Our pace and then by extension our pressure game looked off against carlton
last night it was definitely off again.

to me it feels like we have pretty good endurance and some of the guys look noticably stronger, georgy for one

but our top end speed is down IMO,so this affects our
closing speed
ability to get numbers to every contest
break lines
make space
provide options

is it too early in season to tell or is it time to start addressing things?

It's cliche but we need to adapt to being the hunted, as much as dimma and co deny that and protest that we will remain the hunter ... the opposition don't see it that way and are much more equipped to deal with our weapons. Opposition now have better laid plans for our pressure and obviously re jigged their own game plan to counter act ours.

I'm reserving judgement on where we're at til round 6. The season still needs to settle and level out. I think it's our hunger for the contest not so much the speed that's the issue, speed comes when we get our tails and confidence up. We need prestia and broad back in immediately and Conca and Cellis need to go.

Pressure rating against the Blues was up there compared to last year. First qtr ordinary 197, excellent 2nd qtr 230, dropped in the 3rd 208 and 224 in the last. Average of 217 for the first up game was good. The blues averaged a pissy 188 for the game

Will be interesting to see the figures from last night

We have tinkered the style a bit and Dimma said as much last night pre game.
More attacking and the balance is just a bit off at the moment. Must say I don’t enjoy high scoring games as a supporter but we will find a nice mix eventually.

switch back to old plan and it's an easy 2peat

Rioli has amazing closing speed and defensive intensity with Bolton having the speed more more offensive and is still developing a devinsive play style

Noticed butter and Georgie playing up the ground a little more witch is great for them as players but has changed the way the forward line functions

Will take a few round to work out the tweeks but I think the boys will adapt

I’m inclined to think it’s more around the oppo selecting a better suited side and structuring up that I see off setting our pressure to a degree. Our high tackle count tells me we re trying. Too many Passengers aren t helping is another factor Cannot carry 5 players v a good side , everyone needs to contribute
Get our own structures working better and the midfield firing will make a major difference

Midfield are getting their pants pulled down barring Dusty. Three defenders missing so our BL is under the pump bc midfield has been beaten. The flow on affect is Small Forwards have been taken out of the game more , so they need to get on their bikes and play upfield more. They’ve been asked to cover more ground and this becomes unsustainable in the long run. Too many smaller passéngers also.

True but if we tinker to much and all
Of a sudden we are 2 wins 4 losses makes things tough .
Yeah. Reckon a game like this one was a bit of a free swing though in a way. The odds of us beating them over there are short at the best of times let alone with them so worked up.

Asked myself the same thing a couple times through the game "Why do we look so slow??"

My dog couldn't answer so not sure why i asked more than once...

That neglects that the oppo are taking us more seriously , last year I can’t think of one single side that would have selected a diff line up to take us on such was their blind fool arrogance , ,, not this year

This and the Crow's ability to control the pace of the game. We might have stunted their switch but the short kicking to targets prevented us from ever really getting our pressure game going. I expect more teams - at least those with good kicking skills - to do the same.

Noticed this with Carlton as well, switched the ball using their better kickers like Simpson. We are missing not only Rioli's speed but his skill, he is like Edwards they make things happen when they get the ball. It has been noted by the players that they all have to buy into this aggressive relentless approach or it breaks down. This has been happening up to a point.

We need to find another tall forward because we are bombing it in, and Riewoldt's game is suffering by having to do too much. I imagine Chol in the ruck would let Nankervis forward who I think could do some damage, if not on the scoreboard at least on the the packs, or the defenders backs, because he is an old fashioned make them earn it type. He is also a good mark. Chol goes in hard once the ball hits the ground so in some ways is a bit like Nankervis in the ruck.

Add some serious pace with Menadue, perhaps Markov. Also it is very early in the year fitness wise. No amount of training gets you match fit, so it might take a awhile before everything fits into place. Considering half the side played as poor as I've seen us for ages, we were only a goal behind 10 minutes into the last.

When our midfield is on I believe that style unravels , blooze last year, ess, and haw played that way . Midfield dominance is key or whatever style comes to a sticky end

Our midfield was bloody terrible , they will be very tempted to bring back miles and Prestia
-48 in contested possessions is where the game was lost. Would be interested to see pressure ratings, but tackles were up so it was probably pretty high. It's all well and good to force skill errors like that, but it's going to probably fall to a contest after that and if you aren't winning it there, it's all for nothing.
Despite our poor contested work overall, we only lost clearances by 1. But we lost inside 50s by 15 because when the ball was there to be won, we got smashed.
It's probably caused by a combination of two things
Lack of desire: the crows obviously wanted to win pretty bad, for us it was just another game. Players need to be reminded that we still need to put in for wins
Poor set up: I'd say this has a lot to do with it. We've obviously tinkered with a few things (and that's a good thing), but it hasn't quite worked. I'll leave it to the coaches, but we've got 6mths to work that out.

Cotch's 1st qtr against carlton was superb. The next 7 is very much CEllis like.
Prestia is the key.Get him back and it releases Cotch.

remember most sides are a month ahead of us in fitness stakes since we won the granny. crows in the same situation but i felt that was more shit skills then fitness
