It has occured to me this morning after seeing the highlights of the power game that whenever we are involved in a brawl we seem to lose the plot and get flogged.eg. port 2010. ess '09 ess 04? your thoughts?

we were 11 points up with 10 minutes to go, i dont think that was the reason, we were off from the start when Port kicked the 1st 3 goals you could see this was not going to be good...

High marking and basic skill errors had more to do with yesterdays loss than fighting.
We had the chance to put the game beyond their reach a few times yesterday and stuffed up right in front of goals

Personally, I don't think the fights have any bearing on the outcome of the games.

2004 - We were poor all year, and we never going to beat Essendon that day. The fight was more about the players standing up for themselves, and in that aspect it was a win.

2009 - Hawthorn's pattern of play all year was to drop off in the second half. Essendon was the opposite, they would be slow starters and win more second halves. And that's how the game panned out.

An aging Lloyd just wanted to get into the game in some way, and by then he was incapable of doing that by playing good football.

2010 - Players were off their game all day, looked flat and sloppy skills, before and after the skirmish.

When I was thinking about the game last night, I realised Port had kicked 2 goals before we even touched the ball. From the moment we touched the ball, we actually won the game, despite playing terribly.

As above, also in each of those brawls there has been a simmering discontent with the lack of protection the umpires have provided.

In the LITS game, it got to the point where I said at half-time we should refuse to go back out unless we got a fair call. As it turned out, not only did the umpires let us down, but the media had us hung-drawn and quartered despite their being two teams involved. Indeed the aggressor in that game got away almost scot free - a disgrace to the AFL/tribunal/umpires and media IMO.

Again, this incident was instigated by port players, yet I can almost guarantee that there focus of media (and mondays MRP) will be on Hawthorn.

Provocation & retaliation has been part of games for a very, very long time. You've had your wins, we've had ours, Port had theirs. A good bit of niggle puts your opponent off & has them going for the man, not the ball. The good protagonists use it to effect, & I'd suggest plenty of your current lot are expert at it.
Maybe Cyril just got sucked in?
Don't get into rank hypocrisy.

I agree with the OP. When have the Hawks actually done something after a brawl?

The fights might not be the actual reason that the Hawks lose but getting involved is a sure sign that they are not on the job. Against Port the Hawks simply were not "on" and maybe this eventually expressed itself in a fight??

Spot on Dork. Our in ability to put teams away is very very concerning. We had Port there for the taking, but we seem to let teams get back into the game and make it hard for ourselves.

I was disapointed but we are very lucky that Carlton and Sydney lost as well. But I do not have any confidence this week as we take on Syd at the SCG of all bloody places. If we cannot beat Port, then our chances against the swans are very slim, especially at the scg.

So we shot ourselves in the foot on sat, now making the 8 is going to be a struggle.
