Not wanting to nitpick im just wondering. I've noticed that we've lost 4/5 3rd quarters so far this year. I just think against a geelong or hawthorn thats a big No. I don't know why it's happening but i think Mick needs to start working on some pump up speeches for half time!

but apart from that! we havent lost a final quarter yet and the boys are really shifting a gear towards the end and burying teams! Fingers crossed we can keep up some good form!

Yeah I've been a little bit worried by it as well, but hey as long as we're undefeated and topping the ladder really how can you complain? Mick seems pretty happy with how things are rolling along too, so I'll just assume it's all going according to his plan so far, Mick isn't the kind of coach who will let his side slack off in a quarter week after week if he didn't want it happening.

It really seems that 10 minute period just after half time, where we come out a bit flat and maybe aren't working as hard as we were before the break, and especially late in games.

It might have something to do with the fact we have so many "gut runners", who need to maintain their intensity to have an effect on the game, or it may just be a coincidence.

I though we actually won the game today in the last 10 minutes of that 3rd quarter though, because most of us knew that if we could go into 3/4 time with a 2 or 3 goal lead, we weren't going to lose.

Surely the coaching staff will notice the disparity between our 3rd quarters and the rest of our matches though, something will change, hopefully soon, because we have 2 massive tests in our next 2 opponents.

Considering it's happened almost every week, I'm wondering whether it might actually be intentional.

Have you also noticed that as a result, we have ran out all of our games the stronger side?

Richmond and Carlton ran out of legs in the final quarters. If the game went on today for another 5 minutes, we would've kicked another 2 - 3 goals.

Given the sub rule, and the need to manage fitness and energy levels, it's clear that no side can produce a solid 4 quarter effort at high intensity.

There's going to be times in a match when we lower our intensity, as all sides will do. It's about timing your energy levels.

We usually come out firing and finish firing.

Meh, we are 5 & zip. Been challenged a couple of times and responded like great sides do. We are going good.

I would like to see what our 1st, 2nd, 4th quarter results are like. I would think 1 or 2 or them we would be winning at 100%. So as long as we are dominating the 1st,2nd and 4th quarters I will take the loss in the 3rd.

the opposition will always come out firing, often trying to re-enter a game with new positioning or tactics to find winners on the ground. it can take a while to re-establish the ascendenacy, but considering our starts, we can afford this luxury. our ability to run out games in becoming the norm so theres certainly no need to panic. but yes it could be a factor against say geelong, hawthorn or freo.

the longer the season goes will only help.

Best article in Big Footy..

Collingwood have some real problems at half time.

we have been smashed in 3rd quarters.

Ok, here is the breakdown

1st quarters won 4 out of 5 (lost by 1pt)
2nd quarters won 4 out of 5 (lost by 4pts)
Final quarters won 5 out of 5

We have won 1 3rd quarter for the year. I will give you the margins in a sec.

1st quarter we have scored 178 to 73
2nd quarter we have scored 159 to 81
Final quarter we have scored 204 to 54

We really are dominating the final quarters in both points scored and against which is a positive

and what about 3rd quarters where every team so far has come back at us?

You are not going to be happy Dr....

I had to check twice:

Rnd1 PA = 6.0 - 5.3 (+3 PA)

Rnd2 NM = 2.3 - 6.4 (+25 Cwood)

Rnd 3 Car = 3.1 - 3.1 (even)

Rnd 4 Rich = 6.3 - 2.3 (+24 Rich)

Rnd 5 Ess = 4.2 - 3.3 (+5 Essen)

Meaning we have been outscored by a total 7 lousy point over 5 rounds...OMG

Yes the get run ons but we get them by the end of the qtr.

I think its more the first 10 minutes of the 3rd quarters, where we seem to undo our good work by going to sleep and letting in a few quick ones.

Common theme: Malthouse starts Swan (our best player with Pendlebury) on the bench to start every 3rd quarter. We seem to give up the first goal or two after half time every game. Swan sits on the pine while this happens.

Would Ablett, Hodge, Bartel, Pavlich, et al start on the pine after half time?

Not sure what gives ... maybe Mick is trying to test others to handle the centre square sans Swan.

I'm not a fan of this 'tactic'.

Another explanation is the third quarter being the premiership quarter. Opposition sides are pumped to beat us with the way they can - punishing speed through the corridor after breaking our forward pressure. Problem is they are playing catch up football and this style of football cannot be sustained over four quarters. It is burst football. It seems like we've been caught napping 7 or 8 goals in front but we are actually sticking to and maintaining our structures which inevitably win us games. Thus MM is very happy at this stage of the year. With the sub rule I cannot see any side playing the kind of football required to beat us for sustained periods.

Look at the end results even the Essendon game was 30 points when the rest of the competition are ending in close contests.

My guess is opposition start with this game plan but cannot match us fresh and regroup at half time and try again when we are already in player management mode.

Anyway, that's my opinion and I could be totally wrong.

MM's version of the 'rope a dope'. Let them go the hack, thinking they have us on the back foot and when they tire themselves out, come out and crush their dreams!:D

LOL...very funny...I can see other teams now..how do we avoid the "rope a dope" tactic?

Or

Oh no, Swans starting on the bench - It's the "rope a dope"

I guess what MM is saying is later in the season we will drop the "rope a dope" and play four solid quarters...oh oh.

It's an interesting statistic but from my memory the 3rd qtrs we seem to try out different tactics and rest players/play guys in different positions, then in the final qtr we go back to our normal structures. I could be wrong but I'm not worried about it.

Scary to think we're 5-0 playing nowhere near the level we played in last years finals, and we still have key players down on form.

3rd quarters are a worry though. Hopefully it's an intentional tactic to save run in the legs for the last quarter.

If Geelong has the capacity to kick 6 goals in 12 minutes from the beginning of the 3rd against Hawthorn, and we're playing them in 3 weeks following a bye, I am also somewhat concerned about this - whatever the reason may be.
