nd in a pair of brothers is just a novelty which rarerly delivers. Nathan Ablett hasn't been that great compared to Gary jr, and what has the Raphael Clark / Xavier Clark duo given to St Kilda?

I think we are getting ahead of ourselves here.

Firstly we haven't locked in P17 or P whatever.

Secondly , with our first pick late in the first round we will be in a similar position to 2004 in which our experts assessed the draft and traded the pick ( and a player) for Ottens. Considering the form of Brad , if the right player was available , one good enough to fit into our best 10 to 15 players I wouldn't be surprised if we went for another mature player.

Thirdly , We probably have several players that might interest other clubs who will be able to offer an easier path to AFL footy. Depending on if one of our players decide to move may effect any choices. For example , if West went Id think we seriously have to look at rucks.Injuries may also effect choices , think if Egan turns out worse than feared we are a bit thin in young, tall, talented backman.

In the end ,come draft day , I place my trust in our recruiting dept to make the right pick. If Scott Selwood is available and in the opinion on Welles he is the best pick then Im sure we will take him.If not , we will get some other kid who will develop into a another young gun Cat. It will sort itself out in time.

I like the idea of trading for a mature player but I doubt it will ne feasible for the simple reason that I don't think we will have the salary cap room. There is not a lot of holes in our team either. Hawkins & N.Ablett should turn the 2nd tall into a strength soon and we have Varcoe improving as a smalll forward. Hunt and Tenace are fighting it out for back pocket so it would have to be a pretty big talent to be confident of always playing in our starting 22.

I think the only players that would be interested in leaving the cats would be Prismall, Callan, David Johnson, Tenace & Byrnes. None would significantly effect our drafting policy.

I compeletely agree about having faith in Wells. As an archair recruiter I would love to see us pick up Selwood or Grimes with our first pick. Both seem to have a great attitude which is important.

It seems like we have traditionally given Wells a license to punt on one mature age player a year (Stokes, Egan, Davenport). Interesting to see if he goes for Thompson this time.

Also depends on whether Donohue wants to be drafted, I think he still has a year left, but is a contender for FS for sure.
