THE RUCK rule changes introduced this season will spark an AFL version of survival of the fittest, while also working in favour of spring-heeled athletes like West Coast's Nic Naitanui, North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein says.

Under the changes announced by the AFL last October, umpires will now throw the ball up at all field stoppages, and ruckmen will not be permitted to make contact with each other at stoppages until the ball has left the umpire's hand.

If this turns out to be the case, Hammer is going to beat both Warnock and Kreuzer hands down.

We will see. Sometimes these things don't turn out how they first think.

When the 3 and 1 rule came in, everyone thought that the sub would be a spare ruckman incase he went dowm..... how wrong everyone was.

I will wait and see how the rucks go at it, with this new rule. I don't think we will really be able to tell until then.

I think our ruck situation is very clear:

#1 ruck: Matthew Kreuzer
Key forward/backup ruckman: Shaun Hampson
Bullants ruck/should have been traded last year: Robert Warnock.

Warnock is a nice insurance policy if one of the first two go down hurt, as he should be rucking in the AFL somewhere. Just not at Carlton ahead of Kreuzer.

completely agree

Playing Hampson & Kruezer just has far to many benefits. It allows kruezer to play his best position in the ruck whereas with warnock playing he would have to spend alot of time out of the ruck as warnock cant play forward. Hampson and Kruezer are athletic beasts and have shown in the past they work very well together. Hampson and Kruezer look far more dangerous than Warnock and Kruezer

Has anyone got the stats for goals from hitouts to advantage?

Hitouts are overrated, especially now with teams setting up to intercept the ball after a clearance, get extra numbers to the stoppage etc.

The best trait a ruck can have is being dominant around the ground and Kreuzer is by far the best at this, playing as another grunt working midfielder.

Until we get a couple of forwards who are better key position players than Casboult, Hampson should be third tall forward/second ruck. If Mitchell and one other become best 22 players then Levi could do that role.

Agree with this, the next best trait a ruck can have is being able to play a full season and the last time of our 3 ruckman played a full season was Kruezer's first year.

Stats confidential: Shaun Hampson a revelation for Carlton
In three games this season, he has cleanly won the hitout 52 per cent of the time.

That strike rate has Hampson behind only Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle) and Patrick Ryder (Essendon). When he wins the hitout, 26 per cent go to advantage - again above the AFL average.

He is ticking the box in the forward 50 arc too, providing a reliable target. The Blues have used him 15 times in three games as the forward go-to man, behind only Jarrad Waite and ahead of Eddie Betts.

They score 46.7 per cent of the time they go to Hampson, No.1 at Carlton and significantly higher than the AFL average.

Still want Hammer to take more uncontested marks and get to more contests (i.e. improve his reading of the play) after the other article stated he was fifth for contested marks.

undoubtedly the HAMPSTER'S best run of games came playing forward at the start of last year. the reason we smashed collingwood in the rucks early last year was more about Kreuzer monstering Jolly. When you are a ruck forward playing 70-80% forward, the forward part of you role is pretty important. The Hammer still has a lot to prove here, his form quickly tailed off when waite went down early last year...

I see Ive got a year of Hammer doubting to fight again. Some of Hampsons ruckwork especially forward was sublime. His ruckwork, spin and goal in the dying minutes was a thing of beauty. It was thought that a goal a game last year would be a good get and he was ahead of that when he was injured in the second Collingwood game. By round 3, several media outlets had him as the leagues most improved player. Not good enough for Carlton fans though apparently.
