Todd Grima

Details:
Club: Northern Bombers/Tassie Mariners/Tassie Devils VFL List
DOB: 5 February 1987 Hgt: 193cm Wgt: 88kg
Position: Forward
Natural Foot: Right

Honours:
All Australian U18 – bench
2005 AFL Draft Camp

Stats:
2005 AFL U18 Championships: 3 games, 14 goals, averaged 10.6 PPG and 5 MPG

Background:
Tall forward who was looked at by a few clubs last year, but eventually missed being selected. He hit the headlines after kicking 10 goals straight against the Northern Territory in the first match of this years U18 championships. It was not the first time he had kicked a bag of goals this season – he kicked seven against the Bendigo Pioneers and the Geelong Falcons in Tasmania’s Invitational TAC Cup matches. Spent a week at the Hawks after the championships, before returning to Tasmania and making his VFL debut with the Tasmanian Devils where he played three matches. Is the brother of Australian basketballer Hollie, while he also has an older brother Nathan who plays for the Devils in the VFL and is also attending state screening this year.

Strengths:
- Mobile, quick lead
- Good kick
- Strong Mark

Weaknesses:
- Division 2 player?

Footydraft.com comment: Had an impressive season with three bags of goals in high standard U18 matches, plus elevation to playing VFL for the Devils. Was apparently a bit of interest in him last year, he’s done well enough this year to be in the mix as high as a late first round draft pick.

Looking at our list we were lacking small defenders who could man up, hence Will Slade. With Egan looking like a regular in the seniors, Spencer is our only genuine tall defender in the VFL side, hence Sam Hunt. Lacking quality tall forwards it was good to see them take a punt on Todd Grima who we were apparently looking at drafting in the National Draft.

Overall I think they have drafted to cover areas that we were difficient in, so well done.

P.s. Hunt will be a handy pick up for the VFL team, as he has always performed well for Bendigo. Drafting him will allow Lonergan to spend full games at centre half forward and not have to go back to cover. With a good run with injuries I think the VFL side will be a force next year.

I am very happy that Will has got another go. He is my mostest favorite player. I think he will be ace for us again. I have put on my Will jumper and badge. Yeah, go Will. Do you think they will put him on the main part of players soon? Does anyone no where he lives, I want to send him a letter congratulating him?

C'MON THE MIGHTY CATS GET IT ON IN 2006.

Ace for us again, not sure when he has been ace for us before, i might have blinked and missed it. He has been injured pretty much for 2 seasons.

As for his address, well i dont know. looks like we could have a stalker here. LOL

Not to disparage our picks but im disapointed we didnt take another ruck. Wall for instance was there for our first two picks.
I watched the game where Grimma kicked 10 against NT. Any kid who can kick double figure goals has talent but im not sure if he is much different to Mackie. Same sort of frame.

The other two have been there, seen action and probably known quanites compared to others in the draft. Slade pick shows loyalty and Hunt brings home an old Falcon

picking up slade and going for hunt just shows there wasn't any real depth in this draft. grima is a good pick up for the future, as guys like playfair, mccarthy, mackie, lonergan, and to a lesser extent spencer have to step this year , if not hopefully grima has a good year shows a bit, he will leapfrog most of them for the kpp spots. grimma = insurance for 07/08 season.

I think Grima will be a good get for you blokes (although I've been wrong before :D ). Seemed like a smart chappie when interviewed too. I think his weaknesses have been over-stated and half of it seems to be based on what he didn't have to display against the NT.

Good luck with him. :thumbsu:

From an Essendon viewpoint, it has brought a smile to my face about you guys taking Sam Hunt. It's a good insurance policy for you down there, given Tom Harley's injury worries.

I hope that's a smile 'with us' and not 'at us'. ;)

Dont mind Hunt, always thought he could play. Glad he has got his chance with Geelong. Slade was looking like a regular untill OP hit so i guess that is the justification. Good point already made about needing a small defender.

Grima is a punt but that is what the rookie draft is for.

Satisfactory day.

OK , most seem to like our picks. I think they are fair but its all conjecture really isn't it. The real test is how we have gone will be many of our picks gone on become a part our main group that regularly makes up the best 22.

Adding the three today to the other two Rookies at the club, this on top of a fresh group of five on our list we have added quite a few guys that will desperate to get a crack, to prove themselves. But can they do it?

It would be a tough gig at Geelong to break into such youthfull side that has been moulded into a tough seasoned team. Im sure that has contributed to Thurley and Chambers departing. They left with good offers but they also probably recognised that their chance would be resticted. Its just so tough when your at a club with a young group like ours

Id say the choice of Slade ensures we have an other alternative for the back position that Sanderdon has left open. Looking at his stats he is only 182, he better not have lost any pace with his OP but at least he has a chance. He is a know guys so, less risk.
Likewize Hunt looks to be a Harley backup, who has played AFL. Harley must be bit sus after his injuries in 05.Also , if I was Spencer id find it interesting that another tall backmen has been brought into the mix.
Grimma will have to show some amazing talent id say or he will get lost.Think what NA looked like in the V's.Ordinary.He will be up against players like Lonergan, Mackie and Gardiner. Has anyone got stats on his leap.when I watched him, I cant remember him taking any crackers over the top of the pack, it was more of the same sort of player that we have, very good lead, over head mark and he converted well (maybe thats better than our guys)
If he can kick some big bags, he may anounce himself.Only can hope he goes better than the last few from Tas.

Good luck guys , you have probably 12 months to show something. Its a tough gig footy.

I'm quite happy with the picks. My question mark is over Hunt because I don't know much about why he didn't get a run at Essendon. Obviously Fletcher is one of their first picked and Bradley is up and coming but other than that I would have though they could have used another tall defender. Maybe injuries played a part...

Slade deserved another crack. As many have mentioned he was a real goer before getting injured and could still prove worthwhile. My lasting memory of him is throwing himself on the line and doing the team things. Every team needs that.

Grima sounds like he was well worth the punt. Anyone who can kick 10 straight has some obvious talent and he is the right size to make it at this level. Someone mentioned he was a Mackie type but I disagree. At 88kg he is well on the way where as Mackie is still only 83kg and I can't see him getting much bigger.

Overall, I think the rookie draft is about taking calculated risks on players who play in positions you need to fill and that's what we've done.
