Not the real stuff............the preseason comp (or as it was in those days, the night comp)

Anybody of our older posters remember it?

Some background. It was 1979. Hawthorn was fresh of a day premiership in 78 (just their fourth in history) after beating North Melbourne. They had also won the flag in 76 and were obviously on the verge of becoming a superpower with an era of dominance unmatched in modern history.

Collingwood was also on the verge of what could have been a golden era. Hawthorn and Collingwood were becoming quite strong rivals, especially in the ruck where the tough uncompromising Don Scott ruled the roost with an iron fist and sharp elbows, whilst an athletic blonde superstar in the making called Peter Moore had moved from full forward into the ruck to become the prototype for the modern footballer.

So the 1979 season comes around. Both Collingwood and Hawthorn have very slow starts to the season. Peter Moore is dominating the skies and is single handedly keeping us in the finals race. Reigning premiers Hawthorn on the other hand look like they are fighting a losing battle.

Come Round 13, Collingwood is in the five, a game clear of Hawthorn. Hawthorn need to win otherwise they will be two games out of the finals race. Collingwood absolutely belts them by 105 points to jump two games clear plus a massive percentage boost. Peter Moore dominated in the ruck and around the ground. The season is all but over for the Hawks.

The following Tuesday night the same two teams line up again, this time in the Grand Final of the night series championship (Escort Cup I asssume it was called then).

First bounce, the ball goes straight up , Peter Moore has his eyes on the ball ready to continue on from the form of the previous Saturday, but Don Scott has other ideas. His fist landed straight into the face of Moore who went down like a sack of spuds. He figured, if you cant beat them, punch them in the face!

Thats all I remember about that game. The first bounce. We went on to win by 28 points, our first flag of any type since 1958.

Don Scott was suspended for four weeks. A very long sentence in those days. Peter Moore wasnt injured and was fit to play the following week, and ended up winning the Brownlow meal in 1979.

After that we lost in 1980 to North when Kerry GGood kicked a goal after the siren, then we lost to the Crows in 2003, and then we lost to Geelong in 2009.

Interestingly in every year we have made the preseason GF, we have made it to the PF once and the GF three times in the season proper.

I'm with you Timmy - my clearest memory of the game is the Don Scott punch at the opening bounce - and the fact I was allowed to stay up late on a school night to watch it all.

Unfortunately it was the year before I was born.

It's why I want us to win tonight. I'd like to see a night premiership. I know they 'don't matter' but it would still be nice.

All the AFL has to do is up the prize money and people will care. No reason the AFL couldn't have made more effort to make the NAB Cup our version of the FA Cup.

Nice thread Timmy. Brings back memories albeit hazey ones. I seem to recall these things being a lot more important back then but that may just have been my youth. The controversy and outrage when we were robbed in 1980 was massive. I still remember the T-Shirts.
