Ok, we need something a little more light hearted after all the discussions after the Essendon game. So here is something that involves peoples understanding of football, footballers, having insight and something to do to pass the time.

Going through our list name one or two very good benchmark players that are similar to the Carlton player. You're basically naming a player that this individual should be looking to emulate.

It's irrelevant if you think the player can achieve this or not. Just set the player a benchmark.

Austin - Nathan Bock
Bannister - Andrew McKay, Chris/Brad Scott, Chris Johnson (Brisbane)
Bentick - Ling, Ratten, Sam Mitchell

I heard Cam had a dodgey Vindaloo and left a nasty bench mark last week
Armfield = Bradley????Not sure you have him down
Betts is more L Davis

Some of your benchmarks are outrageous. I mean to benchmark guys who can't get in the seniors against guys who are out and out champions and brownlow medalists?

There was a thread once about our '09 team against our '95 premiership team. Whilst I don't think you can compare these based on the evolution of the game, I had some thoughts.

  • Did our '95 side have someone to play on a forward like eddie betts
  • In a modern day game, with the ball coming in the way it does, how would Silvagni go as a full back?
  • If Fevola was at his best back in '95, that style of game, would Silvagni be able to hold him?
  • Clape was extremely underrated back then, who from our '09 side would play on him?

He made it pretty clear he doesn't expect these players to become as good as their comparisons, simply that they should seek to emulate their benchmarks.

David Ellard - Leigh Matthews - similar in that they are small mids/forward pocket types
Brad Fisher - John Coleman - similar in that they have a leaner frame and good hands
Sam Jacobs - Polly Farmer - similar in that they are tall

oh well, best to read things properly isn't it? Basically the thread is about who the should be looking up to and trying to emulate. pretty simple.

ODN, thank you!

I have just been trawling through all the other threads and this sir has really made me laugh!!! :thumbsu:

I think all of our players should try to emulate the very best of the best in the history of our game. I don't think most of them can do it but they should at least try.

Nah look, the key is to be the best Bryce Gibbs you can be, the best Andrew Carrazzo you can be etc etc. Are we considering based on player type that if a player does not reach this benchmark, that they have underachieved or failed? What if they become a different type of player?

Someone like Stevens or Scotland for example, are never going to get any better than they are now. We could say that we want one of our youngsters to reach the benchmark of Stevens or Scotland while asking Stevens or Scotland to reach higher benchmarks.

See a benchmark can be a striving point but it is also a pass mark. There is no way I will consider Judd did not pass if he can not emulate his West Coast years or match Ablett from here on in. Same with Fev. Plenty of players in the AFL would be chuffed to reach the Fev benchmark.

Or at the very least just be remanded in custody! :D

^^

So if we are to judge Fev against Lockett's career, we will consider he underachieved. I'm not sure that all of our players have to reach such lofty standards to be considered to have achieved.

And to say that Grigg should aspire to be, eventually, as good as Robert Harvey... Oh my.

^^^

I have no issue with aspiration, especially for younger players. It is probably a good thing.

I wouldn't want a good career to be measured against a great career however and for that player to be thought to have underachieved.

I just think it's a good thing for players to aspire and have the desire to be like these champions. It drives players and it sets the tone of how they should play the game.
Players should always be aiming for the top, they should be always asking them selves "Why can't I be like ****", "what is stopping me from being like ****", "what do I need to be able to do or improve to be as good as ****".
Grigg should be asking himself these questions in reguard to being like Harvey or Dal Santo. What ever drives a player to succeed or recognise and improve on areas they need to is very helpful.

A role model would be a more appropriate exercise for young players, usually within your own club. Most of our young guys would look at Judd and his preparation and consider that level of training and intensity to be a benchmark. None of them should look at Judd and ask themselves why they can't be like him though, as long as they can match his application, they have done everything asked of them.

Yeah role model is a fair enough term. Benchmark is a strong term and if players see another as a benchmark then perhaps they will work harder at their game.

For example it might appear that Nick Stevens feels he is satisfied with the level he's at at the moment. You could say if he desired to be like Robert Harvey then perhaps he could be a better player and get more out of himself. It's a motivational technique as much as any thing. It's a way of giving a player the drive to succeed.

Gee Batman, I heard you the first time. [Edit: was responding to the post almost the same as the last one ;)]

Grigg should aspire to be the best Shaun Grigg, not the next Dal Santo. Is he going too ring Dal Santo and ask him about diet, wait outside his house and see what training he does in his own time?

I just don't see the point in a player picking another player to become and feeling like they have failed if they don't get there. I guarantee Grigg will end up with some qualities that Dal Santo doesn't have and fall down on others.

Players should identify where they are at and strive to step up further, into the next bracket of performers but I am not sure they need to identify a particular player to emulate.

Dal Santo has copped a lot of flack over the past year for inconsistent performances, for one way running, for a great deal of things, despite still being a good footballer. Players should identify their own deficiencies although coaches should be doing that for them, watch a good cross section of players to understand what is expected of them and make changes to achieve that. They shouldn't be pigeon holing themselves as a certain type of player who has to emulate that same type of player.

Not quite understanding what I have layed out here. Aspiring to play like someone is just that. It's not complicated. It is an example of the level players should try and reach. Players should see some things done by the champions and try and emulate what they see. If it's a line of running, marking technique, spoiling technique, were to run to, how to tackle, how much distance to cover, how fit they need to be, how to stop an opponent etc. It's a motivational thing to aim to be like the best, it's a way players can be driven/motivated to improve and it's educational. It's not about a player thinking if i can't be as good as **** then I have failed.

Any way the OP is more of a question asking supporters who they think they would like and can see our blokes being like. It's about identifying players they are slightly similar to our players and identifying champion players that our blokes could identify as a good role model/benchmark for them to model their game and style of play on.
