Looking at the youth that comprises the majority of our list at the moment, how exciting is it that we should have continued success over the current decade?

Forwards: Cloke, Dawes, Blair, Fasolo, Macaffer

Mids: Pendles, Thomas, Wellingham, Sidebottom, Beams

Backs: Reid, Brown, O'Brien, Toovey, Shaw, Goldsack

Witts, Keefe in a Leigh Brown type role?

That as a core is quite impressive. What rookies/other senior players around now do you see being in our best 22 in 4 years time? Will players like Buckley and McCarthy be good long term prospects or are they just short depth personnel?
Sorry if this thread is a bit random as it is a long time away, but I find it a fairly enjoyable topic to discuss :D

Why not have swan in the team? he'll be 31 by then and still would be a good player.

I'm with you on that! For 2 reasons a) his genetics, his old man played until his mid 30's and played over 350 games in the VFA/ VFL and b) he's the most durable player we've had at the club in my lifetime. The bloke's played 149 of the past 153 matches since he cemented his spot in the team in early 2005.

Put simply I'd be rather surprised if he isn't running around until at least 2018.

Also think he can play fairly awesome as a medium forward too

Top point. He's one of the best marks in the league overhead for his size and when you couple that with his ability at ground level he could become a rather dulled down version of Lethal Leigh.

Note: In no way shape or form am I comparing the two players! It's more that once Swan get's into the twilight of his career he may be able to play a similar role to the one Matthews did in his latter years (obviously without quite the same success).

Seedsman has improved a lot in such a small time so by 2015 you'd think he's be there abouts if he's going to make it. Josh Thomas is another that you could expect to be in the 22 if injury free in the next few years.. Hine's recruiting has been really good so you'd expect some guys taken in the next few drafts would be in the mix as well.

it could also look like this in 2015

Harry o to west coast
Reid to gws
beams 2014 traded for being a twat and getting face tats for pick 20
Lecras a pie
Gibbo Jones (NEW PLAYER DRAFTED PICK 5 2013)
Robbo Slongdick (pick 3 2014 nab draft)

b vince.. free agent over 28s..

the point is who knows how a team for look in 4-5 years time.. look at our team in 2005 and see how much they change.

Yep, one thing is for certain our hierarchy will still have an obsession with genitalia related names even in 2015.

so much changes in footy, will be interesting to revisit this post then

Yes it would and good example in 2005 or 2006 would you said we would have Both Luke Ball and Darren Jolly at Collingwood?

Can only calculate those based on who we have.
+
The players we can acquire over coming years who we likely will pick up include:
Jarrod Witts (NSW/ACT - Will get)
Michael Hartley (NSW/ACT - Will get)
Caolan Mooney (Ire - Will get)
James Stewart (F/S - Scotch College - 2012)
Elijah Edwards (NSW/ACT - Scotch College - later)
Darcy Moore (F/S - Carey Grammar - later)

And then those born in '83 and before will likely all have retired. So calculations can be made from there.

But will obviously be getting heaps of others drafted + we won't know who is traded in/out also. So what now is our core group likely will be drastically different by 2015 as others have mentioned.

A for fun attempt at a best 22 based on adding these + getting rid of the over 28s =
F: Dane Swan Chris Dawes Elijah Edwards
HF: Dayne Beams Travis Cloke Alex Fasolo
CEN: Steele Sidebottom Luke Ball Jye Bolton
HB: Tom Young Ben Reid Harry O'Brien
B: Heath Shaw Michael Hartley Alan Toovey
FOLL: Jarrod Witts Dale Thomas Scott Pendlebury
BENCH: Lachlan Keeffe James Stewart Darcy Moore Sharrod Wellingham

Quite a few players actually do this to some success. Brad Johnson is another, I guess players like Goodwin playing as a defender etc. The one thing about Swan is he has pace, so even if he loses a bit he shouldn't be sluggish.

No spot for Brown ? ( of the Nathan variety )

Intentional move on my part.

Struggled with knee injuries all year. Wouldn't be surprised if he continues to struggle with injuries in later seasons.

In the scenario this happens - chance - I wouldn't be surprised to see him go into some type of coaching position. Likely a player development position to help key backman.

But if he gets his body right then absolutely no reason why he won't be in our 2015 squad, unless Keeffe/Hartley go past him which is the other possibility.

Not sure what you're talking about? Generally ACL victims do struggle with their injury for a year.

He tore his ACL, like many players do. He was about to return within 6 months of a traditional reco which is almost unheard of (kudos to his ability to recover so quickly and the exceptional determination of the man himself), then suffers an injury on his opposite knee due to a freak accident.

Bit rich to say he has 'struggled with knee injuries all year' and use this as a basis to suggest he is injury prone enough that he may have his career ended prematurely.

You are right.

And should be back next year.

But do think his career could be cut short with injuries.

Could just as easily included him in my 22. Just an interpretation.

Apart from the toasting of our successful recruiting, the purpose of this thread to get some opinions on which rookies would mostly likely fit into the OP's squad.

Seedsman seems like a safe call, he's looking like an AFL player already. Could definitely see Swan last that long even as a small forward with some time in the mids. I wonder if both Goldsack and Buckley would be around as they seem to have very similar roles, though Buckley might find a niche on the wing with his penetrating kick. Have only seen Witts and Hartley play Knightmare, but its interesting how clubs can get around the draft through things like the NSW scholarship program etc. Not complaining though after seeing Witts :D

First post in many weeks, just got back from holidays and this thread caught my eye.

I like it, although I would swap Beams to the followers and have Thomas on the wing, with Bolton up forward. No way would I expect Beams to continue in his forward role, he is far too good for that. Other than that, looks like a frikkin tasty team. A midfield of Sidebottom, Beams, Wellingham, Daisy, J Thomas, Pendlebury (C), Ball (I'd actually put Blair there), Fasolo and Bolton will still be one of the best I think... But alas, GC will still anihilate anything in their path by that time.

Interestingly this isn't my thread. Just luckily/unluckily I happen to be the first poster on page 2 which makes it look like I am.
But none the less I find it an interesting one to discuss.

I too like Beams most as a follower and I hope he doesn't continue to play just as a forward in later seasons. Has the inside ability and would without a doubt get serious minutes in that midfield rotation if he continues developing strongly.
I think D.Thomas like Gaz Ablett might become a better inside player and might later on play a greater number of inside minutes while dividing with outside minutes where he is most effective.
If Ball is gone then J.Thomas comes in, since he isn't an established player though it is a risk listing him in this side because we can't say for certain whether he will still be around, but I'd certainly like him to be there in 2015 because he can be every bit as good as Ball.

Don't be surprised to see Bolton on the ball in 2015, wouldn't be surprised to see him push past a Wellingham to get into that rotation. But can also play some forward if needed.

Any of: Blair, Macaffer, Goldsack and similar type fringe players I could have included but I decided not to intentionally. No guarantees that they are still around, might be a couple of better talents who surpass them.
Seedsman has shown promise at VFL level and would have to come into consideration for this side also, but hard to fit him into the midfield rotation, bit like J.Thomas. Daniel Farmer is another who I wouldn't be shocked to see make it, but I think he will need a good 3 seasons to hit his stride.

Blair being a shorter type I don't think will have as much development left and I do question whether he will ever be good enough to push past any of our major players into our midfield rotation, even though I do believe he is a better midfielder than a forward. Often the shorter types seem to develop allot earlier, so much of the time it's about evaluating them as they are at that point in time. If they continue to develop like a Brent Harvey and have a super long career - that is just a bonus.

Gold Coast will probably in 2015/2016 surpass us and could well have by this stage, will be scary when they activate all those compo picks in 2012! GWS will be their equal and will be equally dominant, which is equally frightening having those two Geelong type forces in the league at the one time.
