First of all I am going to try my hardest to make is as emotionless as possible. However no promises.
My first view of the team is that we are two things;
LAZY
We have become a very lazy team. We do not work to create an opportunity nor do we help others. Today the ball movement in the first quarter was glacial. There is no run and carry nor is there any quick movement of the ball. Watching games from 2012 and 2013 we used to be so great at this brilliant rebound football. Now we are stagnant.
Arrogance
Now this is mixed in with the laziness to some degree. Today and especially in the Suns game it would be 1 Richmond player to go in and hunt the contested ball and the rest of the players would run forward assuming that we were automatically going to win it. If we are to improve they need to drill into the players the Haffey rule of more Richmond jumpers in every photograph of the game.
We also have players who assume that their position is safe. This is unfortunately a symptom of Hardwick not having the balls to cut players who are shit. With no competition of spots players will become complacent and not work to the best of their ability to win the game.
Game Plan
It has to change. Players need to be told to get and go. This was our greatest strength in the past 2 season and it will need to continue if we are to improve. The run and carry has been lost and now it looks like Wallace's game plan is back. One way to beat the rolling maul is to get to the outside quickly then run it up the corridor.
Now for a quick individual review of our players. This is my Opinion and not fact;
1. Chris Newman
Only has 1 position if we are going to play him. Needs to be off Half Back or not playing. Just simply has no forward presence or pressure.
2. Dylan Grimes
Needs to find the steady hand and cool head form he had in 2012. Was cool and made good decisions under pressure. Is still courageous in patches.
3. Brett Deledio
Really missed his ability to break the game open. When he comes back has to be off the half back with small patches in the center. Unfortunately still needs to learn to break a tag.
4. Dustin Martin
Has to improve to justify his want for more money. He has had no real impact in a lot of the season against quality opposition. Needs to be placed in one position and not shuffled around the ground. However if he still has not gained a tank by the time his contract is up for renewal then should trade.
5. Brandon Ellis
Deledio 2.0, just gets tagged out of it too much. Has to improve his work rate to provide useful outside run. Needs to back himself to break lines
6. Shaun Grigg
A weak footballer who only gets cheap possessions. Hardly impacts games like he did in 2012. Has lost work rate and does not like it hard. This year it could easily be said that the only reason he is getting so many uncontested football is because he refuses to stand next to an opponent.
7. Matt Dea
Not much can be said. A backman with no poise or class. Should be his final year unless he can pull something special out.
8. Jack Riewoldt
Does do the team thing. Too much for my opinion. There should be a rule for Jack (and the whole side for that matter) that if you are within the 50 arc then you have a license to take a shot. Need to have a better crumber at his feet for assistance.
9. Trent Cotchin (C)
No longer a superstar of the competition. Just a decent above-average player who rarely impacts the game nor makes a mark on them anymore. His kicking has gone backwards by a mile as has his decision making in general. I don't know if the captaincy is too much for him but I really think he should consider doing the team thing and giving that aside soon.
10. Shane Edwards
Has moments but is not someone who should be in the centre for the bounce. Can do good things but then can do something shocking. Looks dangerous when he has the support of defensive forwards doing their job.
11. Jake Bachelor
Needs to step up and show something. Has had moments where he looked good. His kicking was once a feature of his game but that seems to have fallen to the wayside. Needs to make a mark as at the age of 22 his head is on the chopping block.
12. David Astbury
Has had a horrible run of injury. Looks to be regaining some of the 2010 form that he had. The bulking up as well has aided him. Playing a good season so far and has more than earned his spot forcing someone else out.
13. Ricky Pettard
Divides a lot of supporters. He can be good and he can be terrible. However one can not argue that he tries his heart out each week. His endevour is what is needed from all players however his skills are lacking.
14 Bachar Houli
I don't know if it is the new game plan or what but has lost a lot of confidence in breaking the game open. Doesn't like the hard stuff but is good when he breaks lines down the centre corridor and delivers with a lethal left foot.
15. Chris Knights
When fit has to come back. Is a good player that can get to the dangerous spots and can kick a good goal. The knee injury has set him back a small amount but is an important player going forward.
16. Shaun Hampson
Great in the ruck, shit when it hits the ground. Unfortunately his around the ground work rate is pathetic and his lack of skills is now known to the players. Cotchin, Jack and Arnott have all burnt him about it. When Maric comes back in, Hampson will find himself on the outer
18. Alex Rance.
A vital player. Courage is his middle name. He likes to take risks and will happily put his body on the line. Furthermore with the way he plays he almost forces other players to take the game on. Is a necessary player that can not comeback from injury sooner
19. Matt Thomas
Like Pettard, divides opinion. I personally like him. If we had more numbers around contests and had players better positioned then his work would be more appreciated. He is however glacially slow which is a negative as our side has been exposed for pace.
20. Ivan Maric
A warrior in every sense of the word. Works hard in everything he does and does not take a backwards step. Throws his weight around the contest and provides good blocks for other players. A leader of the club that is needed in the side however injury may limit his use.
22. Todd Banfield
Looks to be a w***er in every sense of the word. Would be like our teams Milne however that would be a detriment. Has pace but lacks heart and desire. Needs a miracle to come off the rookie list.
23. Dan Jackson
Should be the captain in my oppinion. A very smart and eloquent man that is a foot soldier. Has above average skills but he works hard. Needs to recapture last years form however.
24. Ben Griffiths
Wins the best improved player for the year. Has a cannon and good hands. Is a good forward that works well. He uses his body to block for Jack or at least tries to stop a double team. Just needs to find more of the ball
25. Troy Chaplin
Needs to be given a specific job. Has good football brains for a player in the backline but needs a specific job other than mind this empty space and be a loose player. Will greatly benefit from the return of Rance
26. Anthony Miles
Would have preferred him to be the upgraded rookie. Has a lot of the Matt Thomas qualities but adds to it with better pace and more clearance work. Should be upgraded end of this year or if we get an LTI.
27. Arron Edwards.
Started his career of well at Richmond. I believe he would be a better third target up forward. Has a nice boot so can be dangerous with his inside 50's. Also has the potential to break games open with a bag.
28. Jake King.
Adds defensive pressure but is starting to get old. A good position player that can get 1-3 goals a game and shut down offensive backman. Needs to hit form again to break into the side.
29. Tyrone Vickery
Is what I hate at the moment. He embodies a weak privileged footballer. Doesn't chase nor apply pressure. Likes a fight but only when it is with the man on the mark or someone not looking and will not fly back with the pack. Is forever in Jacks shadow allowing for his man to double team Jack. Needs to dominate this year or we should look to trade and get a higher draft pick.
30. Reece Conca
Unsung hero of the club. Looks to be slowly getting back into form. Is rated by the club as a very important midfielder for the club. Hopefully his confidence can improve.
31. Nick Vlastuin
A good leader and a courageous player with good skills. Being wasted and ruined by being in the backline all the time. Should be given more midfield time to allow his skill and hardness at the ball be used.
32. Brad Helbig
Stupid footballer with a stupid tattoo. Nothing to like here. Should be trader or delisted.
33. Kamdyn McIntosh
20 and still yet to debut. Looked shakey in the nab challenge and has yet to dominate at a VFL level. Will look to persist for the next year or so or should delist
34. Liam McBean
A tall athletic forward. Needs muscle badly but has shown that he can dominate at the VFL level. Close to a debut last year but injury cut him down. Hopefully after another preseason at the end of this year he can make a debut
35. Ben Lennon
A silky half forward flanker. First round draft pick who needs time to develop a small amount. However I do believe he is playing off half back in the VFL so he could be ruined by the time he comes to the firsts.
36. Matt McDonough
People think he is the lord and savior of the club. I look at him and think that I have not seen him impose on a real game for points. In my opinion could be another Addam Maric, good in the NAB terrible in the H&A. Seems to be a good half backer and looks lost in the forward line.
37. Orren Stephenson.
He tries hard but does not have the skill or the youth to be worth persisting with past this season.
38. Steven Morris
May have taken a slightly backwards step this year. Was the premier small backman last year that shut the best small forwards out. Needs to go back to that to really improve the side. Love his effort and desire for the club to succeed. Others could learn from his example. Genuinely looks to be in love with the club and loves to put the jumper on.
39. Nathan Gordon
An odd type of player. He runs hard and works equally as hard. Has played his best games as a sub. He is the perfect sub in many cases as well. Runs all day and makes good leads at the football.
40. Cadeyn Williams
Have not seen too much of him to be honest. Still young however.
41. Nathan Foley
Needs to either get back to his line breaking form or will be delisted at the end of the year. Simple.
42. Sam Lloyd.
A player worth persisting with. Has good attack at the ball and knows where the goals are. Should be given a license to go for them when inside the arc.
43. Todd Elton
Looks to have put some muscle on this season. Is a nice size as well. Should be given a chance at some point given the season will be over come next week.
44. Matt Arnot
Works hard and is a little cannon. Needs to change his attack to the ball not the man. Like him in the side though. Should get a lot better with experience.
45. Brett O'Hanlon.
Needs to show something. Is an ok size but needs to really impose himself. Could be overtaken by others around him in the next few years
48. Ben Dorrou
Can not seem to take a trick. For the past season and some of this one we have consistently heard how well he is doing. Would like to see him on the big stage for an extended run.
