It's all about opportunity mate, Naughton right place at the right time. The three guys played 21, 20 , 18 games as first years yes
Gowers was a mature ager, but he did nothing at Carlton of note. As a club it's hard to contend with that many first years in an
age demographic sense, but it could be of benefit down the track. If you have ever been to training the first years generally
sit out a lot of the drills and are carefully managed or loaded.
Of course it’s about opportunity. Sport often is. Opportunity created about half a dozen premiership players in 2016. But once it’s taken, you have to acknowledge the performance that follows. Fletcher Roberts, Joel Hamling and Zaine Cordy didn’t finish top 4 in the B&F. Naughton did. In his first year. Yes there were a lot of great players in 16 performing at a much higher level than out of form 2018 players and rookies and Naughton took his opportunity in a bad year to play well but the fact is he still played well in those 18 games. Ed and Billy were wildly inconsistent with flashes of brilliance to encourage us but were invisible at other times. But Naughton was solid all year and worthy of his place every week. No gift games like Lewis Young in 17. He’s separated from the other two as the one that didn’t need opportunity. He just belonged.
